It is a reflection ofthe serious dialog and assessments going on all over the world,across a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, as we contemplate the next major milestone in mankind's romance with space: the transition from exploration and experimentation to commercial and defense exploitation. This exploitation is already in full swing in the space communications area. Both military and civilian objectives are being pursued with increasingly more sophisticated systems such as large antenna reflectors with active shape control. Both the NATO and Warsaw pact alliances are pursuing permanent space stations in orbit: large structural systems whose development calls for in-situ fabrication and/or assembly and whose operation will demand innovations in controls technology. The last ten years have witnessed a fairly brisk research activity in the dynamics and control oflarge space structures in orderto establish a technology base forthe development of advanced spacecraft systems envisioned for the future. They have spanned a wide spectrum of activity from fundamental methods development to systems concept studies and laboratory experimentation and demonstrations. Some flight experiments have also been conducted for various purposes such as the characterization of the space enviroment, durability of materials and devices in that environment, assembly and repair operations, and the dynamic behavior of flexible structures. It is this last area that has prompted this monogram.

The approach integrates the structure and controller design processes thereby providing extra opportunities for avoiding some of the disastrous effects of control-structures interaction and for discovering new, unexpected avenues of future structural design. A control formulation based on Boyd's implementation of Youla parameterization is employed. Control design parameters are coupled with structural design variables to produce a set of integrated-design variables which are selected through optimization-based methodology. A performance index reflecting spacecraft mission goals and constraints is formulated and optimized with respect to the integrated design variables. Initial studies have been concerned with achieving mission requirements with a lighter, more flexible space structure. Details of the formulation of the integrated-design approach are presented and results are given from a study involving the integrated redesign of a flexible geostationary platform. Hunziker, K. Book excerpt: This report investigates the integrated control/structure design optimization problem for large flexible structures subject to stochastic disturbance forces. The full state feedback control of truss type structures is considered. The problem is formulated as a mathematical programming problem, and solved using a sequential approximations solution technique along with a scaling procedure. Due to the special nature of full state feedback control, it is shown that the controller can be assumed to be an LQR controller, where the control and state weightings are Lagrange multipliers from the mathematical programming optimality conditions. The design space is therefore effectively reduced to the truss element cross-sectional areas and these Lagrange multipliers, significantly reducing the computational effort required for solution. In this report, the solution algorithm is applied to the DRAPER I tetrahedral truss structure. Keywords: Large space structures; Multivariable control; Control structure interaction.
