Book excerpt: Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, was a profound Torah scholar who served as the rabbi of the Ukrainian city of Yekaterinoslav (now Dnepropetrovsk). He is said to have composed thousands of pages of original Torah thoughts and discourses. The bulk of these writings are considered lost during the tumultuous years of WWII, and extant today are only those he penned on the margins of the few books he had during his final years, while in exile in Chi'ili, in far-off Kazakhstan. More than a decade after R. Levi Yitzchak's passing in Alma-Ata in 1944, these writings were brought to the United States, where they reached his illustrious son, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. In the 1970s, they were published in five volumes under the titles of Likkutei Levi Yitzchak and Torat Levi Yitzchak, and the Rebbe began regularly expounding on these terse glosses at his public addresses.Comprising sixteen essays, the present work was adapted by Rabbi Eli Block from R. Levi Yitzchak's original works as well as from the Rebbe's elucidations.

The study of consciousness has advanced rapidly over the last two decades. And yet there is no clear path to creating models for a direct science of human experience or for integrating its insights with those of neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy. In Inner Experience and Neuroscience, Donald Price and James Barrell show how a science of human experience can be developed through a strategy that integrates experiential paradigms with methods from the natural sciences. They argue that the accuracy and results of both psychology and neuroscience would benefit from an experiential perspective and methods. Price and Barrell describe phenomenologically based methods for scientific research on human experience, as well as their philosophical underpinnings, and relate these to empirical results associated with such phenomena as pain and suffering, emotions, and volition. They argue that the methods of psychophysics are critical for integrating experiential and natural sciences, describe how qualitative and quantitative methods can be merged, and then apply this approach to the phenomena of pain, placebo responses, and background states of consciousness. In the course of their argument, they draw on empirical results that include qualitative studies, quantitative studies, and neuroimaging studies. Finally, they propose that the integration of experiential and natural science can extend efforts to understand such difficult issues as free will and complex negative emotions including jealousy and greed.

It begins with the new observation that there are two independent properties at play in English inner aspect: the object-to-event mapping and event structure. From a discussion of English statives and Russian, it is concluded that the former property is variant and the latter universal; a minimalist conception of language variation arises naturally in this context. Additionally, an exploration of a lexical derivational approach to achievements leads to the expectation that there are no accomplishments in the lexicon. A detailed look at idioms suggests that this expectation is met. These results support the division of labor between an operative lexicon and narrow syntax in aspectual composition; this naturally poses a problem for (neo-)constructional approaches to inner aspect. Finally, one conclusion reached about the syntactic nature of inner aspect regards the object-to-event mapping: it is a purely syntactic phenomenon.
