Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Mental Philosophy, on the Inductive Method Some eight years ago I published a small work, entitled "Elements of Psychology," Part I., in which I gave a brief sketch of the development of the intellectual faculties, and expressed my intention of completing that sketch by a similar analysis of the emotions and the will. That intention has never been fulfilled. On reconsidering the subject, I found that the whole treatment of psychology required to be thrown into a more regular and scientific form; that outlines needed to be filled up with details; and that the speculative element required to be more completely eliminated from the inductive application of facts. In place, therefore, of perfecting the sketch already published, I determined to commence again de novo; to enter more minutely into the analysis of the intellectual powers; to carry that analysis onward to the phenomena of volition and feeling; and then to issue the whole in a complete form. This determination I have now carried into effect. The work herewith presented to the public is, consequently, not in any sense a re-elaboration of the former one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Mental Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 2: In Two Parts The attempt made in the following pages to determine the meaning of some of the principal terms employed in Philosophy, may, to some, appear an ambitious undertaking; while, to others, it may seem merely a verbal affair. If to emulate the Great of old he ambition, to that the author must plead guilty; for Aristotle himself composed a Philosophical Vocabulary; and, on the other hand, that the object of such a work is useful and dignified, will be allowed by those who are best acquainted with the difficulties of Philosophy. I may mention in particular two distinguished philosophers of the present day, who have thus expressed themselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward John Hamilton's The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy is one man's personal philosophy of a metaphysical system and human thought. Hamilton's work was written with the goal of being used as a philosophy textbook. The Human Mind is a massive volume that spans over 700 pages and deals with a wide range of topics. The book begins with Hamilton offering a definition of mental philosophy, which is an important place to start and helps to provide the reader with the necessary context from which to approach the subject. The author tackles a wide range of subjects throughout the book, mostly focused on the relationship between the mind and the physical body and human brain. Included chapters separately discuss human intellect, the objectivity of thought, human senses, association and suggestion, memory, the rational faculty, and probable reasoning, among many more topics. Each chapter is written so as to stand alone from the others, however the reader will likely find it necessary to read the complete work in order to truly grasp the author's philosophy. The Human Mind is an impressive work of modern philosophy. Hamilton is clearly a student of philosophy, as his work frequently references many of the great philosophical works of the past. Despite the size of the volume, Hamilton's style and the formatting of the book into short chapters make this an easily readable text. Readers interested in philosophy of mind will find The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy to be a pleasant read. While Edward Hamilton is not remembered as a great philosopher, the author has pieced together an interesting personal philosophy, and one that deserves to be read by students of modern philosophical writings. As it is designed chicfly for those who are young, and are in a course of education, it lays claim to no other meritfthan what might ordinarily be expected in a text-book, founded on the inquiries of many valuable writers. Guided by their researches, it endeavours to give a con densed, but impartial view of Mehtal Philosophy, so far as its principles are understood at the present time and the writer has learnt from a number of esteemed instructers of youth, that his design is approved by them. He is by no means insensible to this favourable sentiment and if the present work should prove to be the means of awakening an increased interest in mental science, he will feel himself amply rewarded for what ever trouble it may have occasioned. Book The Process of Inductive Inference Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Process of Inductive Inference Classic Reprint written by Frank Thilly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Process of Inductive Inference But what right have we to pass from particulars to uni versals? Aristotle seems to justify the procedure in two ways. The particular, he believes, arouses in the mind the universal. We perceive the particular, e. G., Callias, but perception includes the universal, e. G, man.3 That is, the perception of the particu lar arouses in our minds the idea of the universal, of the all. In the words of Thomas Taylor, a translator and commentator of Aristotle: Induction is so far subservient to the acquisi tions Of science, as it evocates into energy in the soul, those uni versals from which demonstration consists. For the universal, . Which is the proper Object Of science, is not derived from par ticulars, since these are infinite, and every induction Of them must be limited to a finite number. Hence the perception Of the all and the every is only excited, and not produced, by induc tion. 4 In other words the category of totality seems to be a function Of the mind that is aroused or excited by the perception Of particular things. The mind makes the leap from the part to the whole. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Dugald Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interested in the nature of the mind? Then you should read Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind, a metaphysical tour-de-force by one of the Enlightenment's most influential thinkers. Dugald Stewart was a Scottish philosopher dedicated to discovering a philosophy of mind by using Sir Francis Bacon's inductive method of reasoning. Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind, which was published in three volumes, is one of his most comprehensive writings on the phenomena of consciousness. In this first volume, Stewart takes readers step by step through an examination of the mind. The book begins with a chapter explaining why it is valuable, indeed essential, to study human consciousness. This is in keeping with Enlightenment thinkers, who were reminding Western civilization that studying art, philosophy and the nature of the mind itself was an endeavor that would benefit humanity. It is with these lofty aspirations that Stewart begins his exploration. Stewart takes on nearly every subject that preoccupied philosophers of the day. For example, the chapter on memory ably deconstructs the different kinds of memories, the way memory seems to be acquired and retained, and how it can be improved. This is an example of using inductive reasoning to reveal the laws applicable to memory and what it means for human consciousness. Many major philosophers appear in this book, as Stewart explains their main theories. The highlight of this section is the conversation about Nomialists versus Realists. In the debate about the nature of reality, Nomialists and Realists remain the two most entrenched positions in the Western world. Nomialists believe that there are no universal truths; instead there are things particular to a person's own creation. Stewart surveys the major players, like Hume, Hobbes and Berkeley for the Nomialists, and Plato and Aristotle for the Realists. Many sections of the book conclude with a chapter where Stewart addresses the material he discussed, anticipating readers' questions and concerns. This creates a sense that the reader is communicating with a professor. It is here where Stewart's legacy is greatest, because he was a professor of John Stuart Mill and many other contributors to Western thought. Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind allows the reader to learn from one of the best philosophers on the subject.
