Book excerpt: Friendships outside of a heterosexual romantic relationship are common and fulfill needs for social support and intimacy. Cross-sex friendships (i.e., friendships with members of the opposite-sex) are generally as fulfilling as same-sex friendships and provide many of the same benefits (Monsour, 2001). However, cross-sex friendships may pose unique challenges to those in heterosexual romantic relationships. Using two studies, this research aimed to investigate the consequences of cross-sex friendship maintenance for different features of relationship functioning in heterosexual romantic relationships as well as potential mechanisms underlying these associations. For Study 1 (n = 347 individuals), I employed a cross-sectional (non-dyadic) design with participants in heterosexual romantic relationships to test whether individuals with a greater number of cross-sex friendships, or who believe that their romantic partner has a greater number of cross-sex friendships, report lower levels of three macro-level relationship outcomes: commitment, relationship satisfaction, and trust. In Study 2 (n = 108 dyads), I used a daily diary design with heterosexual romantic dyads to evaluate whether individuals’ and their romantic partners’ daily interactions with cross-sex friends predict changes in individuals’ relational maintenance behaviors and romantic relationship satisfaction. In both studies, I also examined the indirect effect of friendship maintenance on relationship outcomes via feelings of jealousy and perceived availability of alternatives to one’s own partner. Friendship maintenance was unrelated to romantic relationship outcomes in both Study 1 and Study 2. However, Study 1 provided support for the hypothesis that the cross-sex friendships individuals and their partners hold are indirectly related to participants’ relationship outcomes via availability of alternatives and feelings of jealousy, respectively. Additionally, Study 2 provided evidence that daily contact with friends (regardless of gender) is related to lower levels of relationship satisfaction via a greater availability of alternatives. Interestingly, there was not much evidence to suggest that these effects are moderated by characteristics of the friendships, the romantic relationships, or the individuals. Taken together, this research increases our understanding of how heterosexual couples successfully navigate the challenges of cross-sex friendships and two of the mechanisms underlying these experiences.

Book excerpt: Given that male-female friendships lack institutional guidelines or scripts to guide everyday interactions, sustaining these relationships can be complicated. Although researchers have recently begun to study relational maintenance patterns in cross-sex friendships, no study has yet to investigate sex's and dating status's direct influences on friendship maintenance. This investigation seeks to add to the field's academic understanding of these personal relationships. Specifically, the researcher sought to uncover the associations between 10 friendship maintenance behaviors, past sexual contact, valence of past sexual contact, and cross-sex friends' dating statuses. Quantitative data were collected from 277 participants at a large Southeastern university using a survey methodology. Overall, results indicate that patterns of relational maintenance do differ as a function of friendship level, past sexual involvement, valence of past sexual involvement, and cross-sex friends' dating statuses. Past sexual involvement associates with higher levels of relationship talk, avoidance of negativity, and flirting. In addition, valence of past sexual activity varies across friendship level and associates with higher levels of positivity and flirting. Lastly, dating status significantly affects 3 of the 10 maintenance behaviors: routine contact and activity, flirting, and humor. Linear, quadratic, and cubic relationships were found for these variables, respectively. Implications of results, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Overall, results found that cross-sex friendships and same-sex friendships do indeed share an overwhelming number of similarities than differences. However, behaviours tended to be perceived as more beneficial and more costly in same-sex friendships than in cross-sex friendships, suggesting perhaps a deeper level of intimacy in the former. Further, despite past empirical and theoretical assertions that cross-sex friendships contain the potential for romantic and sexual attraction, results found that sexual access to a cross-sex friend and being denied sexual access by a cross-sex friend did not occur frequently and was consistently viewed as neither costly nor beneficial. Short-term mating strategies was also not associated with attachment to a cross-sex friend. Results found conditional suport for both similarity and the attachment-security hypothesis as a means for explaining patterns of attachment styles across relationships. Findings also supported that individuals' ability to attach and intimately bond is not limited to romantic relationships, and that attachment to cross-sex friendships may be a mechanism geared toward long-term mating. The thesis concludes with Chapter Five, an overarching discussion of general research questions, key findings, and theoretical implications resulting from the study. Methodological limitations of the study and future research avenues are also outlined, as well as the clinical and social significance of the study and its findings.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis was to explore levels of satisfaction and perceived emotional support in heterosexual opposite sex friendships and intimate relationships. The first objective of this study was to examine whether men who reported higher levels of satisfaction within their intimate relationship would report fewer opposite sex friendships. Second, I examined the correlation between women’s reported satisfaction with their intimate relationship and the number of opposite sex friendships they had. Finally, I explored whether participants with lower satisfaction in their intimate relationship would report having more perceived emotional support from their opposite sex friendships. The sample included 151 participants (24 males, 127 females) who ranged from 18 years old to 29 years old and were in a heterosexual intimate relationship for six months or longer. Contrary to what I expected, results indicated a significant positive correlation for women between the level of satisfaction within the intimate relationship and the number of opposite sex friendships, with no other results being significant. Clinicians can then provide further support within therapy to explore the emotional support within intimate relationships and impacts from having opposite sex friendships (Coutinho et al. 2014; Cutrona, 1996).

Book excerpt: As the field of counseling psychology strives to embrace diversity and social justice issues, sexual minority issues have flourished into an active area of study among scholars and an area of focus for LGBT-affirming practitioners. One area of emphasis has been on how heterosexual people develop Anti-Heterosexist Identities. Some studies have noted the importance of friendship as it relates to Anti-Heterosexist Identity Development (Asta & Vacha- Haase, 2012; Duhigg, Rostosky, & Gray, 2010; DiStefano et al., 2000; Gelberg & Chojnacki, 1995; Larson, 2012), however, no known studies have more deeply explored the role of crosssexuality friendships. The purpose of this study is to examine the friendships between sexual minority people and heterosexual people in counseling psychology doctoral programs in order to gain an understanding of what impact close, interpersonal relationships have on heterosexual Anti-Heterosexist Identity Development. To examine how cross-sexuality friendships impact Anti-Heterosexist Identity Development, I employed a qualitative methodology, called constructivist grounded theory (Bryan & Charmaz, 2007). A purposive sampling strategy was utilized and included the use of faculty informants and the distribution of recruitment materials to counseling psychology doctoral programs and social media. Twenty-four heterosexual and sexual minority individuals that had experienced a close, cross-sexuality friendship during their doctoral program participated in 60-90 minute, semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Ten of those participants came back to participate in online focus groups in order to provide member-checking and additional information on certain topics that arose during the data analysis. Employing constructivist grounded theory analysis while also adhering to the main tenets of critical theory, a theoretical framework of how cross-sexuality friendships influence heterosexual Anti-Heterosexist Identity emerged. The theoretical model is comprised of four major themes and associated subthemes, including: History and Context, Description and Progression of the Friendship, Learning and Perception, and finally, Change and Action. The experience of heterosexual counseling psychology students in cross-sexuality friendships helped the participants in this study gain meaningful comprehension about sexual minority issues and people. The resulting theory holds implications not only for future research on this topic, but also for counseling psychology doctoral programs wanting to encourage their students to adopt Anti- Heterosexist Identities, by including a focus on the education about oppressive systems and heterosexism into the curriculum, by including experiential learning exercises, and by striving to achieve diversity among students, faculty, and staff.
