Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Practical Physics: For Colleges and Schools This little work is intended for students beginning Practical Physics, whether in the upper forms of schools, or at University or Technical Colleges. Although not assuming any previous conversance with the subject, it provides more than sufficient for the Intermediate Examination for degrees in Pure Science or Engineering, and will be found suitable also for University Scholarship Candidates. It comprises all the various branches of elementary physics, and has been written with a view to the use of apparatus which is either of standard type or of simple forms easily provided in any laboratory. Experience has shown that some points are frequent stumbling-blocks to certain classes of students, and not less so when they are unduly laboured by printed instructions. These are accordingly indicated in the text as possibly needing oral elucidation by the demonstrator. It is thus hoped that the letterpress is thereby reduced to a minimum without any loss of essential clearness. At the head of each experiment stands a list of apparatus needed. This facilitates its setting out by the assistant, and serves to show the student whether he has what he needs. Although the book is divided into seven parts, each experiment is identified by its number simply, since these numbers run consecutively through the book. Each experiment contains an explicit statement of the exercises to be performed by the student and of the form in which his results should be presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1950, this book was designed to practically teach upper-level school students the properties and behaviours of materials in elementary physics. The book is divided into three principal sections, 'Mechanics,' 'Light' and 'Heat', and presents a collection of theories, experiments and observations on each topic. Notably, the experiments are based on previously set examination questions and include 'Torsional oscillations of a suspended bar', 'Oblique incidence on a lens' and 'Resistance of a stretched wire'. Linear equations and diagrams are included throughout to support the text, and an introduction is also provided. This book will be of great value to researchers and scholars of physics and to anyone with an interest in the history of education.

Book Practical Physics Vol 1

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physics, Vol. 1: For Schools and the Junior Students of Colleges It has frequently been a matter of remark that while many schools are provided with fully equipped chemical laboratories, yet very few have any appliances for teaching Practical Physics. The reason is certainly not to be found in any fundamental unsuitability of Practical Physics as a training for the mind, inasmuch as the subject is universally acknowledged to be of very great importance in this respect. There are several causes which have militated against the introduction of Practical Physics, the chief, perhaps, being the want of properly trained teachers, the absence of organised methods, and the difficulty of obtaining suitable apparatus. We venture to think that, as the importance of the subject comes to be realised, there will be no lack of good teachers, each of whom will be capable of controlling a system of instruction suitable to the boys under his charge. Again, we think that instrument makers are becoming more alive to the requirements of elementary students, their strength hitherto having been mainly directed towards the manufacture of instruments suitable for commercial purposes and scientific research. It was represented to us by several teachers that abstracts of our Elementary Lessons in Practical Physics might be made the basis of good school courses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to demonstrate the purpose and critical approach that should be made to all experimental work in physics. It does not describe a systematic course in practical work. The present edition retains the basic outlook of earlier editions, but modifications have been made in response to important changes in computational and experimental methods in the past decade. The text is in three parts. The first deals with the statistical treatment of data, and here the text has been extensively revised to take account of the now widespread use of electronic calculators. The second deals with experimental methods, giving details of particular experiments that demonstrate the art and craft of the experimenter. The third part deals with such essential matters as keeping efficient records, accuracy in arithmetic, and writing good, scientific English. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

Download or read book Practical Work in Physics Vol 3 written by Walter George Woollcombe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Work in Physics, Vol. 3: For Use in Schools and Colleges; Light and Sound AN essential feature in the four parts Of Practical P/zysz'cs for Se/zools and Colleges, Of which this is the third, is to Offer a fairly complete experimental course in the ground covered at but a trifling cost. The apparatus required is inexpensive, and may be readily Obtained or easily made from the ordinary stock Of a Chemical Laboratory. In addition to what is stated in the Introduction to the first part, it may be remarked that the subjects, here treated Of, do not appeal so much to the student's power Of Observation as to that Of his judgement. In most Of the experiments in Light he has to decide what is to him the most definite image of an Object, in Sound what the nearest approach to unison between two musical notes. In the latter case accuracy depends chiefly on his physiological perception Of tone, which varies considerably in different persons. In the author's experience only five per cent. Of the students he has had to deal with have so little ear for music that the experiments in Sound for them are not possible.
