Book First Order Mathematical Logic

Download or read book First Order Mathematical Logic written by Angelo Margaris and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Attractive and well-written introduction." — Journal of Symbolic Logic The logic that mathematicians use to prove their theorems is itself a part of mathematics, in the same way that algebra, analysis, and geometry are parts of mathematics. This attractive and well-written introduction to mathematical logic is aimed primarily at undergraduates with some background in college-level mathematics; however, little or no acquaintance with abstract mathematics is needed. Divided into three chapters, the book begins with a brief encounter of naïve set theory and logic for the beginner, and proceeds to set forth in elementary and intuitive form the themes developed formally and in detail later. In Chapter Two, the predicate calculus is developed as a formal axiomatic theory. The statement calculus, presented as a part of the predicate calculus, is treated in detail from the axiom schemes through the deduction theorem to the completeness theorem. Then the full predicate calculus is taken up again, and a smooth-running technique for proving theorem schemes is developed and exploited. Chapter Three is devoted to first-order theories, i.e., mathematical theories for which the predicate calculus serves as a base. Axioms and short developments are given for number theory and a few algebraic theories. Then the metamathematical notions of consistency, completeness, independence, categoricity, and decidability are discussed, The predicate calculus is proved to be complete. The book concludes with an outline of Godel's incompleteness theorem. Ideal for a one-semester course, this concise text offers more detail and mathematically relevant examples than those available in elementary books on logic. Carefully chosen exercises, with selected answers, help students test their grasp of the material. For any student of mathematics, logic, or the interrelationship of the two, this book represents a thought-provoking introduction to the logical underpinnings of mathematical theory. "An excellent text." — Mathematical Reviews

Download or read book Capsule Calculus written by Ira Ritow and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief introductory text presents the basic principles of calculus from the engineering viewpoint. Excellent either as a refresher or as an introductory course, it focuses on developing familiarity with the basic principles rather than presenting detailed proofs. Topics include differential calculus, in terms of differentiation and elementary differential equations; integral calculus, in simple and multiple integration forms; time calculus; equations of motion and their solution; complex variables; complex algebra; complex functions; complex and operational calculus; and simple and inverse transformations. Advanced subjects comprise integrations and differentiation techniques, in addition to a more sophisticated variety of differential equations than those previously discussed. It is assumed that the reader possesses an acquaintance with algebra and trigonometry as well as some familiarity with graphs. Additional background material is presented as needed.

Book Advanced Strength of Materials

Download or read book Advanced Strength of Materials written by J. P. Den Hartog and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four decades ago, J.P. Den Hartog, then Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wrote Strength of Materials, an elementary text that still enjoys great popularity in engineering schools throughout the world. Widely used as a classroom resource, it has also become a favorite reference and refresher on the subject among engineers everywhere. This is the first paperback edition of an equally successful text by this highly respected engineer and author. Advanced Strength of Materials takes this important subject into areas of greater difficulty, masterfully bridging its elementary aspects and its most formidable advanced reaches. The book reflects Den Hartog's impressive talent for making lively, discursive and often witty presentations of his subject, and his unique ability to combine the scholarly insight of a distinguished scientist with the practical, problem-solving orientation of an experienced industrial engineer. The concepts here explored in depth include torsion, rotating disks, membrane stresses in shells, bending of flat plates, beams on elastic foundation, the two-dimensional theory of elasticity, the energy method and buckling. The presentation is aimed at the student who has a one-semester course in elementary strength of materials. The book includes an especially thorough and valuable section of problems and answers which give both students and professionals practice in techniques and clear illustrations of applications.
