Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we expect, all too often, is exactly what we get. Nowhere is this more true than in education, where teachers' expectations of students are crucial. The self-fulfilling prophecy should be of great interest to teachers, both those in training and those in service. Whether or not a teacher is aware of it, the self-fulfilling prophecy is at work, impacting students either to their benefit or their detriment. It follows that teachers should be made aware of the SFP and how it can be used effectively in education. Using the new on-line research facilities, Dr. Tauber has compiled over 700 doctoral dissertations and countless journal articles on stereotyping, perception of social differences, race, gender, ethnicity, body features, age, socioeconomic levels, special needs, and other personal and situational factors. The last part of the book presents a collection of testimonials written from the viewpoint of practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From foreword: Few psychological variables affecting the lives of children are given as much emphasis by mental health professionals and the general public as self-esteem. Psychoanalyst Harry Stack Sullivan viewed the concept of self as the "bedrock of the human personality," and a deterioration in self-esteem has long been associated by both clinicians and researchers with a wide range of difficulties - from depression and delinquency to eating disorders and school failure. The message has not been lost on parents and teachers, who constantly search for ways to improve the motivation and well-being of their children by helping them enhance their self-concept. As one popular book on the subject tells its readers, self-esteem is no less than the "mainspring that slates every child for success or failure as a human being." Careful observations of the child tend to reinforce the validity of such views-and thus the importance of this unusually rich volume.

Book excerpt: This study explores ways of fostering a positive relationship between academic self-concept and academic achievement among ninth grade English students in a regional, suburban high school. ... This study explored ways of extending these important research findings by replicating aspects of these studies in my ninth-grade class for the full benefit of my students' academic self-concept and academic achievement. A questionnaire was administered in order to determine which English skills students had the most trouble with due to having a low academic achievement. ... Results showed that the specifically designed lesson plans helped increase the academic self-concept of students in the experimental group. This result suggests that academic self-concept can be fostered in classroom teaching using lesson plans that target, among other skills, the development of positive academic self-concept.
