Book An Investigation of Ice Forces on Vertical Structures

Download or read book An Investigation of Ice Forces on Vertical Structures written by Ken-ichi Hirayama and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ice forces are the principal concern in designing offshore structures such as drilling platforms, transloading points, or bridge piers in Arctic regions. Although some results have been obtained by field measurements in recent years, there are still significant gaps in the knowledge of ice forces on structures. In order to fill some of these gaps, the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research has undertaken model studies on the investigation of ice forces on vertical piles. Model techniques for the study of ice-breaking phenomena have been developed, and the similarity between the model indications and prototype conditions has been demonstrated. Tests on the relationships between ice forces (ice strength) and pile diameter, ice thickness, and relative velocity (strain rate) between ice and structure have been completed. The experimental results were satisfactorily explained by a theoretical approach, and the combination of these relationships led to a basic empirical formula for the calculation of the maximum penetration strength for a circular pile, which agrees with available field measurements and also in part with model investigations in Russia. The suggested formula was modified for application to different structural shapes and degree of contact between ice and structure as well as for application to the indentation case of pile-ice interaction. Further studies are necessary to investigate the effect of ice temperature, scale effects and also the influence of salinity on the ice forces on structures. (Au)"--ASTIS online database.

Book Ice Forces on Rigid Vertical Cylindrical Structures

Download or read book Ice Forces on Rigid Vertical Cylindrical Structures written by D. S. Sodhi and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small-scale experimental study was conducted to characterize the magnitude and nature of ice forces during continuous crushing of ice against a rigid, vertical, cylindrical structure. The diameter of the structure was varied from 50 to 500 mm, the relative velocity from 10 to 210 mm/s, and the ice thickness from 50 to 80 mm. The ice tended to fail repetitively, with the frequency of failure termed the characteristic frequency. The characteristic frequency varied linearly with velocity and to a small extent with structure diameter. The size of the damage zone was 10 to 50% of the ice thickness, with an average value of 30%. The maximum and mean normalized ice forces were strongly dependent on the aspect ratio (structure diameter/ice thickness). The forces increased significantly with decreasing aspect ratio, but were constant for large aspect ratios. The maximum normalized forces appeared to be independent of strain rate. The effect of velocity on the normalized ice forces depended on structure diameter. The mean effective pressure or specific energy of ice crushing depended on both aspect ratio and ice-structure relative velocity. The energy required to crush the ice for the one failure cycle was obtained from the ice force records for each test, and was compared to the energy calculated from an idealized sawtooth shape for the force record, the maximum force, velocity and characteristic frequency data. Originator - supplied keywords included: Cold regions, Cold regions construction, Cylindrical test structures, Ice, Ice crushing, Ice forces, and Test facilities.

Book Ice Forces on Vertical Piles

Download or read book Ice Forces on Vertical Piles written by Donald E. Nevel and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The force that floating ice sheets can exert on vertical piles is important to the design of both military and civilian structures. Present design codes call for 400 psi as the crushing strength of ice without regard to the influencing factors and their variation. The forces which drive the ice into the structure can be water currents, wind, or thermal expansion. These driving forces may be large enough the cause the ice to fail at or near the surface. The purpose of this research is to define this limiting force level and gain a better understanding of the failure process in the ice. (Author).

Book Ice Forces on Flat Vertical Indentors Pushed Through Floating Ice Sheets

Download or read book Ice Forces on Flat Vertical Indentors Pushed Through Floating Ice Sheets written by Naoki Nakazawa and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structures placed in an ice environment should be able to withstand the ice forces that are produced by the motion of a floating ice sheet. To observe the crushing failure of ice and to characterize the magnitude and nature of ice forces, an experimental study was conducted by pushing vertical, flat indentors through floating ice sheets made up of freshwater, columnar ice. Depending on the velocity of the indentor, ductile or brittle behavior of ice was observed. Microcracks and macrocracks were observed during the tests. The energy used to produce the maximum ice force was found to be approximately the same for different indentor velocities. The positions of the resultant forces were found to be in the center of the contact area. The area of the ice damaged by the first peak loading of the identor was about the same, even when the indentor velocities were different. Acoustic emission signals were measured during indentation experiments, and these were found to correlate with the ice force that produces strain and microcracking in the ice. Keywords: Ice mechanics; Cracking/fracturing; Coastal engineering; Offshore structures; Load distribution; Crushing; Effective pressure; Freshwater ice; Ice forces; Laboratory tests; Macrocracking; Microcracking. Book Ice Structure Interaction

Download or read book Ice Structure Interaction written by Stephen J. Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUTAM-IAHR Symposium on Ice-Structure Interaction Professor Bez Tabarrok, Chairman of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) invited Professor Derek Muggeridge to organize a symposium on ice structure interaction. Dr. Muggeridge readily agreed and prepared a proposal that was endorsed by the CNC and presented to the General Assembly Meeting of IUTAM for their consideration. This Assembly gave its approval and provided the local organizing committee with the names of individuals who were willing to serve on the Scientific Committee. Dr. Muggeridge became chairman of this committee and Dr. Ian Jordaan became co-chairman of this committee as well as chairman of the local organizing committee. The symposium followed the very successful previous meeting, chaired by Professor P. Tryde in Copenhagen, by ten years. Both symposia uti lized Springer-Verlag to publish their proceedings. The Faculty of En gineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland were particul{lXly pleased to host this prestigious symposium as it marked the twentieth anniversary of its Ocean Engineering Research Centre.
