Book Self Identity and Language Learning

Download or read book Self Identity and Language Learning written by Shin-Ying Lin and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia, a country with multiple cultures and ethnics, and also with the largest population of overseas Chinese, used to ban Chinese learning for thirty-two years due to the assimilation policy. Therefore, the present study aims at discovering Chinese Indonesians' self identities and whether the identities will generate their motivation toward multiple language learning. In addition, the current study also explores Chinese Indonesians' perceptions toward multiple language learning and studying in a Taiwanese school in Indonesia. To implement the study, eight participants were investigated: the students, faculty members and parents of a Taiwanese school in Indonesia. The researcher analyzed the data collected from field notes, observations, open-ended questionnaires and in-depth individual interviews. The findings indicated that Chinese-Indonesian participants regarded themselves as Chinese descendants and thus they would retain their Chinese heritage, e.g. Chinese language and culture. This resulted in Chinese Indonesians' high motivation of Chinese learning. Furthermore, under the unique historical and cultural background of Indonesia, Chinese Indonesians have high instrumental motivation to multiple-language learning and studying in a Taiwanese school in Indonesia. Despite the fact that all of the participants agreed with the curriculum of a Taiwanese school, they were expecting some particular subjects with more contents related to Indonesia. Thus, the researcher suggests teachers from Taiwan teaching in Taiwanese schools in Indonesia could incorporate some elements related to Indonesia in their teaching materials or have a comparison between Taiwan and Indonesia, especially in particular subjects like history, geography and citizenship. Along with the implementation of the directions of the twelve-year Basic Education Curricula, the researcher suggests that Taiwanese schools in Indonesia could introduce the directions of the twelve-year Basic Education Curricula to Chinese-Indonesian students and parents, for it can reach better understanding for those who are studying now and will be studying in Taiwanese schools in the future.

Book The Psychological Well being of East Asian Youth

Download or read book The Psychological Well being of East Asian Youth written by Chin-Chun Yi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid social change in the East Asia has brought great research attention on the family, education and political impacts. The growth trajectory of the next generation is exposed to an entirely different context owing to the dual effects of traditional and modern values as well as practices. This book provides an overall picture of the developmental trajectory of Taiwanese youth as a typical example in the region. The time frame is set from early adolescence (13years old) to young adulthood (22yeard old). Individual psychological well-being in its broad definition will be used as the outcome indicator to reflect significant developmental processes during this important transitional life course. Benefitted from the rare panel datasets conducted from 2000-2009, this book has two major focuses: one is to explore the interplay among family, school and community with regard to their influence on the individual growth patterns; the other is to highlight the potential constraint and/or strength of the prevailing social norms and values shared among East Asian societies. To be specific, different chapters will describe and analyze the life chances and growth patterns among youth with different social capitals (including family SES, educational achievement, rural-urban residence, etc.). Their short-term versus long-term outcome, as indicated by various psychological well-being variables (e.g., depressive symptoms, deviant or problem behaviors, happiness, edutional performance), will allow us to delineate the particular structural context that individual East Asian youth encounters and to offer constructive suggestions on family interaction, educational strategy as well as health related policies based on the scientific evidence. This book incorporates comparative reports from other East Asian societies, and from youth panel studies of Australia and the U.S.. The experience of their counter-part in the advanced societies will contribute to readers’ understanding of the particular social situation that East Asian youth is embedded in the growth process. In addition, comparative perspective will enable the reader to contemplate on the potential future development of the affluent generation in the region. Since changing social structure occurred in the last few decades in the East Asia has suffered inadequate investigation in the realm of family, education and community, this book provides timely information to fill up the gap. Analyses of the valuable dataset from early adolescents to young adults will attract those who are interested in family researches, in youth studies, in panel data analyses, as well as in the social development in Taiwan and in East Asia.

Book Perfectionism Coping Adjustment and Achievement in Taiwanese Culture

Download or read book Perfectionism Coping Adjustment and Achievement in Taiwanese Culture written by Reid Trotter and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the relationship among components of adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism, situation-specific collectivist coping, and both psychological and achievement functioning (i.e. depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and grade point average) among a sample of 225 Taiwanese undergraduate students. A series of path analyses indicated that models of perfectionism, coping, and human functioning that have been empirically supported within European American samples were not supported among this Taiwanese sample. However, congruent with the Taiwanese cultural context, avoidance and detachment coping predicted maladaptive perfectionism which in turn predicted impaired psychological functioning. Moreover, path models indicated that standards predicted acceptance, reframing, and striving, which in turn predicted improved psychological functioning. Finally, cultural and clinical implications of this study's findings are discussed.
