This book was released on 1965 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the azimuthal and vertical angles of arrival were made during the afternoon and early evening on pulse transmissions at 5 mcs over a 452 km east to west path using a six-element interferometer antenna system. The large systematic variations appearing in rapid time series measurements are shown to be due to the passage of large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances through the transmission path. A model is proposed for these perturbations, consisting of a long front whose cross section is elliptically elongated in the horizontal direction and whose interior contains an increase or decrease of electron density over the background profile valuuues. The angle of arrival variations which should be characteristic of the passage of such irregularities are developed. The variations are seen to be dependent on the direction of travel of the disturbances, and data samples showing each of the several characteristic variations are presented. Vertical incidence swept-frequency ionospheric soundings taken at one minute intervals at both the midpoint and receiving endpoint of the path are used to confirm the identification of the particular disturbance for each of these samples.

Book Observation of Large Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances by Spaced path H F Instantaneous Frequency Measurements

Download or read book Observation of Large Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances by Spaced path H F Instantaneous Frequency Measurements written by Stanford University. Stanford Electronics Laboratories and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instantaneous frequency of (WWV, 20mc, Wash., D.C.), and a stable signal at 17.8 Mc (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) were simultaneously recorded between Oct 1960 and Sep 1961 at Palo Alto, Calif., and Seattle, Wash. Traveling ionospheric disturbances were identified by noting the occurrence of similar frequency fluctuations appearing with appropriate time delays, and in appropriate order, on each of four available paths. The geometry of these paths is such that disturbances traveling from north to south, or vice-versa, are easily detected. The disturbances gave rise to either quasi-sinusoidal, or V-shaped fluctuations in recordings of frequency vs. time. If a given disturbance is assumed to travel along a great circle at constant speed, this speed can be estimated from the time interval between interception of the northernmost transmission path and the southernmost one. From the duration of the resulting fluctuation on a given path and the estimated speed of the disturbance, its effective spatial length can be inferred. (Author).

Book Ionospheric and Thermospheric Studies

Download or read book Ionospheric and Thermospheric Studies written by COSPAR. Plenary Meeting and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1992 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers presented at these meetings provide an updated review of the area and also cover a wide range of current research topics. This volume contains 46 selected papers covering the whole spectrum of modelling approaches, including analytical, empirical, semi-empirical and numerical models. A proportion of the papers deal with the energetics, dynamics and composition of just the thermosphere, whilst others are concerned with ionospheric behaviour at low, middle and high latitudes. Coupling phenomena figure prominently and numerical simulations are presented to show the coupling processes, feedback mechanisms and time delays associated with the interactions between the magnetosphere and ionosphere, the magnetosphere and thermosphere, and the mid-latitude ionosphere and plasmasphere.

Book On the Detection of Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances

Download or read book On the Detection of Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances written by A. Glenn Jean and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparison was made of sudden ionospheric disturbances (SIDs) reported in IER-FB Solar-Geophysical Data and SIDs detected at Boulder, Colorado, by project HANDS in February 1967. The FB reports were collected from single experiments. One of the main problems in the comparison was the relatively large spread in the times of SIDs reported to FB, and factors contributing to this spread in time are discussed. Some advantages in the collocated experiment system are shown to be 1) considerably reduced spread in starting times of SID signatures, 2) high detection sensitivity due to the ability to identify small but simultaneous perturbations in parallel data channels, 3) high level of confidence of SID observed in three or more data channels. Based on these findings, a suggestion is made for improving the SID detection and reporting through the addition of a uniform set of phase coherent equipment at three or more stations spaced around the earth to provide continuous SID monitoring.

Book Observation of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances by the Doppler Technique with Spaced Transmitters

Download or read book Observation of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances by the Doppler Technique with Spaced Transmitters written by John Emory Jones and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a radio investigation of traveling ionospheric disturbances carried out near Boulder, Colorado, over a 1-year period from June 1967 to June 1968. The three-dimensional motions of F2 layer disturbances were measured by the high frequency Doppler technique with spaced transmitters and at several probing frequencies. Horizontal motions were determined by cross-correlating three signals on frequencies near 5 MHz, whose reflection points were approximately at the corners of a horizontal equilateral triangle with 40-km sides. Vertical motions were determined from cross-correlation of signals on frequencies of 3.3, 4.0, and 5.1 MHz, whose reflection points were aligned vertically.

Book An Experimental Test of the Acoustic gravity Wave Interpretation of Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances

Download or read book An Experimental Test of the Acoustic gravity Wave Interpretation of Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances written by George D. Thome and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of simultaneous HF Doppler and UHF incoherent backscatter measurements of the travelling ionospheric disturbances observed at Arecibo (P.R.) during the summer of 1967. One of the prime objectives in conducting this series of experiments involving 3 spaced phase path sounders and the backscatter radar is to examine the gravity wave interpretation of the large scale travelling disturbances. The analysis of the observations is based upon three distinct techniques: (1) Cross-correlation analysis of the HF Doppler records for an accurate estimate of the wave velocity, (2) HF ray tracing for demonstrating the self-consistency of the HF and the incoherent backscatter data, and (3) the coupling of acoustic gravity waves to the ionospheric plasma. It is concluded from the results of the analysis that the large scale travelling ionospheric disturbances are truly a manifestation of the acoustic-gravity waves. Finally, some aspects of the analysis which will be refined in the next phase of the study are also outlined. (Author).

Book Artificial Ionospheric Disturbances Caused by Powerful Radio Waves

Download or read book Artificial Ionospheric Disturbances Caused by Powerful Radio Waves written by M. C. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial ionospheric disturbances evidenced as fluctuations in plasma density and geomagnetic field can be caused by powerful radio waves with a broad frequency band ranging from a few KHz to several GHz. The filamentation instability of radio waves can produce both large-scale plasma density fluctuations and large-scale geomagnetic field fluctuations simultaneously. The excitation of this instability is examined in the VLF wave injection experiments, the envisioned MF ionospheric heating experiments, the HF ionospheric heating experiments and the conceptualized Solar Power Satellite project. Significant geomagnetic field fluctuations with magnitudes even comparable to those observed in magnetospheric (sub)storms can be excited in all of the cases investigated. Particle precipitation and airglow enhancement are expected to be the concomitant ionospheric effects associated with the wave-induced geomagnetic field fluctuations.
