Book excerpt: The resonant frequencies for the fundamental modes in circular cylindrical and rectangular parallelopiped high dielectric resonators have been calculated by computer for a range of values of physical dimensions and relative dielectric constant. The frequency range extends from zero to 50,000 Mc/sec, the relative dielectric constant from 50 to 1800, and physical dimensions from zero to 500 mils. Results are presented in tabular and graphical form with frequency plotted versus resonator length for parametric values of relative dielectric constant and cross sectional dimensions. A brief review of earlier work with high dielectric resonators is included. Expressions for the resonant frequency and fundamental mode field configurations are given. (Author).

Book excerpt: Dielectric resonators have applications as low-loss compact filters in the microwave region. Tuning characteristics of dielectric resonators that might allow for temperature compensation and frequency variability were investigated both theoretically and experimentally at L band. A secondary dielectric resonator that is offset in frequency from the tuned resonator provides a maximum tuning range of approximately 10 percent before an additional filter loss of 3 dB is incurred; the rate of tuning is slow since it is done by changing the resonator coupling (spacing). For fast tuning, a varactor is used in a coupled resonant circuit. Frequency changes can then be made in a time interval approaching 1/(filter bandwidth), but in this case the maximum tuning range before an additional filter loss of 3 dB is incurred is reduced to 2 percent of the filter frequency.

Book excerpt: Microwave dielectric materials play a key role in our global society with a wide range of applications, from terrestrial and satellite communication including software radio, GPS, and DBS TV to environmental monitoring via satellite. A small ceramic component made from a dielectric material is fundamental to the operation of filters and oscillators in several microwave systems. In microwave communications, dielectric resonator filters are used to discriminate between wanted and unwanted signal frequencies in the transmitted and received signal. When the wanted frequency is extracted and detected, it is necessary to maintain a strong signal. For clarity it is also critical that the wanted signal frequencies are not affected by seasonal temperature changes. In order to meet the specifications of current and future systems, improved or new microwave components based on dedicated dielectric materials and new designs are required. The recent progress in microwave telecommunication, satellite broadcasting and intelligent transport systems (ITS) has resulted in an increased demand for Dielectric Resonators (DRs). With the recent revolution in mobile phone and satellite communication systems using microwaves as the propagation media, the research and development in the field of device miniaturization has been a major challenge in contemporary Materials Science. In a mobile phone communication, the message is sent from a phone to the nearest base station, and then on via a series of base stations to the other phone. At the heart of each base station is the combiner/filter unit which has the job of receiving the messages, keeping them separate, amplifying the signals and sending then onto the next base station. For such a microwave circuit to work, part of it needs to resonate at the specific working frequency. The frequency determining component (resonator) used in such a high frequency device must satisfy certain criteria. The three important characteristics required for a dielectric resonator are (a) a high dielectric constant which facilitates miniaturization (b) a high quality factor (Qxf) which improves the signal-to-noise ratio, (c) a low temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency which determines the stability of the transmitted frequency. During the past 25 years scientists the world over have developed a large number of new materials (about 3000) or improved the properties of known materials. About 5000 papers have been published and more than 1000 patents filed in the area of dielectric resonators and related technologies. This book brings the data and science of these several useful materials together, which will be of immense benefit to researchers and engineers the world over. Zeroth-and first order analyses are described. These analyses are applied to dielectric resonator structures to be formed in GaAs substrate material by etching an annular gap in the substrate, thereby effectively leaving a circular cylindrical disc of dielectric material to function as a resonator. Plots of geometric parameter variations with frequency are provided for these resonator structures. Book excerpt: In recent years high permittivity whispering gallery mode (WGM) dielectric resonators (DR's) are showing more flexibility over their counterpart fundamental mode dielectric resonators. This is because of their high quality factors, good suppression of spurious modes and reasonable mechanical dimensions even at millimetres wavelength frequencies. For practical use, DR's are normally placed on top of substrates in order to couple with external microstrip lines. For this case a simple model based on dielectric waveguide is used in order to predict the microwave resonant frequencies of whispering gallery mode planar structured DRs. The measured resonant frequencies have shown an accuracy up to half a percent in most cases. A relatively simple mathematical model of the coupling between a dielectric resonator acting in WGE mode and a quasi-TEM mode microstrip line is proposed. Measured quality factors are found to be in good agreement with the proposed model. A relatively simple configuration of a WGM dielectric resonator oscillator employing shunt feedback and commercially available GaAs FET at 6.44 GHz is presented. Apart from having good efficiency, low frequency pushing and no hysteresis effect it features a low phase noise comparable to conventional dielectric resonator oscillators. Due to the restrictions imposed by conventional resonators, a stable low frequency source normally is multiplied up to millimetric frequencies. The characteristics of commercially available low parasitic mm-wave beam lead varactors have been employed for a simulated design of a frequency tripler from 18 GHz to 55 GHz. This design proved to be not only highly efficient, it most importantly could solve the design problems imposed by shunt-mounted packaged and chip varactor diodes in practice. The merits and de-merits of this conventional technique are then compared with the whispering gallery dielectric resonator mode oscillator.
