Book Lost Opportunities

Download or read book Lost Opportunities written by S. P. Sinha (Brigadier.) and published by Lancer Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast India has been beset with insurgencies for more than fifty years. The Nagas rebelled in the early 1950s, and since then, insurgency in some form or the other has spread to all the states of the northeast, popularly known as the Seven Sisters. This book takes a critical look at the many insurgencies in this strategic region and reviews their genesis, motivations, and characteristics. Why have these persisted despite interventions by the state and civil society? Over the years, the insurgencies have developed external linkages, which have only complicated matters. The book also critically examines the government's response and traces the development of counter-insurgency strategies, from finding a military solution to winning the hearts and minds of the populace. It is a fascinating but sad story of missed opportunities.

Book Insurgent Crossfire

Download or read book Insurgent Crossfire written by Subir Bhaumik and published by Lancer Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the British withdrew from the subcontinent, nations in the region have been at war with each other. But instead of fighting long-drawnout wars like that between Iran and Iraq, nations of South Asia have sponsored guerrilla armies and armed, trained and equipped them to harass, bleed or embarrass their rivals. The four wars in the region’s post-colonial era were also born out of sponsored guerrilla wars. In 1948 and 1965, Pakistan first tried to have its way in Kashmir by sponsoring irregulars on a large scale and then followed it up with unsuccessful military campaigns aimed at ensuring the state’s secession from India. In 1962, China attacked India not so much over a disputed border or India’s much publicized Forward Policy but essentially in response to what it felt was a joint Indo-US covert effort in Tibet. In 1971 India rounded off its successful sponsorship of the Bengali guerrilla struggle in erstwhile East Pakistan by a speedy military campaign that resulted in the break up of Pakistan. Insurgent Crossfire examines the origins of sponsored insurgencies and how they have shaped South Asia’s tense diplomatic environment. Having done that, it studies the major sponsored guerrilla campaigns in South Asia and then seeks a detailed case study of the phenomenon by focusing on the far eastern slice of the subcontinent. The author argues that this region, with its multitude of tribes and battling ethnicities, has been the most durable theatre of insurgent crossfire – in which nations like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (a major actor in South Asian politics) have backed insurgencies against each other.

The subcontinent houses about one-fifth of the world's population and its inhabitants are divided into various tribes, clans and ethnic groups following four great religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. Framing the debate using case studies from across the region as well as China, Afghanistan and Burma and using a wealth of primary and secondary sources this incisive volume takes a closer look at the organization and doctrines of the 'shadow armies' and the government forces which fight the former. Arranged in a thematic manner, each chapter critically asks; Why stateless marginal groups rebel? How do states attempt to suppress them? What are the consequences in the aftermath of the conflict especially in relation to conflict resolution and peace building? Book But I Am One of You

Download or read book But I Am One of You written by Samrat Choudhury and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2024-08-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas of who belongs and who does not, who is an insider and who is an outsider have sparked severe friction in Northeast India for decades now. From the frequent characterization of Bengal-origin Muslims in Assam as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants to the ethnic battles between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo tribals of Manipur, from the Naga and Mizo separatist insurgencies to the prejudice the tribal minorities face in the mainland--negotiating identity has always been a complex issue. In recent years the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship Amendment Act have added to that complexity. Amidst sweeping political and social changes in the Northeast and the rest of the country, have things changed for the 'Northeasterner'? How do the tribals and the old settlers find a way to coexist in the region? This anthology addresses these pressing questions by bringing together a variety of voices from different communities across the Northeast. Each essay offers a unique perspective, reflecting the distinctive micro-history of diverse groups and the multiplicity of stories within every state. Timely and perceptive, But I Am One of You sheds light on the complex fabric of identity in Northeast India.

Book A Military History of India since 1972

Download or read book A Military History of India since 1972 written by Arjun Subramaniam and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Military History of India since 1972 is a definitive work of military history that gives the Indian military its rightful place as a key contributor to Indian democracy. Arjun Subramaniam offers an engaging narrative that combines superb storytelling with the academic rigor of deep research and analysis. It is a comprehensive account of India’s resolute, responsible, and restrained use of force as an instrument of statecraft and how the military has played an essential role in securing the country’s democratic tradition along with its rise as an economic and demographic power. This book is also about how the Indian nation-state and its armed forces have coped with the changing contours of modern conflict in the decades since 1972. These include the 2016 “surgical” or cross-border strikes by the Indian Army’s Special Forces across the line of control with Pakistan, the face-off with the Chinese at Doklam in 2017 and in Ladakh in 2020, the preemptive punitive strikes by the Indian Air Force against terrorist camps in Pakistan in 2019, and the large-scale aerial engagement between the Indian Air Force and the Pakistan Air Force the following day. These conflicts also include the long-running insurgencies in the northeast, terrorism and proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir, separatist violence in Punjab, and the Indian Peacekeeping Force’s intervention in Sri Lanka. The author also includes a chapter on the development of India’s nuclear capabilities. Arjun Subramaniam enlivens the narrative with a practitioner’s insights amplified by interviews and conversations with almost a hundred serving and retired officers, including former chiefs from all three armed forces, for an in-depth exploration of land, air, and naval operations. The structure of the book offers readers a choice of either embarking on a comprehensive and chronological examination of war and conflict in contemporary India or a selective reading based on specific time lines or campaigns.

Book Countering Insurgencies in India

Download or read book Countering Insurgencies in India written by E M Rammohun and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has discussed six insurgencies that have taken roots in India from its inception. He has gone into the details of its causes and spread as relevant to various insurgencies in different parts of India. The author has supported most of the reasons of its spread with his personal experience, having served in various capacities in these affected areas. Many scholars have written about the causes that lead to insurgencies all over the world, lessons learnt by them and remedial measures adopted by them. Regrettably, the author feels we did not learn any lessons from these. Our oldest insurgency of the Nagas in Nagaland and the Manipur Hills is still festering though ten years of a ceasefire has led to no conclusions. In Kashmir it is the Centre that triggered off the insurgency that Pakistan had failed to initiate on several occasions from 1947 to 1989. Good governance has never been achieved in any of these insurgent states with the sole exception of Tripura. We are in the throes of a Maoist Communist led insurgency in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and part of Maharashtra. All this has been discussed in the book in detail.

Book Terrorism In India S North East A Gathering Storm

Download or read book Terrorism In India S North East A Gathering Storm written by Col Ved Prakash and published by . This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 1059 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study of terrorism in India s North-East is the result of the author s personal experience of combating terrorism in the Naga hills and the Mizo Hills during his extended tenures in the area, followed by long years of secondary research after his retirement. It is to be noted that the terrorism in the North-East is of older vintage as compared to its counterpart in Jammu and Kashmir. Not only the present situation/terrorism and counter terrorism in each of the Seven states popularly known Seven Sisters has been discussed but their historical perspective too has been gone into in detail. Ironically, the insurgency-terrorism in the North-East can be linked to India s Independence. In the first flush of glow of the Freedom, every tribe got conscious of their identity and wanted to vigorously preserve it. Most of the tribes wanted a place in the sun through secessionist, or the very least, autonomy movements, which became violent in the course of time. Dealing with the terrorism in the North-East is not an easy proposition, given its diversity (ethnic, racial, religious and linguistic), size, history and geography. If India is a microcosmic world, the North-East is microcosmic India. Of the 5, 653 communities in India, 653 are tribal of which 213 are indigenous to the North-East. Democratic India has shown maximum possible accommodation to tribal communities. But it has not been easy dealing with them. Even issues settled decades back threaten to come unstuck. Two apt examples will do. After long and sustained struggle, the Khasis and Garos got Meghalaya, a state of their own and now the Garos want Garoland to be carved out of this small state. Again, the smaller tribes in Mizoram want a Union Territory (UT) of their own within that State. It is no secret that a UT is but penultimate stage on way to demand for a full-fledged state of the Union. All this shows the problems of dealing with terrorism in the North-East. All these have been comprehensively covered in the book. Being the first of its kind, given its wide-ranging contents and sheer size, it is a unique, multi-volume book to hit the market.
