Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inside View of the Formation of the State of West Virginia: With Character Sketches of the Pioneers in That Movement The severance of West Virginia from the mother State was a tragic event in the history of our Civil War. Virginia was the oldest and proudest State in the Union. Her soil was sacred soil. It had been the theater of many of the historic events in the childhood of our Republic, from the settlement at Jamestown to the surrender at Yorktown. It had furnished the explorers Of our new-country, the warriors to win its independ ence, the statesmen to build its government, it was the Mother of Presidents. Its population were a peculiar people. They gloried in the prestige of their State. There was more State pride in Virginia than in any of the States. Every man was proud to call himself a Virginian and trace his ancestry to the First Families. It was strange, therefore, that a division of this sacred soil should have been one of the incidents of the war. It was strange, too, that it should be the only division accomplished in a war for division, and that it should be brought about by the party opposed to division as against the party fight ing to divide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a quantitative approach, Allan G. Bogue assesses the nature of radical and conservative Republicanism in the Civil War Senate, documents the distinctions among the senators, and clarifies the factors that encouraged or discouraged factionalism. The Earnest Men is divided into two parts: "Men, Context, and Patterns" and "The Substance of Disagreement." In Part One, Bogue investigates the backgrounds of the senators and the institutional structure of the Senate, and he examines the character of leadership exercised in the Senate chamber. He then uses roll-call analysis as a means of establishing distinctions between radical and moderate senators. To account for their voting patterns, he considers living arrangements, seating, regionalism, and election results. In Part Two, Bogue looks closely at the debates in the Senate in order to ascertain the nature of disagreements between radical and moderate Republicans in such policy-making areas as slavery, taxation, human rights, punishment and rehabilitation, and legislation affecting the border states. Taking issue with the idea that the Republicans were essentially unified on the issues of the day, he finds that their differences were widespread and important. A major study of the Senate in one of its most productive periods, The Earnest Men is a remarkable combination of systematic analysis and narrative history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “thoroughly researched [and] historically enlightening” account of how the Commonwealth of Virginia split in two in the midst of war (Civil War News). “West Virginia was the child of the storm.” —Mountaineer historian and Civil War veteran Maj. Theodore F. Lang As the Civil War raged, the northwestern third of the Commonwealth of Virginia finally broke away in 1863 to form the Union’s 35th state. Seceding from Secession chronicles those events in an unprecedented study of the social, legal, military, and political factors that converged to bring about the birth of West Virginia. President Abraham Lincoln, an astute lawyer in his own right, played a critical role in birthing the new state. The constitutionality of the mechanism by which the new state would be created concerned the president, and he polled every member of his cabinet before signing the bill. Seceding from Secession includes a detailed discussion of the 1871 U.S. Supreme Court decision Virginia v. West Virginia, in which former Lincoln cabinet member Salmon Chase presided as chief justice over the court that decided the constitutionality of the momentous event. Grounded in a wide variety of sources and including a foreword by Frank J. Williams, former Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and Chairman Emeritus of the Lincoln Forum, this book is indispensable for anyone interested in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wise (1806-76) was extremely active on the Virginia and national political scene from the early 1830s to the mid-1860s, drawing popular support because of his projection of hopefulness and energy. Regarded as eccentric, Wise is given, in this study, an interpretation that finds consistency in his life-long controversial and impulsive behavior. Simpson stresses Wise's ambivalent attitude toward slaves and slave-holding, authority and authority figures, and Virginia and the United States.
