Book An Investigation of Pre service Teachers Collegiate Preparation to Teach Character Education in Catholic Elementary School

Download or read book An Investigation of Pre service Teachers Collegiate Preparation to Teach Character Education in Catholic Elementary School written by Louis P. DeAngelo and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of pre-service teachers' collegiate prepration to address character education in Catholic elementary school was conducted using a qualitative design. Three instruments were utilized in gathering data for this study: (a) the Education Chairperson Interview Questionnaire that provided data about the collegiate perspective in pre-service programs preparing teachers to address character education, (b) the Novice Teacher Survey that gathered data about first-year teachers' perceptions of their collegiate preparation program in both secular and Catholic institutions, and (c) the Novice Teacher Interview Questionnaire whereby data was probed to ascertain the needs first-year teachers had regarding character education teaching in Catholic elementary school. Triangulation yielded data about character education in pre-service teacher programs at secular and Catholic colleges and the self-perceived needs of first-year teachers. An interpretation of the interrelationship among the data provided a perspective on research questions. It appeared that secular and Catholic colleges addressed character education interwoven throughout core courses in teacher preparation programs. First-year teachers perceived a greater need for more direct instruction of character education content and pedagogy at the collegiate level and for ongoing support at the local school level in the first teaching year.

This book provides in-depth, personal descriptions of how elementary teachers are prepared in six diverse schools and colleges of education, ranging from the program in a small liberal arts college to those embedded in major research-oriented universities. The richly woven descriptions (gained through intensive observations and interviews) provide a balanced picture of the situation and context of teacher education today. Howey and Zimpher conclude the descriptions with an insightful cross-institutional analysis of the problems and issues uncovered and suggest a provocative set of characteristics that appear to contribute to an effective program of teacher education.

It considers both the general and professional education requirements of prospective teachers, notes related problems and issues, and raises questions or makes suggestions for resolving them. Part II, "Alternative Teacher Education Curricula," provides truncated reviews of 22 newer ideas for the preservice curriculum, most of which have received only brief or minimal attention from teacher education practitioners. Part III, "Instruction in Teacher Education," focuses on teaching method and instructional alternatives. The major alternatives highlighted are microteaching, simulations, Reflective Teaching, and use of protocol materials. Part IV, "Summing Up," synthesizes the many suggestions made throughout the book, and might serve as an agenda for improving preservice curriculum and instruction in teacher education. (JD)

Book The Integration of Character Education and Its Impact on Teacher s Professional Practice

Download or read book The Integration of Character Education and Its Impact on Teacher s Professional Practice written by Katie L. Bahm and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on pre-service teacher training in character education is minimal at best, as is the case with research on best practices in pre-service education in general. What does exist suggests that there is a lack of pre-service training about specific character education strategies. There are few empirical studies investigating the effects of pre-service character education training as it applies to later practice in K-12 school settings. This study explored the perceptions of beginning teachers regarding their past preparation and current implementation of character education. Each participant graduated from a university in a Northwest state that currently implements character education in its pre-service curriculum. The research question was: Does the character education initiative at West University's undergraduate pre-service program have an impact on its teacher education graduates' current classroom practices? From this question four hypotheses were formed: (1) Graduates from West University's pre-service undergraduate program perceive their pre-service character education as being effective for them as character educators; (2) Graduates from West University's pre-service program feel competent to implement character education; (3) Graduates from West University's pre-service program report using effective character education strategies in their current classrooms; and (4) Graduates from West University's pre-service program perceive that they are effectively impacting their students' character, citizenship and critical thinking skills. A mixed-methods design was employed starting with quantitative analysis of a survey that was distributed to teachers in their first five years of teaching after having graduated from the targeted university with a total of 31 respondents. The researcher then interviewed eight survey participants. The study revealed a mixed picture regarding the subjects' sense of preparedness to implement character education. Quantitative data suggested that subjects felt competent to implement character education, as manifested in positive scores on the Character Education Efficacy Belief Instrument, but the qualitative data revealed the opposite. There was also a mixed picture of the use of character education strategies within their classrooms, with subjects reporting usage of some strategies but in a non-directive approach. The subjects also felt that they were affecting their students' character, citizenship, and critical thinking skills but with limitations.

Book Rethinking Field Experiences in Preservice Teacher Preparation

Download or read book Rethinking Field Experiences in Preservice Teacher Preparation written by Etta R. Hollins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is the centrality of clinical experiences in preparing teachers to work with students from diverse cultural, economic, and experiential backgrounds. Organized around three themes—learning teaching through the approximation and representation of practice, learning teaching situated in context, and assessing and improving teacher preparation—Rethinking Field Experiences in Preservice Teacher Preparation provides detailed descriptions of theoretically grounded, research-based practices in programs that prepare preservice teachers to contextualize teaching practices in ways that result in a positive impact on learning for traditionally underserved students. These practices serve current demands for teacher accountability for student learning outcomes and model good practice for engaging teacher educators in meaningful, productive dialogue and analysis geared to developing local programs characterized by coherence, continuity, and consistency.

Book The Challenge of Teaching

Download or read book The Challenge of Teaching written by Gretchen Geng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents thirty-one accounts by final-year pre-service teachers, providing guidance and insights for less advanced teacher education students, and illustrating the use of life history and narrative stories as methods for pre-service teachers to explore educational issues in classroom practice. This life-history approach identifies those political, economic, and social forces that have impinged on the individual at different points in their life and contributed to the process of changing their identities. These stories are not written by established specialists in the areas they deal with, but instead by novice teachers at the beginning of their paths towards mastering the intricacies of teaching and learning in school settings. As such the book provides a mentoring framework and a means of helping pre-service teachers share their valuable experiences and insights into aspects such as how to manage practicum requirements. It helps establish a supportive relationship among pre-service teachers, providing them with access to valuable peer experiences. In addition it helps pre-service teachers make sense of their own practicum experiences and reflect on their own beliefs and professional judgement to develop their approaches and solve problems in their own classroom practice.

Book The Relationship Between Saudi Pre Service Teachers Perceptions of Preparation and Their Teaching Self Efficacy

Download or read book The Relationship Between Saudi Pre Service Teachers Perceptions of Preparation and Their Teaching Self Efficacy written by Abdulrahman Ahmed Alasmari and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the relationship between Saudi pre-service teachers' perceptions of preparation and their teaching self-efficacy. The study is based on Bandura's social cognitive learning theory for self-efficacy to describe human behavior in which personal determinants, environmental influences, and behavioral factors interact continually. This quantitative study is based on data from a measurement instrument comprised of two surveys adopted from previous research studies to measure pre-service teachers' preparation and self-efficacy. Based on data collected from 198 pre-service teachers in Saudi Arabia, the results show that the correlation between the participant's average self-efficacy score and the teacher preparation quality score is the largest. At the same time, the correlation between the participant's average self-efficacy and average opportunity is also quite significant. Thus, there is a linear relationship in the analysis. When a participant's gender and year in college were controlled, these correlation values changed slightly. The results also show that the average score of the preparation quality component has the most predictive power. Moreover, the participant's average learning opportunity score, the level of college education, and the interaction between the participant's average quality and opportunity scores are still significant in the model. This finding suggests that the Ministry of Education should work with the universities to improve and support the teacher education programs by providing them with all materials and resources they need to prepare pre-service teachers to be successful teachers in the future. Another critical research implication relates to this study's translated instruments for data collection. The North Carolina New Teacher Preparation Survey (NTPS) has 40 items, and researchers can use the Arabic version used in this study to evaluate the quality of the teacher education program.
