Book excerpt: Purpose: To determine evidence-based leadership behaviors that positively influence nurse managers' performance outcomes in the acute care setting. Design: Integrative literature review Methods: CINAHL and MEDLINE databases were searched 2004-2014 using "leadership behaviors of nurse managers", and "nurse manager performance outcomes" terms for research in English, peer-reviewed journals meeting this review's purpose. Findings: Ten studies support the use of transformational leadership behaviors by nurse managers to positively influence their performance outcomes. Conclusions: Strengthening nurse manager leadership skills will be a positive step in addressing the challenges of an emerging shortage of registered nurses. Relevance to Nursing Education: Findings are relevant in determining the needed content of nursing education to support nurse managers in becoming effective, transformational leaders.

At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book excerpt: In today's evolving health care system, effective nursing leadership is crucial to the advancement of the nursing profession. The style of management and leadership behaviors have been shown to affect work environments, including the level of nurse job satisfaction and nurse turnover rates. Increasing body of evidence shows that many nurses perceive being unsupported by nursing leaders, with complaints ranging from feeling undervalued and disempowered to hostile communication behaviors. Decreased level of nurse job satisfaction can have many detrimental consequences, including burnout, disengagement, poorer performance, and increased turnover rates, all of which compromise the ability of health care organizations to provide safe and effective patient care. Because the level of job satisfaction among staff nurses has been shown to affect patient outcomes, knowing what improves the level of satisfaction is significant in any health care organization. Therefore, there is an obvious need for health care organizations to undergo transformation by redefining effective leadership attributes and functions as well as education about and development of leadership skills and behaviors. The transformational leadership approach has been shown to have a positive impact on job satisfaction of staff nurses, resulting in improved relationships between staff nurses and managers and a strong desire to maintain membership in the organization. Leaders who use this approach have been shown to create healthy working environments that foster staff nurse trust in management, which has an impact on both the quality of nurses09́ work life and the quality of patient care. This proposal will include an implementation plan for the integration of transformational leadership in the current work flow health carehcare organization by way of increasing awareness of transformational leadership qualities and attributes among staff nurses work flowe managers.

Described as "wonders in action" these nurse managers often perform the duties of clinical experts, business managers, and administrators of multiple units or programs. While it is clear that nurse managers learn clinical skills through formal education programs and day-to-day nursing practice, it is less clear how they learn the leadership skills necessary for their roles. A synthesis of nursing research suggests that nurse managers may role model the leader behaviors of their nurse executives. Using a descriptive comparative design, 22 acute care nurse executive/nurse manager sets from three Pacific northwest states completed a demographic questionnaire and the Leader Effectiveness Adaptability Description - Self (LEAD-S) (Hersey & Blanchard, 1988). Data analysis showed that the dominant leadership style of the nurse executives was Participating. The dominant leadership style of the nurse managers was Selling. Both of these styles emphasize high relationship behaviors.
