Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Plant Geography The importance of vegetation for the student of geo graphy, and in the teaching of geography, is gradually being recognized. As an indication of the quality of a region it must be taken into account. For instance, the differences between the denser forests Of the low-lying swampy lands round equatorial rivers and the Opener woods of the better drained higher ground between them are of great importance. In practical affairs the distri bution of this or that plant association may Often be taken as a guide to the profitable extension of cultivation of this or that crop. Book An Introduction to Historical Plant Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Historical Plant Geography Classic Reprint written by E. V. Wulf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Historical Plant Geography The editors of chronica botanica are under obligations to Dr. H. M. Raup, of the Arnold Arboretum, and to Dr. And Mrs. Stanley A. Cain, of the University of Tennessee, for their assistance and advice in preparing the present text for the press. The appearance of this volume at this time emphasizes the fact that science is not limited by international boundaries and that the work of one investigator prosecuted in one country under one regime, contrib utes materially to the advancement of knowledge in all countries. I should like to quote a statement of Mr. Raymond fosdick in a recent report of the Rockefeller Foundation: In the shadows that are deepen ing over Europe the lights of learning are fading one by one. The conception of knowledge as an international responsibility has vanished. The free flow of ideas across boundary lines between laboratories and universities had dried up. Elsewhere the exigencies of war have erased the opportunities for intellectual and cultural life as that term was understood a few years ago. And yet, in spite of the war, and in Spite of the fact that the U. S. S. R. Has suffered most grievously, it has been possible to provide for the English translation of the present volume in Russia, and its publication in the United States of America. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981 Historical Plant Geography is an introductory treatment of historical plant geography and stresses the basic theoretical frame of the subject. The book is about neither the study of vegetation nor the concept of the ecosystem, instead focusing on the much older tradition concerned with analysing the geographical distribution of individual species and natural plant groups. Important areas are discussed, such as global plate tectonics and sea-floor spreading, plant maps are introduced and there is a basic treatment of recent advances in plant taxonomy. The book will appeal to students and academics of geography, botany, ecology and environmental sciences.

Book Essay on the Geography of Plants

Download or read book Essay on the Geography of Plants written by Alexander von Humboldt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) looms large over the natural sciences. His 1799–1804 research expedition to Central and South America with botanist Aimé Bonpland set the course for the great scientific surveys of the nineteenth century, and inspired such essayists and artists as Emerson, Goethe, Thoreau, Poe, and Church. The chronicles of the expedition were published in Paris after Humboldt’s return, and first among them was the 1807 “Essay on the Geography of Plants.” Among the most cited writings in natural history, after the works of Darwin and Wallace, this work appears here for the first time in a complete English-language translation. Covering far more than its title implies, it represents the first articulation of an integrative “science of the earth, ” encompassing most of today’s environmental sciences. Ecologist Stephen T. Jackson introduces the treatise and explains its enduring significance two centuries after its publication.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant World: Its Past, Present, and Future; An Introduction to the Study of Botany It must be clearly understood that the above equation does not profess to Show all the various changes under gone by the crude material during its transformation into starch; all that is intended is to show the propor tions of the various chemical elements before and after the change. Carbonic dioxide and water are both inorganic sub stances that is, their chemical composition is not necessarily the result of life; on the other hand, starch is an organic substance, because its chemical constitution is determined by a living body, or by life. From the above it will be seen that the material composing the bodies of animals and plants is not of a kind peculiar to themselves, but consists of the most abundant of chemical elements forming inorganic matter, so that organic matter only means the rearrangement of the elements or constituents of inorganic matter in new proportions, and this is true of every organic product, whether animal or vegetable. It will have been observed that food is indispensable to the well-being of the individual; but in spite of an un diminished food supply, individuals do not continue to live on for ever, but in every form of life there is a limit to the existence of the individual terminating in death, and which is shadowed in under normal conditions by the lessened physical and chemical activity of the entire organism, resulting in the liberation of less energy, which to a great extent constitutes the ow of life manifested during the earlier period of the existence of an indi vidual. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975 and in a second edition in 1980, Plant Geography was the first text in biogeography that provided an adequate treatment of modern plant population theory. It is an introduction to the subject for students of both geography and biology. The author develops a series of plant geographic concepts that are based primarily in plant population biology, treating in turn processes that operate at the level of the individual plant and the plant population; interactions between plant populations; environmental conditions and plant dissemination in shaping plant species' distributions, and the geography of vegetation. Emphasis throughout is placed upon the dynamic nature of the earth's plant cover, and the interplay between contemporary conditions and historical events in shaping plant distributions and evolution.
