Book 50 Must See Geological Sites in South Africa

Download or read book 50 Must See Geological Sites in South Africa written by Gavin Whitfield and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents 50 of the most recognizable and geologically interesting sites around South Africa, including some of palaeontological or historical renown and some of mining interest. The diverse selection includes sites such as Chapman’s Peak, Howick Falls, Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, Mapungubwe, Tswaing Meteorite Crater and the Fraserburg Fossil Surface. Each site is unpacked to reveal: key features; geological heritage; landscape and rock formations; topics of local or historical interest; things to see and do at the site and in the surrounding area. Maps and GPS pointers make the sites easy to find, and some of the more complicated features are explained by means of simplified diagrams. Nearly 1,000 colour images illustrate South Africa’s remarkable geology and bring the topic vividly to life, making the book suitable for armchair travel too.

Book Crustal Evolution of Southern Africa

Download or read book Crustal Evolution of Southern Africa written by A. J. Tankard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syntheses of the geology of major areas of the Earth's crust are increasingly needed in order that the features of, and the problems associated with, the secular evolution of the continents can be understood by a wide audience. Southern Africa is fortunate in having a remarkable variety of geological environments developed without many breaks over 3. 8 Ga, and many of the rock groups are household names throughout the geological world. In one respect the geology of Southern Africa is particularly important: cratonization clearly began as early as 3. 0 Ga ago, in contrast to about 2. 5 Ga in most other continental areas such as North America. This book documents very well the remarkable change in tectonic conditions that took place between the Early and Mid-Precambrian; we have here evidence of the very earliest development of rigid lithospheric plates. This book is a tribute to the multitudes of scientists who have worked out the geology of Southern Africa over many years and decades. Whatever their discipline, each provided a step in the construction of this fascinating story of 3. 8 Ga of crustal development. In the book the reader will find a detailed review of the factual data, together with a balanced account of interpretative models without the indulgence of undue speculation. One of its attractions is its multidisciplinary approach which provides a stimulating challenge to the reader.

Book Bibliography of South African Geology 1897

Download or read book Bibliography of South African Geology 1897 written by Harry P. Saunders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of South African Geology, 1897: Being a List of Books, Papers and Reports on the Subject, Parts I and II This list of Papers on South African Geology was begun some three years ago for my own convenience, in connection with my work as Inspector of Water Drills in the Service of the Colonial Government. In May, 1893, the South African Philo sophical Society, on the motion of Dr Muir, resolved to me morialize the Government in regard to a Geological Survey, and suggested that, as a preliminary step, a Bibliography should be compiled. At first it was my intention to have the list published by the Philosophical Society, but when the Geological Commission was appointed in 1895, and shortly thereafter interested itself in the matter, it seemed more natural that the publication should take place under its auspices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South African Geology Some people collect postage stamps, others, called geo logists, collect facts and docket and label them with an in telligence equal to that devoted by the stamp collectors to their subject. My book will be of very little use to those who wish to become scientists of this kind. I have en deavoured to describe the facts as far as possible in relation to their causes, and to give some insight into the processes of geological reasoning. I have used the simplest possible lan guage, because I hope that the book may fall into the hands of many people who, though not skilled in all the intricacies of scientific nomenclature, take an interest in nature and have a longing for a better understanding of the glories of this wonderful land of South Africa. In May, 1893, the South African Philosophical Society, on the motion of Dr Muir, resolved to memorialize the Government in regard to a Geological Survey, and suggested that, as a preliminary step, a Bibliography should be compiled. At first it was my intention to have the list published by the Philosophical Society, but when the Geological Commission was appointed in 1895, and shortly thereafter interested itself in the matter, it seemed more natural that the publication should take place under its auspices. There have been many drawbacks and delays consequent on the almost entire absence of Geological Journals and Proceedings of Societies in Cape Town, but a short visit to London in March - May this year enabled me to see many papers not to be found here. For much valuable help during that visit I have to thank Mr F. A Bather of the British Museum. My thanks are also due to the Geologists of the Commission for the titles of many Papers. I am well aware that the present lists are incomplete, but it was strongly represented to me that publication should no longer be delayed. Supplementary lists will be issued along with the Annual Report of the Geological Commission, and it is hoped that all the material thus tabulated will eventually be utilized in the production of a report showing the state of our knowledge of South African Geology up to the date of publication.
