Book Treks Into Intuitive Geometry

Download or read book Treks Into Intuitive Geometry written by J. Akiyama and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written in a style that uncovers the mathematical theories hidden in our daily lives, using examples of patterns that appear in nature, arts, traditional crafts, as well as mathematical mechanics in architectural techniques. The authors believe that through conversations between students and mathematicians, readers may learn about the methods used by the originators of these theoriestheir trials, errors, and triumphsin reaching their various conclusions. The goal is to help readers refine their mathematical sense in terms of formulating valuable questions and pursuing them. In addition, the book aims to provide enjoyment in the application of mathematical principles to beautiful art and design by using examples that highlight the wonders and mysteries of these works found in our daily lives. To achieve these goals, the book tackles the latest exquisite results on polygons and polyhedra and the dynamic history of geometric research found around us. The term "intuitive geometry" was coined by Lszlo Fejes Tth and refers to the kind of geometry which, in Hilbert's words, can be explained to and appeal to the "man on the street." This book enables readers to enjoy intuitive geometry informally and instinctively. It does not require more than a high school level of knowledge but calls for a sense of wonder, intuition, and mathematical maturity. In this second edition, many new results, and elegant proofs on a variety of topics have been added, enhancing the books rich content even further.

Download or read book Descartes on Polyhedra written by P. J. Federico and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present essay stems from a history of polyhedra from 1750 to 1866 written several years ago (as part of a more general work, not published). So many contradictory statements regarding a Descartes manuscript and Euler, by various mathematicians and historians of mathematics, were encountered that it was decided to write a separate study of the relevant part of the Descartes manuscript on polyhedra. The contemplated short paper grew in size, as only a detailed treatment could be of any value. After it was completed it became evident that the entire manuscript should be treated and the work grew some more. The result presented here is, I hope, a complete, accurate, and fair treatment of the entire manuscript. While some views and conclusions are expressed, this is only done with the facts before the reader, who may draw his or her own conclusions. I would like to express my appreciation to Professors H. S. M. Coxeter, Branko Griinbaum, Morris Kline, and Dr. Heinz-Jiirgen Hess for reading the manuscript and for their encouragement and suggestions. I am especially indebted to Dr. Hess, of the Leibniz-Archiv, for his assistance in connection with the manuscript. I have been greatly helped in preparing the translation ofthe manuscript by the collaboration of a Latin scholar, Mr. Alfredo DeBarbieri. The aid of librarians is indispensable, and I am indebted to a number of them, in this country and abroad, for locating material and supplying copies.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Polyhedra written by Anthony Pugh and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyhedra: A Visual Approach provides an introduction to polyhedra for readers who are not necessarily mathematicians. The study of polyhedra - fascinating figures constructed of interrelated shapes - is usually regarded as a branch of geometry. In fact, most books on the subject have been written for readers with a mathematical background. However, Polyhedra: A Visual Approach describes these figures in simple, visual terms. This book focuses on regular and semiregular convex polyhedra first. Then these are used as bases for the development of several families of irregular figures, including geodesic polyhedra - the domes made famous by R. Buckminster Fuller. Polyhedra: A Visual Approach will interest readers from many different backgrounds. Mathematicians and scientists may discover that a visual approach opens up new possibilities. Artists, architects, designers, and engineers should find it a valuable exercise in three dimensions that increases their abilities in manipulating space. And general readers will be drawn to the uncomplicated description of polyhedra - fascinating figures that have inspired many a brilliant thinker. -- from back cover.

Book Automated Deduction in Geometry

Download or read book Automated Deduction in Geometry written by Francisco Botana and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-12 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Automated Deduction in Geometry, ADG 2006, held at Pontevedra, Spain, in August/September 2006 as a satellite event of the International Congress of Mathematicians, ICM 2006. The 13 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from the submissions made due to a call for papers - within the scope of ADG - shortly after the meeting. The papers show the lively variety of topics and methods and the current applicability of automated deduction in geometry to different branches of mathematics and to other sciences and technologies.

Book Learn from the Masters

Download or read book Learn from the Masters written by Frank Swetz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for high school and college teachers who want to know how they can use the history of mathematics as a pedagogical tool to help their students construct their own knowledge of mathematics. Often, a historical development of a particular topic is the best way to present a mathematical topic, but teachers may not have the time to do the research needed to present the material. This book provides its readers with historical ideas and insights which can be immediately applied in the classroom. The book is divided into two sections: the first on the use of history in high school mathematics, and the second on its use in university mathematics. The articles are diverse, covering fields such as trigonometry, mathematical modeling, calculus, linear algebra, vector analysis, and celestial mechanics. Also included are articles of a somewhat philosophical nature, which give general ideas on why history should be used in teaching and how it can be used in various special kinds of courses. Each article contains a bibliography to guide the reader to further reading on the subject.
