Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Experimental Psychology of Beauty In this little book I have attempted to give an account of some experiments dealing with the psychology of the appreciation of beauty. An effort has been made to render every page intelligible to the general reader, and no previous knowledge of psychology is necessary. A few paragraphs less simple than the rest have been enclosed in square brackets. These can be omitted if desired, without the general drift of ideas being lost. It is only within recent years that men have at tempted to apply the method of experiment to the processes of the mind, and of such work experiments dealing with our appreciation of beauty form only one section. Yet such is the enthusiasm with which the subject has been taken up by a number of investigators that it will be impossible for the writer, in such a small book as this, to give a full account of all the results obtained. An attempt to give a bald summary of the results of all the experiments would probably have confused the novice, for whom this book is intended. I have thought it better, therefore, to deal in each chapter fairly fully with two or three typical and important series of experiments, grouping a number of supplementary experimental results about these. I have ventured to include among these a number of my own experiments, most of them hitherto unpublished. I regret that lack of space has prevented me from referring, except very briefly here and there, to musical experiments. Book The Experimental Psychology of Beauty

Download or read book The Experimental Psychology of Beauty written by C.W. Valentine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962, the experimental study of aesthetics was a field particularly associated with the name of C.W. Valentine, who in this book provided a critical review of research carried out since the end of the nineteenth century principally by British and American psychologists. The investigations described, many of them conducted by the author, are concerned with individual responses to what is commonly regarded as beautiful in painting, music, and poetry, an important distinction being made between the perception of objects as ‘beautiful’ as opposed to ‘pleasing’. The reactions of children and adults, and of people having different ethnic and social backgrounds, are explored in a variety of experiments dealing with specific elements, including colour, form, and balance in painting; musical intervals, discord, harmony, melody, and tempo; and rhythm, metre, imagery, and associations in classical and romantic poetry. Other experiments seek to disclose the temperamental and attitudinal factors underlying individual differences in the judgement and appreciation of specific works of art. Of particular interest are the studies of responses to modern paintings, poems and musical compositions. The findings throw light on the development of discrimination and taste and suggest the possibility of some common factor in the appreciation of these three arts. It was felt that critics as well as psychologists and aestheticians would find much to encourage reflection and to stimulate further research.

If that rash reviewer really thirsts for psychological aesthetics, he may find some temporary refreshment in the present volume, Which contains as much of the How and W by of Beauty and Ugliness as I have been able to squeeze out of some rather dry books and out of fifteen years of my own and my fellow-worker's observations. If he, or any other inquisitive person, should then remain With unslaked curiosity about asthetics, he must go to the Psycho logical Laboratories of Germany and America, Where he may, in return for further knowledge, be used up as an experimental subject. Book Experimental Psychology and Its Bearing Upon Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Experimental Psychology and Its Bearing Upon Culture Classic Reprint written by George Malcolm Stratton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Psychology and Its Bearing Upon Culture The aim of the present volume is to give an un technical account of certain groups of experiments in psychology and to show something of their signifi cance. As to the particular experiments that are of most interest and importance in this field, of course Opinions would differ. Every one who works in psychology soon finds himself attracted in special directions, and on the whole it is perhaps well for a writer to respect this element of personal affinity. But in preparing the book, I have aimed to present, as best I could within somewhat narrow limits, the character and value of the laboratory psychology, especially as bearing upon our moral and philosoph ical interests. In this way the book is planned to occupy a different field from that already so well covered by the excellent works of Titchener, San ford, and Scripture. Book Classic Experiments in Psychology

Download or read book Classic Experiments in Psychology written by Douglas G. Mook and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 2004-12-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical survey course in psychology has time for only limited presentation of the research on which our knowledge is based. As a result, many students come away with a limited understanding of the role of experiments in psychological science. Where do experiments come from and how are they conducted? What are the pitfalls and how can we avoid them? What advantages do they have over intuition, authority, and common sense as guides to knowing and acting? What distinguishes research-based psychology from psychobabble? What have we learned from experimentation in psychology? This book presents, in more depth than textbook treatment permits, the background, conduct, and implications of a selection of classic experiments in psychology. The selection is designed to be diverse, showing that even for research in vastly different areas of study, the logic of research remains the same—as do its traps and pitfalls. This book will broaden and deepen the understanding of experimental methods in psychological research, examining where the research questions come from, how questions can be turned into experiments, and how researchers have faced the problems presented by research in psychology.
