Book excerpt: An intensive on scene study of crashes on rural roads outside of towns was carried out from June 1986 to July 1987 in an area of roughly 100 kilometres radius around Adelaide, SA. A total of 80 crashes were investigated. This was a 14% sample of the 577 calls to crashes. Fifty-six crashes involved loss of directional control. The loss of directional control was due to various combinations of driver, vehicle and environmental factors. The drivers and riders involved in the crashes were predominantly young, (less than 30 years), male, unmarried, in a blue collar occupation, with a limited secondary school education. Almost half of male drivers were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. About 15% of drivers and riders had a BAC over the limit of 0.08 g/100 ml. Compared with urban crashes these crashes resulted in more frequent and more severe injury. Recommendations were made regarding measures to increase seat belt wearing rates, and to increase random breath testing in rural areas.Rural areas. BAC. Road design. Human factor. Successful studies were found to have defined and explicit objectives, a sound statistical design, appropriate analysis, and a substantial report which was related to the objectives of the study. On scene studies gather transient information, and allow development of insight into the crash process; follow up studies are more convenient, but at the cost of lost information. The resources required for each are similar. Apart from a small rural study near Adelaide, there has been no field study of crash performance of vehicles in Australia since 1977. There is a need for a system for continual monitoring of the effects of changes in vehicles and the environment on injuries and the crash process. Book excerpt: Despite improvements in road safety, young drivers continue to be over-represented in crashes. CASR has conducted three in-depth studies investigating rural and metropolitan crashes in South Australia over the last decade. In-depth investigation of crashes provides very detailed information on crashes that otherwise could not be obtained from aggregate police-reported crash data. To gain a better understanding of the specific factors that lead to young driver crash involvement, this study used the comprehensive information collected from in-depth crash investigation to examine the causes and contributing factors leading to young driver crashes. Analyses by age group and level of experience were undertaken to determine whether the incidence of specific driver errors varied over the first few years of driving and could account for the substantial decline in crashes during that time. The study also examined specific driver errors and contributing factors associated with young driver risk-taking behaviour and with those who made simple mistakes or errors that lead to crash involvement. Detailed information for 256 drivers aged between 16 and 24 years was examined to identify behaviours contributing to young driver crash involvement. Based on findings from the analysis, measures that might reduce the incidence and severity of young driver crashes are discussed within a safe system framework.

Book excerpt: Crashes involving pedal cyclists in South Australia have steadily increased over the past ten years. In 2001 pedal cycle crashes constituted around 12% of all traffic crashes resulting in hospital admission, increasing to 17.4% in 2010 (SA Heath and SA Police unpublished data sources). There have been several suggestions why the increase has occurred including a renewed interest in cycling and an increased awareness of the health and environmental benefits. In response to the demonstrated increase in crashes there is a need to identify those contributing factors that may place this vulnerable road user group at increased risk. This project explores the circumstances surrounding crash involvement for a group of 61 bicycle riders involved in a collision with a motorised vehicle who were admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital over the period between January 1 2008 and December 31 2010. Data collected and matched during the study included medical records data generated during hospitalisation, police data related to the crash and Forensic Science data related to mandatory testing for alcohol and drugs. This data was combined with information gathered during voluntary participation in interviews with the cyclists involved following informed consent.
