Book excerpt: The Ohio State Highway Testing Laboratory has been making soil tests for the past 25 years, starting with a modest 117 samples in 1934 to 32,202 samples in 1958. For the first 21 years the hand method for determining the liquid limit was used; an experienced operator could perform 60 to 70 liquid and plastic limit tests in an 8-hr day. The drawback to the hand method was that a new operator needed a training period of as much as a week and even then some never became proficient. Also experienced operators had to test known samples periodically in order to check their ability.
