Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The paper discusses the formation of pidgin Liberian English. A Pidgin language is a language created from the need of people with different native languages to communicate. Pidgin languages are often created to serve one specific purpose. Most often a Pidgin facilitates people that want to trade or serves as a way of understanding between settlers and natives in cases of colonization. A Pidgin language is one that has no native speakers. If it acquires native speakers by children growing up having the specific language as their native language, then it is categorized as a Creole language.

Book Liberian English Phrasebook and Dictionary

Download or read book Liberian English Phrasebook and Dictionary written by John C. Rigdon and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a first step to document a language which til this time has been entirely oral. Liberian English (Kolokwa) has been used for almost 200 years at least by the people of Liberia, but up until just recently it has not been recognized as a dialect of pidgin of English. The first academic studies of the language date back to the 1970's and although several academic papers have been written in the past 25 years, no one has taken the initiative to create a dictionary. The typical process in documenting an oral language is the translation of the Bible, but that has not been done yet in the case of Kolokwa. Gullah, which is a close sister-language has a New Testament which was completed in 2005. Jamaican Patois also now has a Bible translation, completed in 2012. While the number of native speakers of Gullah is probably less than 1,000 and Jamaican Patois has 3 million speakers, the estimates for Kolokwa speakers reach 1.6 million people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was the first to provide a comprehensive survey of linguistic research into African-American English and is widely recognised as a classic in the field. It covers both the main linguistic features, in particular the grammar, phonology, and lexicon as well as the sociological, political and educational issues connected with African-American English. The editors have played key roles in the development of African-American English and Black Linguistics as overlapping academic fields of study. Along with other leading figures, notably Geneva Smitherman, William Labov and Walt Wolfram, they provide an authoritative diverse guide to these vitally important subject areas. Drawing on key moments of cultural significance from the Ebonics controversy to the rap of Ice-T, the contributors cover the state of the art in scholarship on African-American English, and actively dispel misconceptions, address new questions and explore new approaches. This classic edition has a new foreword by Sonja Lanehart, setting the book in context and celebrating its influence. This is an essential text for courses on African-American English, key reading for Varieties of English and World Englishes modules and an important reference for students of linguistics, black studies and anthropology at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

  • Author : Jonny Steinberg
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 0099524228
  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Little Liberia written by Jonny Steinberg and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his latest book, Little Liberia: An African Odyssey in New York, Steinberg takes us to Park Hill Avenue on Staten Island, where a community of Liberians have made their home. Through interviews and shadowing of two community leaders, Steinberg strives to understand the peculiarities of this community; while it appears at times as if a piece of Liberia has been sliced off and dropped in New York, the Park Hill community is ravaged by conflict between different interest groups. To understand what is going on in 2008 New York, Steinberg travels back - back to Liberia and back to the country's tragic recent history of civil war, military coups and mass exterminations. The story of Liberia is a gruesome and miserable one but Steinberg's empathy for his subjects never allows the narrative to descend into voyeurism. The combination of hard nosed investigative journalism, a gift for storytelling and an obvious empathy for the characters that he shadows makes Steinberg an author who demands to be read, whatever the subject matter. A brilliant and important book which will delight Steinberg's thousands of followers and doubtless earn him many more"--Book Lounge.
