Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Decline of Life in Health and Disease: Being an Attempt to Investigate the Causes of Longevity; And the Best Means of Attaining a Healthful Old Age The celebrated Heberden remarked, that the life of a physician should be like that of a vestal virgin, which was divided into three periods; in the first of which she learned her profession, in the second she practised it, and in the third she, also, taught it to others. I have certainly passed through the first and second of these periods: after several years employed in the study of my profession, I have spent thirty-five years in the practice of it, and, anxious to fulfil completely my vocation, I desire before I quit the stage to strike one blow for the good cause, to do something, however slight, to improve the sanatory condition of mankind, to alleviate pain, and oppose the influence of disease. I cannot hope, strictly speaking, "to teach my profession to others." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Practical Treatise on the Diseases and Infirmities of Advanced Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Practical Treatise on the Diseases and Infirmities of Advanced Life Classic Reprint written by Daniel MacLachlan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases and Infirmities of Advanced Life The much admired essay of Sir Henry Halford, the late Presi dent of the College of Physicians, On Climacteric Decay, first published in the fourth volume of the Medical Transactions of the College; the chapter On the Medical Treatment of Old Age, by Sir Henry Holland, in his volume of Medical Notes and Reflections and the admirable articles on Age by Dr Roget, in the Cyclopredia of Practical Medicine by Dr Symonds, in the Cycloptedia of Anatomy and Physiology and by Dr Copland, in his Dictionary of Practical Medicine, are worthy of the most attentive perusal. The latter writer has in various portions of that great work done more to illustrate the subject of senile diseases than any other British author. It is much to be regretted that Dr Day, whose learning, application, and ability eminently qualify him for the task, has not bestowed on it more timc and attention. His work is little more than an outline from which many important and interesting diseases incident to the aged are entirely excluded, while all are but very briefly considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Health and Long Life, 1818 As temperance in our mode of living, for the purposes of promoting health, is of the greatest importance, we have, in the First Part of the present work, containing Annals of Health, laid down rules for a proper regimen, by following which many have recovered from dangerous disorders, and prolonged their lives to extreme old age: in fact, by intemperance the seeds of dissolution are quickly sown, and the foolish vices of gluttony and inebriation hasten the decease of many who might otherwise continue an ornament to society for many years. Book On the Treatment of Pleurisy

Download or read book On the Treatment of Pleurisy written by John W. Corson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Treatment of Pleurisy: With an Appendix of Cases, Showing the Value of Combinations of Croton Oil, Ether, and Iodine, as Counter-Irritants in Other Diseases Careful statistics from great charities have helped to fix the real value of many remedies. When life is at stake we dare not lightly risk new things. In pre senting any fancied improvements before so many accomplished physicians, it is but just, frankly to give the facts and figures on which they are based. Let us gladly appeal to numbers. From the report of Dr. Aigner of his European tour, it appears that, doubt less from our vast emigration, the dispensaries of New York are the largest in the world.* The writer pro poses to discuss the general treatment of pleurisy, and the use of croton-oil and the tincture of iodine as substitutes for fly-blisters, in this lowly field. His ex perience was mainly during several years of service as physician to the class Of Diseases of the Chest and Throat, in the New York and Eastern Dispensaries. These investigations were commenced more than twenty years since. They were principally in the first of the above institutions, which was the most vener able and extensive. Many here will remember a quaint, Old brick building that then stood on the site of the present elegant edifice in Centre street, near the Five Points. See Annual Report of the New York Dispensary for 1863. St. Bartholomew's and other hospitals in London have very large Out Door Departments but the regular dispensaries of European cities are much smaller than ours. Provost (Pro Tempore), The Trustees and Medical Professors of the University of Pennsylvania, on the Twenty-First Day of April, 1806, for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine Cold has been very generally considered as a sedative. But a few years ago, and an attempt to support a contrary Opinion, would in Europe have exposed a candidate for medical honours, if not to persecution, at least to censure, and great warmth Of opposition, for daring to Offer violence to the ortho doxy Of the schools. But thanks to the general freedom of inquiry, allowed in our happy country, thanks more particularly to the candor and libera lity of the enlightened professors, no such bigotry of Opinion, no such tyranny of conduct, have ever thrown a shade over the lustre of the medical school of Philadelphia. Here the candidate for the honours of his profession, 'nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri, is left free to follow the footsteps Of truth, or of what he conceives to be truth, wherever she may choose to lead the way. Under this permission Ishall take the liberty Of stating a'few facts and considerations, which have induced me to relin quish the commonly received Opinion, and to con sider Cold as a stimulant. I allude here, though not exclusively, yet more particularly to the sensation of cold, and that in relation to the human system. Book An Inaugural Dissertation on Lumbar Abscess

Download or read book An Inaugural Dissertation on Lumbar Abscess written by William Barrow and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inaugural Dissertation on Lumbar Abscess: Submitted to the Public Examination of the Faculty of Physic Under the Authority of the Trustees of Columbia College, in the State of New York, the Right Rev. Benjamin Moore, D. D. President; For the Degree of Doctor of Physic, on the 15th Day November, 1 Among the many diseases to which mankind are subject, there are, perhaps, few that have proved more fatal in their termination than that of which we are about to speak. Every innovation in practice that may tend to palliate the sufferings, or prolong the life of a fellow creature, may be deemed an object of some importance. From the observations which I have been able to make upon diseases, my mind has uniformly been impressed with the necessity of paying more strict attention to the state of the solids of the system than is ordinarily done; for upon them depends the state of the fluids. I shall lay it down as a general position, that diseases are produced by the action of foreign agents applied directly or indirectly to some part of the system capable of being brought into motion, thereby producing an excitement greater than natural, or by the abstraction of those agents upon whose influence the natural actions depend. Dr. Cullen, in his First Lines, vol. i. sect. 43, says, that a diminished action of vital parts constitutes atony. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infectious diseases are a global hazard that puts every nation and every person at risk. The recent SARS outbreak is a prime example. Knowing neither geographic nor political borders, often arriving silently and lethally, microbial pathogens constitute a grave threat to the health of humans. Indeed, a majority of countries recently identified the spread of infectious disease as the greatest global problem they confront. Throughout history, humans have struggled to control both the causes and consequences of infectious diseases and we will continue to do so into the foreseeable future. Following up on a high-profile 1992 report from the Institute of Medicine, Microbial Threats to Health examines the current state of knowledge and policy pertaining to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases from around the globe. It examines the spectrum of microbial threats, factors in disease emergence, and the ultimate capacity of the United States to meet the challenges posed by microbial threats to human health. From the impact of war or technology on disease emergence to the development of enhanced disease surveillance and vaccine strategies, Microbial Threats to Health contains valuable information for researchers, students, health care providers, policymakers, public health officials. and the interested public.
