Book An Introduction to Saline Lakes on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau

Download or read book An Introduction to Saline Lakes on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau written by Zheng Mianping and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1956 the author has been making extensive and detailed investigations of saline lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. On the basis of large amounts of reliable first-hand data and multidisciplinary analysis, the book deals with the temporal-spatial evolution of the plateau saline lakes and the prospects for inorganic salts and organic resources and their exploitation and protection, as well as the relationships between saline lakes and global changes. This book is the first English monograph on saline lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau - the `Roof of the World'. Compared with books about saline lakes in other areas of the world, this monograph is written in a multidisciplinary, comprehensive and systematic way. It may be used by graduate students, teachers, researchers, field geologists and engineers as a reference book in research, teaching, etc.

The volume presents a selection of contributions on aquatic biodiversity, written by colleagues from the editorial board, fellow editors of aquatic journals and former students and collaborators. Contributions deal with a wide spectrum of topics related to aquatic biodiversity and cover fields such as actual- and palaeolimnology, taxonomy, and fundamental and applied limnology. Even reconnaissance chapters on management and cultural impact of water bodies are included. The book combines state-of-the-art contributions in aquatic sciences.

Book excerpt: The Vth International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes was held at Hotel Titikaka on the shores of that lake, 22--29 March 1991 with participants from 16 countries. Twenty-three papers presented by the participants, plus an additional one reporting a microcosm study on salinity effects, constitute the present volume. The papers cover the wide array of subject matters and scales characteristic of our `interdiscipline' and represent the symposium well. All manuscripts submitted for these proceedings were critically reviewed by at least three referees and are representative of saline lake research, developed around the world in the three-year period since the last symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the latest development in the biotechnological application of extremophiles. Along with this the impact of climate change and environmental pollution on loss of diversity of extremophiles is also discussed. This is crucial as the loss of this diversity is related with the loss of many bioactive compounds and bacteria of ecological importance. This volume outlines applications of extremophiles in biotechnology, nanotechnology, and bioremediation.

Book The Pantanal of Pocon

Download or read book The Pantanal of Pocon written by Charles W. Heckman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-04-30 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many famous wetlands in the world that have been deemed important for the homeostasis ofthe biosphere and accorded some form ofprotected status in view of the richness of their flora and fauna. T}1e Pantanal, located almost directly in the center ofthe South American continent, is among the largest such wetlands in the world. It is, in fact, the largest wetland that is still in a nearly natural state and has not been extensively modified by man for agriculture. The extent of the region covered by flood waters at the end of each rainy season varies from year to year, sometimes considerably, so estimates of the exact area it occupies have varied enormously. The size of the 2 2 Pantanal has been reported to be between 80,000 km (Bonetto, 1975) and 250,000 km (Tundisi and Matsumura-Tundisi, 1985). The most co~on1y accepted estimates at the present time are approximately 130,000 to 140,000 km , supported by estimates made from Nimbus-7 satellite observations (Hamilton et al. , 1996). However, Por (1995) suggested that the area extending into Bolivia and Paraguay has not been satisfactorily 2 surveyed, leading him to accept the figure of 200,000 km as the area of the entire Pantanal, ineluding all of its extensions. The main reason for the year to year variation in the extent of the flooding is the considerable difference in timing of the rainfall on the watershed.

Book Thermophilic and Halophilic Extremophiles in Eurasian Environments

Download or read book Thermophilic and Halophilic Extremophiles in Eurasian Environments written by Hongchen Jiang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eBook is the product of a partnership between the Norwegian Eurasia Program and the China Silk Road Program. At the present, our knowledge on microbiology and biogeochemistry from Eurasian (hyper)saline and thermal ecosystems is limited. Such information is essential to the field and contributes to a comprehensive understanding of microbial metabolic pathways and functions involved in biogeochemical processes in extreme ecosystems. This eBook includes a series of recent progress in microbial diversity, ecological functions, and biogeochemistry in Eurasian (hyper)saline and thermal ecosystems with the use of next generation sequencing, omics technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration. We hope that this eBook would serve as a model for international cooperation and as a source of inspiration for more achievements in Eurasian (hyper)saline and thermal ecosystems in the future. The complete list of authors and co-authors includes 68 highly-qualified specialists from 9 countries. All chapters in the eBook were edited by authoritative experts. We would like to emphasize the great goodwill, esteem and cooperation extended to each other among the authors, reviewers and editors who contributed to the successful completion of this eBook.

Book Water

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brahma Chellaney
  • Publisher : Georgetown University Press
  • Release : 2013-07-25
  • ISBN : 1626160120
  • Pages : 398 pages

Download or read book Water written by Brahma Chellaney and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pioneering study about the relationship between fresh water, peace, and security in Asia from the Middle East to Siberia but with a special focus on South and Southeast Asia. Asia is home to many of the world's great rivers and lakes, but its huge population and booming economies make it the most water-scarce continent on a per capita basis. Over extensive irrigation, pollution, and global warming add to the demographic and economic pressures on Asia's fresh water supplies. The location of the sources for much of South and Southeast Asia's fresh water is in the Chinese controlled Tibetan Plateau, and China's increasing exploitation of these water sources have created growing geopolitical tensions that could boil over into conflict. India is reliant on fresh water from Tibet, which gives the Chinese uncomfortable leverage over India and further exacerbates their unsettled border disputes. Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other countries of the region also find themselves in similarly vulnerable positions where water is scarce and the sources are increasingly being exploited and polluted upstream by the continent's most powerful country. Brahma Chellaney proposes strategies to avoid conflict and more equitably share and preserve Asia's water resources.
