Download or read book An Introduction to Asymmetric Solitary Waves written by Jüri Engelbrecht and published by Longman Scientific and Technical. This book was released on 1991 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to cover the fundamentals of asymmetric solitary waves. The preliminary part contains the ordered classification of solitary waves and the derivation of evolution equations. As a basis, nonlinear conservative systems are decribed with special attention given to the formation of solitary (mainly symmetric) waves from initial data. The main part of the book describes wave motion with certain energy influx leading to asymmetric solitary waves. Two cases are treated separately - systems perturbed by energy influx and systems with essential energy influx.

Download or read book Spectral Methods in Soliton Equations written by I D Iliev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-11-21 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soliton theory as a method for solving some classes of nonlinear evolution equations (soliton equations) is one of the most actively developing topics in mathematical physics. This book presents some spectral theory methods for the investigation of soliton equations ad the inverse scattering problems related to these equations. The authors give the theory of expansions for the Sturm-Liouville operator and the Dirac operator. On this basis, the spectral theory of recursion operators generating Korteweg-de Vries type equations is presented and the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur scheme, through which the inverse scattering method could be understood as a Fourier-type transformation, is considered. Following these ideas, the authors investigate some of the questions related to inverse spectral problems, i.e. uniqueness theorems, construction of explicit solutions and approximative methods for solving inverse scattering problems. A rigorous investigation of the stability of soliton solutions including solitary waves for equations which do not allow integration within inverse scattering method is also presented.

Download or read book Introduction to Soliton Theory Applications to Mechanics written by Ligia Munteanu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is planned to provide the application of the soliton theory to solve certain practical problems selected from the fields of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and biomechanics. The work is based mainly on the authors’ research carried out at their home institutes, and on some specified, significant results existing in the published literature. The methodology to study a given evolution equation is to seek the waves of permanent form, to test whether it possesses any symmetry properties, and whether it is stable and solitonic in nature. Students of physics, applied mathematics, and engineering are usually exposed to various branches of nonlinear mechanics, especially to the soliton theory. The soliton is regarded as an entity, a quasi-particle, which conserves its character and interacts with the surroundings and other solitons as a particle. It is related to a strange phenomenon, which consists in the propagation of certain waves without attenuation in dissipative media. This phenomenon has been known for about 200 years (it was described, for example, by the Joule Verne's novel Les histoires de Jean Marie Cabidoulin, Éd. Hetzel), but its detailed quantitative description became possible only in the last 30 years due to the exceptional development of computers. The discovery of the physical soliton is attributed to John Scott Russell. In 1834, Russell was observing a boat being drawn along a narrow channel by a pair of horses.
Download or read book Nonlinear Waves in Solids written by A. Jeffrey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travelling wave processes and wave motion are of great importance in many areas of mechanics, and nonlinearity also plays a decisive role there. The basic mathematical models in this area involve nonlinear partial differential equations, and predictability of behaviour of wave phenomena is of great importance. Beside fluid dynamics and gas dynamics, which have long been the traditional nonlinear scienes, solid mechanics is now taking an ever increasing account of nonlinear effects. Apart from plasticity and fracture mechanics, nonlinear elastic waves have been shown to be of great importance in many areas, such as the study of impact, nondestructive testing and seismology. These lectures offer a thorough account of the fundamental theory of nonlinear deformation waves, and in the process offer an up to date account of the current state of research in the theory and practice of nonlinear waves in solids.

Download or read book Asymmetric Dual Core Waveguides written by Soloman Raju Thokala and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-11 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the dynamical behavior of self-similar waves in asymmetric dual-core waveguides. The proposed dual-core waveguide consists of two closely spaced adjoining fibers in which one fiber is active and the other is passive. Due to the linear coupling between them, the dynamics of the wave propagating through the passive core can be controlled by manipulating the dynamics of the wave propagating in the active core. The optimal pulse compression or amplification of these waves as the length of the fiber tends to infinity is presented. The exact Mobius transform self-similar solutions that propagate through these waveguides self-similarly are subject to simple scaling rules. The book includes experiments conducted to corroborate the analytical predictions.
Download or read book A Journey Into the Nonlinear World written by Jüri Engelbrecht and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a personal story about being involved in the study of nonlinear phenomena for more than half a century. The focus is on the development of ideas and the resulting knowledge. This is the visible part of research, but much is usually hidden. The author describes how the ideas were generated and how an "invisible college" of friends and colleagues has emerged. The presentation is spiced by thoughts about the beauty of science and philosophical considerations on the complex world, where nonlinear interactions play an important role. The book is in some sense a biography but not so much about the personal life of the author -- it is about science and its actors. Based on the author's experience in many European research centres and science policy institutions, it reflects on the development of knowledge in nonlinear dynamics as well as science policy actions over the second half of the 20th century and the first quarter of the 21st century. Graduates and postgraduates interested in the progress of research will find the book particularly engaging.
Download or read book Nonlinear Waves in Elastic Crystals written by Gérard A. Maugin and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical modelling of changing structures in materials is of increasing importance to industry where applications of the theory are found in subjects as diverse as aerospace and medicine. This book deals with aspects of the nonlinear dynamics of deformable ordered solids (known as elastic crystals) where the nonlinear effects combine or compete with each other. Physical and mathematical models are discused and computational aspects are also included. Different models are considered - on discrete as well as continuum scales - applying heat, electricity, or magnetism to the crystal structure and these are analysed using the equations of rational mechanics. Students are introduced to the important equations of nonlinear science that describe shock waves, solitons and chaos and also the non-exactly integrable systems or partial differential equations. A large number of problems and examples are included, many taken from recent research and involving both one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems as well as some coupled degress of freedom.
Download or read book Questions About Elastic Waves written by Jüri Engelbrecht and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the modelling of mechanical waves by asking the right questions about them and trying to find suitable answers. The questions follow the analytical sequence from elementary understandings to complicated cases, following a step-by-step path towards increased knowledge. The focus is on waves in elastic solids, although some examples also concern non-conservative cases for the sake of completeness. Special attention is paid to the understanding of the influence of microstructure, nonlinearity and internal variables in continua. With the help of many mathematical models for describing waves, physical phenomena concerning wave dispersion, nonlinear effects, emergence of solitary waves, scales and hierarchies of waves as well as the governing physical parameters are analysed. Also, the energy balance in waves and non-conservative models with energy influx are discussed. Finally, all answers are interwoven into the canvas of complexity.
Download or read book Nonlinear Waves in Active Media written by Jüri Engelbrecht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TIlis volume contains the contributions to the Euromech Colloquium No. 241 on Nonlinear Waves in Active Media at the Institute of Cybernetics of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, Tallinn, Estonia, USSR, September 27-30, 1988. The Co-chairmen of the Euromech Colloquium felt that it would be a good service to the community to publish these proceedings. First, the topic itself dealing with various wave processes with energy influx is extremely interesting and attracted a much larger number of participants than usual - a clear sign of its importance to the scientific community. Second, Euromech No. 241 was actually the first Euromech Colloquium held in the Soviet Union and could thus be viewed as a milestone in the extending scientific contacts between East and West. At the colloquium 50 researchers working in very different branches of sci ence met to lecture on their results and to discuss problems of common interest. An introductory paper by I. Engelbrecht presents the common motivation and background of the topics covered. Altogether 36 speakers presented their lectures, of which 30 are gathered here. The remaining six papers which will appear elsewhere are listed on page X. In addition, three contributions by authors who could not attend the colloquium are included. The two lectures given by A.S. Mikhailov, V.S. Davydov and V.S. Zykov are here published as one long paper.
Download or read book Applied Wave Mathematics II written by Arkadi Berezovski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers contributions on various aspects of the theory and applications of linear and nonlinear waves and associated phenomena, as well as approaches developed in a global partnership of researchers with the national Centre of Excellence in Nonlinear Studies (CENS) at the Department of Cybernetics of Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia. The papers chiefly focus on the role of mathematics in the analysis of wave phenomena. They highlight the complexity of related topics concerning wave generation, propagation, transformation and impact in solids, gases, fluids and human tissues, while also sharing insights into selected mathematical methods for the analytical and numerical treatment of complex phenomena. In addition, the contributions derive advanced mathematical models, share innovative ideas on computing, and present novel applications for a number of research fields where both linear and nonlinear wave problems play an important role. The papers are written in a tutorial style, intended for non-specialist researchers and students. The authors first describe the basics of a problem that is currently of interest in the scientific community, discuss the state of the art in related research, and then share their own experiences in tackling the problem. Each chapter highlights the importance of applied mathematics for central issues in the study of waves and associated complex phenomena in different media. The topics range from basic principles of wave mechanics up to the mathematics of Planet Earth in the broadest sense, including contemporary challenges in the mathematics of society. In turn, the areas of application range from classic ocean wave mathematics to material science, and to human nerves and tissues. All contributions describe the approaches in a straightforward manner, making them ideal material for educational purposes, e.g. for courses, master class lectures, or seminar presentations.

Download or read book Modelling of Complex Signals in Nerves written by Jüri Engelbrecht and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes fundamental physical principles, together with their mathematical formulations, for modelling the propagation of signals in nerve fibres. Above all, it focuses on the complex electro-mechano-thermal process that produces an ensemble of waves composed of several components, besides the action potential. These components include mechanical waves in the biomembrane and axoplasm, together with the temperature change. Pursuing a step-by-step approach, the content moves from physics and mathematics, to describing the physiological effects, and finally to modelling the coupling effects. The assumptions and hypotheses used for modelling, as well as selected helpful concepts from continuum mechanics, are systematically explained, and the modelling is illustrated using the outcomes of numerical simulation. The book is chiefly intended for researchers and graduate students, providing them with a detailed description of how to model the complex physiological processes in nerve fibres.
