Book An Intelligent Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithm in Next Generation Wireless Networks

Download or read book An Intelligent Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithm in Next Generation Wireless Networks written by Yaw Nkansah-Gyekye and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the thesis research is to design such vertical handoff decision algorithms in order for mobile field workers and other mobile users equipped with contemporary multimode mobile devices to communicate seamlessly in the NGWN. In order to tackle this research objective, we used fuzzy logic and fuzzy inference systems to design a suitable handoff initiation algorithm that can handle imprecision and uncertainties in data and process multiple vertical handoff initiation parameters (criteria); used the fuzzy multiple attributes decision making method and context awareness to design a suitable access network selection function that can handle a tradeoff among many handoff metrics including quality of service requirements (such as network conditions and system performance), mobile terminal conditions, power requirements, application types, user preferences, and a price model; used genetic algorithms and simulated annealing to optimise the access network selection function in order to dynamically select the optimal available access network for handoff; and we focused in particular on an interesting use case: vertical handoff decision between mobile WiMAX and UMTS access networks. The implementation of our handoff decision algorithm will provide a network selection mechanism to help mobile users select the best wireless access network among all available wireless access networks, that is, one that provides always best connected services to users.

Book An Intelligent Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithm

Download or read book An Intelligent Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithm written by Sureshkumar V. and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next generation wireless networks (NGWN) should be compatible with other communication technologies to offer the best connectivity to the mobile terminal, which can access any IP based services at any time from any network without the knowledge of its user. It requires an intelligent vertical handover decision making algorithm to migrate between technologies that enable seamless mobility, redundant best connection and minimal terminal power consumption. Currently existing decision engines are simple, proprietary, and its handover is only based on the received signal strength which has been proven unintelligent. The proposed decision algorithm in this book gains intelligence by combining fuzzy logic system to handle imprecise data, multiple attribute decision making to handle multiple attributes for decision making, and context aware strategies to reduce unnecessary handover. It also detects new network which offers best connectivity than current network and does authentication, and mobile IP registration before making the handover; thereby reducing the packet loss to ensure high quality of service.

Book Intelligent Vertical Handover Management in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Intelligent Vertical Handover Management in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Ammar Haider and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The upcoming generation of wireless networks are characterized by seamless mobility across wireless access networks belonging to different radio access technologies. This requires the heterogeneous access networks to be integrated together, and the mobile terminals to be equipped with multiple radio interfaces allowing the users to roam across different networks. Vertical Handover (VHO) is the process of transparent switching from one access network to other. To achieve seamless heterogeneous mobility, simple, robust and effective vertical handover mechanisms must be devised. The entire vertical handover process can by divided into three stages: VHO Preparation, VHO Decision and VHO Execution. Ideally, a vertical handover should complete without causing any disruption in the communication and with a minimum overhead on the network. To achieve these goals, each of the three stages in VHO should be individually optimized. This research aims to devise a vertical handover implementation that performs as close to ideal behaviour as possible. For this purpose, we have proposed new or enhanced algorithms corresponding to all three VHO stages. A heterogeneous network model comprises of two major types of networks - cellular networks with wide coverage areas, and wireless local area networks (WLAN) with small coverage but providing higher bandwidth at a lower cost. To optimize the VHO preparation phase, we have developed a hybrid vertical handoff method for maximizing WLAN utilization in a WLAN-cellular integrated environment. We accurately determine the timing instants for initiation of vertical handover for the mobile terminals that enter the WiFi hotspots, stay there for some time and then leave the area. The proposed method ensures that transition between cellular and WiFi networks should be with minimum disruption while utilizing WiFi signals for as long as possible. As a result, the mobile nodes get advantages of lowest probability of handover failure and minimum number of unnecessary handovers. The second phase, VHO decision should incorporate multiple parameters to select the best network from a list of available candidate networks. The list of possible decision metrics includes link quality, system QoS parameters, user preferences, monetary cost, application type, movement speed etc. To arrive at a unified decision, as per our proposal, the best candidate network is chosen by employing a multiple-criteria decision making algorithm named PROMETHEE. This approach yields the desired benefit of providing better QoS experience to end users. For the third phase in vertical handover (VHO execution), we have focussed on the specific admission control problem. We have introduced concepts from Online Social Networking (OSN) Sites into admission control and handoff scenarios, by use of OSN proxy servers running on WLAN access points. Because of an ever-increasing popularity of OSNs this solution hold a lot of potential. Using the access points as OSN proxy servers leads to a substantial localization of social network traffic within WLAN which is a great advantage when considered globally. We have formulated and evaluated a Social-Connectivity-aware Vertical Handover (SCVH) algorithm for efficient dissemination of social network feeds. This algorithm introduces a novel measure of social importance of users requesting for admission to WLAN by calculating their 'graph centrality' measures. According to our proposed SCVH, users with high importance value are given a high priority for handover to WLAN network. Performance evaluation of our proposed techniques is carried out in a network simulation environment which models a heterogeneous network scenario. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed schemes are successful in optimizing VHO performance, which should result in a nearly seamless handover across heterogeneous wireless networks.

Book A Constrained MDP based Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithm for Wireless Networks

Download or read book A Constrained MDP based Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithm for Wireless Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4th generation wireless communication systems aim to provide users with the convenience of seamless roaming among heterogeneous wireless access networks. To achieve this goal, the support of vertical handoff is important in mobility management. This thesis focuses on the vertical handoff decision algorithm, which determines the criteria under which vertical handoff should be performed. The problem is formulated as a constrained Markov decision process. The objective is to maximize the expected total reward of a connection subject to the expected total access cost constraint. In our model, a benefit function is used to assess the quality of the connection, and a penalty function is used to model the signaling incurred and call dropping. The user's velocity and location information are also considered when making the handoff decisions. The policy iteration and Q-learning algorithms are employed to determine the optimal policy. Structural results on the optimal vertical handoff policy are derived by using the concept of supermodularity. We show that the optimal policy is a threshold policy in bandwidth, delay, and velocity. Numerical results show that our proposed vertical handoff decision algorithm outperforms other decision schemes in a wide range of conditions such as variations on connection duration, user's velocity, user's budget, traffic type, signaling cost, and monetary access cost.

Book Resource Allocation in Next Generation Wireless Networks

Download or read book Resource Allocation in Next Generation Wireless Networks written by Wayne Li and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next generation wireless and mobile communication systems are rapidly evolving to satisfy the demands of various network users. Due to the great success and enormous impact of IP networks, high-speed transmission is now possible for both indoor and outdoor wireless systems, internet access and web browsing have become the ruling paradigm for next generation system. It is envisioned that new generation wireless networks and hand-held terminals will support a wide variety of multimedia services such as multimedia web browsing, video and news on demand, mobile office system, stock market information, and so on, to mobile users anywhere, anytime in an uninterrupted and seamless way with low-powered handsets. The characteristics of wireless links, as well as the desire to maintain connectivity while on the move, offer significant challenges to provisioning quality of service and the related performance is of central interest. Since the resources (such as time, frequency and code) in the wireless segments of such networks are very limited, over-dimensioning the network resource is equivalent to poor capital investment, while congestion at busy hours could mean lost calls and lost revenues. It is therefore critical for wireless network designers to utilise these resources efficiently and effectively. In response to the above demand for next generation wireless and mobile communication systems, this book aims at providing a timely and concise reference of the current activities and findings in the relevant technical fields. The primary goal is to address the key technical issues pertaining to the integrated new systems and present novel technical contributions. The book contains 14 invited chapters from prominent researchers working in this area around the world.

Book Optimization of Vertical Handover Decision Processes for Fourth Generation Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Optimization of Vertical Handover Decision Processes for Fourth Generation Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Xiaohuan Yan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a vertical handover decision (VHD) scheme for optimizing the efficiency of vertical handover processes in the Fourth Generation (4G) heterogeneous wireless networks. The scheme consists of three closely integrated modules: Handover necessity estimation, handover target selection, and handover triggering condition estimation. Handover necessity estimation module determines whether a handover is necessary to an available network. Handover target selection module chooses the ``best'' network among th eavailable candidates based on a set of criteria. Finally, handover triggering condition estimation module determines the right moment to initiate a handover out of the currently connected network.4G wireless networks are expected to support mechanisms for tight integration and cooperation of divergent access network technologies. In such networks of heterogeneous nature, roaming users will experience frequent handovers across network boundaries. Thus, to ensure seamless roaming and efficient resource usage over dissimilar networks, intelligent VHD algorithms need to be used extensively. The research project presented in this thesis report focuses on this problem and provides an optimized VHD scheme, which minimizes the handover failures, unnecessary handovers and connection breakdowns whilst maintaining users' satisfaction at high levels. In addition, the scheme also provides mechanisms for mobile applications to control the tradeoff between the usage of the preferred access network and number of handovers or connection breakdowns.Simulation based performance evaluations demonstrate that the scheme reduces the number of handover failures, unnecessary handovers and connection breakdowns by up to 80%, 70% and 70%, respectively. They also show an increase of up to 50% in the satisfaction level of users.
