Download or read book A Short History of Japan Classic Reprint written by Ernest Wilson Clement and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Japan The author does not lay claim to originality; he has made use of all materials at hand and has given credit where credit is due. He has, however, applied his own interpretations to the historical and other events recorded and has tried to portray their meaning and their bearing, especially upon the evolution of Japan. There is no attempt at absolute uniformity in the transliteration of Japanese words, nor is there so much variety as to confuse. There is not much practical difference between Tokio and Tokyo; Ieyasu and Iyeyasu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint written by R. Van Bergen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Japan In the thirteenth century the houses in Kamakura were thrown down, and from fis sures in the neighbouring hills blue flames issued during the succeeding century; the head of the highest mountain in Japan, Fuji-san disappeared to a depth of 100 feet, so that the mountain lost 100 feet of its height. In the eighteenth century a terrible eruption of Fuji-san took place. The moun tain also changed somewhat its conformation, a new peak being produced, which was named Hoyei - san. Even in this century Japan has suffered severely from convulsions of the earth, landslips, and in consequence, disastrous floods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, Vol. 1: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese There is no one who is better equipped to edit or to write a work of this sort than Captain F. Brinkley, of Tokyo, who has spent forty years of his life in the Orient, a great portion of that time as correspondent of the London great dailies and as editor of the Japan Mail. It gives me the greatest pleasure to recommend him to all serious students of Japanese history. It must be apparent to any one who is paying attention to the present history-making epoch in the Orient that in the future the diplomatic as well as the business connections between Japan and America will be of far greater importance than they have ever been. It is difficult enough for two nations who speak the same language to thoroughly understand each other. It is far more difficult for two nations who speak different lan guages, whose traditions are unlike and whose nearest neighbours are frequently at variance with their respective policies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Japanese Literature Writers on European literatures are entitled to take for granted, on the part of their readers, a previous acquaintance with the leading facts of the political and religious history of the country with which they are dealing. In the case of Japan, however, it has been thought not superfluous to add a few data of this kind without a knowledge of which it is impossible to under stand the course of the literary development. Book An Introduction to the History of Japan

Download or read book An Introduction to the History of Japan written by Katsuro Hara and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of Japan The military achievements of Japan in the last twenty years have done much to make the world appreciate and acknowledge the intrinsic worth of the Japanese nation. It is, however, very doubtful whether the other nations find in us many other things to admire besides our military excellence. Some of them, indeed, without fully investigating their deeper causes, have entertained serious misgivings as to the probable consequence of our military successes. The continual occurrence of anti-Japanese movements in the various States of America and in the dependencies of Great Britain and Russia, countries with which Japan is most intimately connected, has been chiefly due to this want of knowledge as to the real state of affairs in Japan, the progress in the arts of peace, in science, literature, art, law and economics. Japan has a brilliant civilisation of which we can justly be proud. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, Its History, Arts, and Literature, Vol. 2 By the beginning of the twelfth century, the military power, as distinguished from that of the Court and the priests, had fallen, in tolerably equal proportions, into the hands of two families, the Taira and the Minamoto.1 Both were de scended from Emperors, and both were divided into a number of clans established in different parts of the Empire. The Taira had their head quarters in Kyoto, and their clans were para mount in the provinces near the capital. The Minamoto's sphere of influence was in the north and east. It was inevitable that these two should come into collision. The events that immedi ately preluded the shock may be briefly dismissed by saying that they sprang out of a dispute about the succession to the Throne. The Taira tri umphed, and their leader, Kiyomori, became the autocrat of the hour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Japan, Vol. 1: From the Origins to the Arrival of the Portuguese in 1542 A. D The third Of the three great movements alluded to, stands on an entirely different plane. It accomplished itself among a non-aryan people, a people who made its first acquaintance with Christianity only three hundred and fifty years ago, and, after a brief experience of the political effects Of the foreign cult, sternly proscribed it within the national bounds. TO this people, most of what is considered to be most distinctive in the common heritage of W'estern Culture was utterly alien. In some cases it was positively repellent, for the base Of the social structure in Japan was by no means identical with that of the West. W'ith us, thanks greatly to the Roman Law, the social unit is the individual; in Japan from time immemorial it has been the family. Hence for our intense individualism the islanders of the Far East could have, and had, but little sympathy. Book A History of the Japanese People from the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Japanese People from the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era Classic Reprint written by Frank Brinkley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Japanese People From the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era It is trite to remark that if you wish to know really any people, it is neces sary to have a thorough knowledge of their history, including their mythology, legends and folk-lore: customs, habits and traits of character, which to a superficial observer of a different nationality or race may seem odd and strange, sometimes even utterly subversive of ordinary ideas of morality, but which can be explained and will appear quite reasonable when they are traced back to their origin. The sudden rise of the Japanese nation from an insignificant position to a foremost rank in thercomitynof nations has startled the world. Except in the case of very, few who had-studied us intimately, we were a people but little raised above barbarism trying to imitate Western civilisation without any capacity for reallyassimilating-pr adapting it. At first, it was supposed that we had somehow undergone a sudden transformation, but it was gradually perceived that such could not-be. And was not the case; and a crop of books on Japan and the Japanese, deep and superficial, serious and fantastic, interest ing and otherwise, has been put forth for the benefit of those who were curious to know the reason of this strange phenomenon. But among so many books, there has not yet been, so far as I know, a history of Japan, although a study of its history was most essential for the proper understanding of many of the problems relating to the Japanese people, such as the relation of the Imperial dynasty to the people, the family system, the position of Buddhism, the influence of the Chinese philosophy, etc. A history of Japan of moderate size has indeed long been a desideratum; that it was not forthcoming was no doubt due to the want of a proper person to undertake such a work. Now just the right man has been found in the author of the present work, who, an Englishman by birth, is almost Japanese in his understanding of, and sympathy with, the Japanese people. It would indeed be difficult to find any one better fitted for the task by no means an easy one of presenting the general features of Japanese history to Western readers, in a compact and intelligible form, and at the same time in general harmony with the Japanese feeling. The Western public and Japan are alike to be congratulated on the production of the present work. I may say this without any fear of reproach for self-praise, for although my name is men tioned in the title-page, my share is very slight, consisting merely in general advice and in a few suggestions on some special points. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Japan Such knowledge can best be acquired by an historical survey, one which will trace the development of the Japa nese people and civilization from their beginnings, and in the light of this development endeavor to make clear the present ambitions and problems of the nation. The Japan of to-day is the product of centuries of growth. The advent of Western civilization sixty years ago did not cause a com plete break with the past. It has modified profoundly the inheritance bequeathed by that past, but the old Japan must be studied if the new is to be understood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan of the Japanese While the present volume is primarily intended for those whose knowledge of Japan is limited, or has still to be acquired, I hope that the most esoteric readers will find in it something that they did not know before. It is far from exhaustive, even of the elements of the subjects of which it treats, still moie so of the number which merited treatment. Its limits of space were prescribed, and chapters on Religion, Foreign and Domestic Politics, Colonial Expansion and Administration, the changes in the Economic and Social conditions Of life that have followed on the last war and are incidental to growing wealth and strength, and on the progress already made towards the attainment Of the Hegemony of the Pacific, have been necessarily excluded in favour of those which seem more likely to appeal to popular taste and requirements.
