Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Old Testament It is obvious, therefore, that the discussions can in no case be exhaustive such treatment can only be expected in commentaries to the individual books. While carefully considering all the more important alternatives, I have usually contented myself with presenting the conclusion which seemed to me most probable; and I have thought it better to discuss each case on its merits, without referring expressly and continually to the Opinions of Eng lish and foreign scholars. In order to bring the discussion within the range of those who have no special linguistic equipment, I have hardly ever cited Greek or Hebrew words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament However willingly I might have undertaken the labour of giving an entirely new form to this new edition of the Introduction to the Old Testament, ' my contemporaries have hitherto afforded me small occasion to exchange the results of my former researches against other convictions. I am obliged, therefore, to confine myself merely to remedy the defects of the former editions to the best of my judg ment and power, and bring the present one up to the level of the existing state of Biblical Literature. The proposed alterations, then, affect less the entire work. Than its details, and I h0pe to have omitted nothing essential from new works which may have appeared, either to its increase or improvement. May the public be only as well pleased with the present as with past editions! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by John Walter Beardslee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 Bleek's Introduction to the Old Testament which is here for the first time presented in an English dress, has been long and favourably known to Biblical students as, perhaps, the most complete and trustworthy of the works which, under the same title, and professing the same oh jects, have appeared with such rapidity in Germany during the last quarter of a century. Many as these so-called Introductions are, and various their degrees of excel lence, this of Bleek's deserves to be specially commended for the union of the qualities most essential to the character of such a work: thorough acquaintance with every depart ment of the subject, breadth of view, honesty and fairness of treatment, quickness of perception of the main points at issue, calmness of judgment, and, above all, deep reverence for Holy Scripture as the Revelation of the Mind and Will of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Indispensable Resource for Old Testament Studies" The present work is an attempt to evaluate the contents of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha against the vast background of knowledge that is now available for students of ancient Near Eastern life and culture. (From the Preface) With characteristic understatement, R. K. Harrison embarked on this massive attempt and produced a volume that for scrupulous detail, scholarly rigor, and sheer erudition has remained unmatched for nearly fifty years. Writing from his own apparently limitless scholarship combined with a conservative perspective, Harrison first reviews the entire history of Old Testament criticism and sets the Hebrew scriptures in their full historical and theological context. He then presents a detailed discussion of each Old Testament book, along with a lucid overview of the apocryphal books. Harrison s engagement of the perennial issues and problems of Old Testament scholarship make this classic text a vital foundation for a new generation of scholars. For contemporary Old Testament studies, this highly respected volume continues to be the essential point of departure."

Book Old Testament Introduction

Download or read book Old Testament Introduction written by John Howard Raven and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Introduction: General and Special An apology is due to those who read theological books for adding another to the already long list of volumes on the Higher Criticism. The apology is that the great majority of works on this subject are from the negative standpoint, while most of the others are too brief to be of much value, and substitute ridicule for argument. The orthodox theologian weakens his position by undervaluing the force of the radical arguments. He does not commend himself to fair-minded people by ignoring or ridiculing his opponents. The traditional view of the Old Testament has nothing to fear except from the ignorance and the prejudice of its adherents. The present volume has arisen primarily from the need of a conservative text-book which covers the whole range of the subject. The writer has endeavored to avoid on the one hand that over-conciseness which leaves the student in the dark and on the other that over-fullness which leaves him in a fog. As far as possible the arguments of the liberals are given in their own words, not only to conserve fairness but to encourage the student to read the opposite side of the case. This is the cause of the large number of quotations. The lists of words, parallel passages, and other details which are necessary for the argument in certain parts are intended for reference. It is hoped that they will open the way for individual research. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
