Download or read book An Introductory Lecture on Archaeology Delivered Before the University of Cambridge written by Churchill Babington Bd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture on Archaeology Delivered Before the University of Cambridge The following Lecture was divided in the delivery into two parts; illustrative specimens being exhibited after the conclusion of the delivery of each portion. It has been suggested that I should add in the form of notes a few books which may prove useful to the students of particular branches of Archæology; my best thanks are due to the Rev. T. G. Bonney and the Rev. W. G. Searle for their kind and valuable assistance in drawing up certain of the lists. For ancient art and archaeology K. O. Müller's Manual, so often referred to, will in general sufficiently indicate the bibliography, and it is only in a few departments, in numismatics more especially, that it has been deemed necessary to add anything to his references. M. Labarte's Handbook, from which a great part of the concluding portion of this lecture is derived, will do the same thing, though in a far less complete manner, for medieval art. Book Empire the British Museum and the Making of the Biblical Scholar in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Empire the British Museum and the Making of the Biblical Scholar in the Nineteenth Century written by Gregory L. Cuéllar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the modern period, the field of biblical studies has relied upon libraries, museums, and archives for its evidentiary and credentialing needs. Yet, absent in biblical scholarship is a thorough and critical examination of the instrumentality of the discipline’s master archives for elite power structures. Addressing this gap in biblical scholarship lies central to this book. Interrogated here is a premier repository or master archive of the discipline: the British Museum. Using an assemblage of critical theories from archival discourse to postcolonial studies, space theory to governmentality studies, the focal point of this book is at the intersections of the Museum’s rise to scientific prominence, the British Empire, and the conferring of scientific authority to modern biblical critics in the nineteenth century. Gregory L. Cuéllar initiates a season of historicization of the master archives of biblical studies and archival criticism.

Book Writing about Archaeology

Download or read book Writing about Archaeology written by Graham Connah and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Graham Connah offers an overview of archaeological authorship: its diversity, its challenges, and its methodology. Based on his own experiences, he presents his personal views about the task of writing about archaeology. The book is not intended to be a technical manual. Instead, Connah aims to encourage archaeologists who write about their subject to think about the process of writing. He writes with the beginning author in mind, but the book will be of interest to all archaeologists who plan to publish their work. Connah's overall premise is that those who write about archaeology need to be less concerned with content and more concerned with how they present it. It is not enough to be a good archaeologist. One must also become a good writer and be able to communicate effectively. Archaeology, he argues, is above all a literary discipline.

Book The Amateur and the Professional

Download or read book The Amateur and the Professional written by P. J. A. Levine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the growing divide in nineteenth-century intellectual circles between amateur and professional interest, and explores the institutional means whereby professional ascendancy was achieved in the broad field of studies of the past. It is concerned with how antiquarian 'gentlemen of leisure', pursuing their interests through local archaeological societies, were, by the end of the century, relegated to the sidelines of the now university-based discipline of history. At the same time it explores the theological as well as technical barriers which arrested the development of archaeology in this period. This is a notable contribution to the intellectual history of Victorian England, attending not simply to the ideas perpetrated by these communities of scholarship but to their social status, relating such social consideration to a more traditional intellectual history to create a new social history of ideas.
