Book An Investigation of Plume Rise from Titan IV Rocket Launches

Download or read book An Investigation of Plume Rise from Titan IV Rocket Launches written by Joseph D. Brands and published by . This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space launches at Cape Canaveral Air Station (CCAS) and Vandenberg Air Force Base (vAFB) produce exhaust ground clouds from the solid rocket boosters and liquid hypergolic fuels containing several toxic substances. In order to estimate the health effects that would be imposed upon the public by scheduled launches, range safety officials rely on the Rocket Exhaust Effluent Diffusion Model to predict ground level concentrations of these substances. A drawback to the REEDM is its underprediction of the initial ground clouds stabilization height. This underprediction causes an overprediction of the ground level toxic substance concentrations. This thesis focused on increasing the accuracy of the clouds stabilization height. Therefore, a model was developed incorporating conservation principles of volume, momentum, and buoyancy to predict stabilization height values. As part of the model a predictive function for the coefficient of entrainment was developed based on meteorological conditions. This rate of entrainment is a critical factor in accurately predicting the rise behavior of ground exhaust clouds.

Book An Investigation of Instantaneous Plume Rise from Rocket Exhaust

Download or read book An Investigation of Instantaneous Plume Rise from Rocket Exhaust written by Paul F. Sand and published by . This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocket launches at Vandenburg Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Station produce exhaust clouds containing several toxic by-products, including HC1 and A12O3. These clouds rise to atmospheric stabilization heights, and then start dispersing and diffusing through the air. Upon reaching the ground, concentration levels of the toxins may present a human health risk. To predict these risks and concentration levels, range officials use a computer program titled the Rocket Effluent Exhaust Diffusion Model (REEDM). The version currently in use has been shown to underpredict the stabilization height of the exhaust cloud. This thesis examines the theory and algorithms used in REEDM that govern buoyant cloud rise. Further, modifications that improved the physics of the algorithms and changed an entrainment assumption were implemented and tested in REEDM. Stabilization heights predicted by REEDM using these modifications increased and in some cases closely agreed with observed heights. However, in some circumstances, predicted heights exceeded those observed.

Book Stratospheric Plume Dispersion Measurements from STS and Titan Solid Rocket Motor Exhaust

Download or read book Stratospheric Plume Dispersion Measurements from STS and Titan Solid Rocket Motor Exhaust written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plume expansion was measured from nine Space Shuttle and Titan IV vehicles at altitudes of 18, 24, and 30 km in the stratosphere. The plume diameters were inferred from electronic images of polarized, near-infrared solar radiation scattered from the exhaust particles, and these diameters were found to increase linearly with time. The expansion rate was measured for as long as 50 min after the vehicle reached altitude. Measurements made simultaneously at multiple altitudes showed that the expansion rate increased with increasing altitude for six measurements made at Cape Canaveral but decreased between 24 and 30 km for the one measurement made at Vandenberg AFB. The average expansion rates for all measurements are 4.3 +/- 1.0 m/s at 18 km, 6.8 +/- 1.9 m/s at 24 km, and 8.7 +/- 2.5 m/s at 30 km. Expansion rates varied from launch to launch by as much as a factor of 1.6 at 18 km, 2.2 at 24 km, and 2.7 at 30 km. No correlation between the expansion rate and wind speed or shear was evident. These data are compared to several models for diffusivity and are used to update a comprehensive particle model of solid rocket motor exhaust in the stratosphere. The expansion rates are required by models to calculate the spatial extent and temporal persistence of the local stratospheric ozone depletion cause by solid rocket exhaust.

Book Chemistry of the Upper and Lower Atmosphere

Download or read book Chemistry of the Upper and Lower Atmosphere written by Barbara J. Finlayson-Pitts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-11-17 with total page 993 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of one of the hottest areas of chemical research. The treatment of fundamental kinetics and photochemistry will be highly useful to chemistry students and their instructors at the graduate level, as well as postdoctoral fellows entering this new, exciting, and well-funded field with a Ph.D. in a related discipline (e.g., analytical, organic, or physical chemistry, chemical physics, etc.). Chemistry of the Upper and Lower Atmosphere provides postgraduate researchers and teachers with a uniquely detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative resource. The text bridges the "gap" between the fundamental chemistry of the earth's atmosphere and "real world" examples of its application to the development of sound scientific risk assessments and associated risk management control strategies for both tropospheric and stratospheric pollutants. Serves as a graduate textbook and "must have" reference for all atmospheric scientists Provides more than 5000 references to the literature through the end of 1998 Presents tables of new actinic flux data for the troposphere and stratospher (0-40km) Summarizes kinetic and photochemical date for the troposphere and stratosphere Features problems at the end of most chapters to enhance the book's use in teaching Includes applications of the OZIPR box model with comprehensive chemistry for student use
