Although connections have been demonstrated, their significance has remained enigmatic. How and why were apparently utilitarian vessels, or the wooden tools used to make them, distributed widely across the landscape? This book assesses Woodland Period interactions using technofunctional, mineralogical, and chemical data derived from Swift Creek Complicated Stamped sherds whose provenience is fully documented from both mortuary mounds and village middens along the Atlantic coast. Together, these data demonstrate formal and functional differences between mortuary and village assemblages along with the nearly exclusive occurrence of foreign-made cooking pots in mortuary contexts. The Swift Creek Gift provides insight into the unique workings of gift exchanges to transform seemingly mundane materials like cooking pots into powerful tools of commemoration, affiliation, and ownership.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results of a formal descriptive analysis, comparative analysis, thin-section analysis, and thermoluminescence dating of a ceramic assemblage from site 11Mx109 believed to date to the late Middle Woodland (circa AD 400). Site 11Mx109 is located above the Ohio River in the Black Bottom, Massac County, Illinois and was excavated in 1974 by Jon Muller as part of Southern Illinois University's field school in archaeology. The assemblage is unique to the area and cannot be fit into the previously established local cultural sequence. Consisting primarily of grog-tempered plainware and including some grog-tempered decorated wares commonly associated with Hopewellian types, the 11Mx109 pottery looks completely dissimilar from the recognized local Middle Woodland pottery. Such a level of participation in Hopewellian trade and interaction has not been documented previously in southern Illinois. The data from this research are used to consider the source and scope of lingering Hopewellian influence in the lower Ohio River valley as well as issues concerning the assumed degree of cultural continuity and population diversity in the region at the close of the Middle Woodland Period.

Book excerpt: This research focuses on the nature and extent of social relationships between two Late Woodland Lewis phase villages, ca. A.D. 650 to 900, in southern Illinois and western Kentucky. These villages are the Cypress Citadel site in Johnson County, Illinois (111JS76), and the McGilligan Creek site in Livingston County, Kentucky (19LV197). Relationships between the two communities are examined through a detailed comparison of their ceramic assemblages, especially the decorated pottery. Chi square and Cramer's V statistics are used along with the social interaction and information exchange theories to determine the most likely to association between the sites. The results suggest a distancing of the social relations between these sites over their 250-year occupations. With a lack of firm temporal data, however, these conclusions are only a best-fit model. Other significant similarities and differences are noted which provide clues for future avenues of study.
