Book An Important Matter of Principle

Download or read book An Important Matter of Principle written by David Seawright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book examines the dramatic decline of the Conservative Party in Scotland. In 1955 the party secured over 50 per cent of the Scottish vote. At the last election it won a mere 17 per cent of the vote, losing its representation at Westminster in the process. But, until the publication of this work and despite its importance, relatively little was known about why the Conservative Party had declined so precipitously in Scotland. Many of the explanations for the party’s decline had largely remained untested. These included that the party had lost its Protestant base, suffered for its opposition to devolution and become too right wing for a normally progressive Scottish electorate. Using a unique collection of survey data, this work casts doubt on all three claims. Thus, this book makes a major academic contribution and examines, what for the Scottish Unionists, was An Important Matter of Principle.

Book A Matter of Principle

Download or read book A Matter of Principle written by Conrad Black and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1993, Conrad Black was the proprietor of London's Daily Telegraph and the head of one of the world's largest newspaper groups. In 2004, however, he was accused of fraud and fired as chairman of Hollinger. In A Matter of Principle, Black describes his indictment, four-month trial, partial conviction, imprisonment and largely successful appeal. Black writes without reserve about the prosecutors who mounted a campaign to destroy him and the journalists who presumed he was guilty. Fascinating people fill these pages, from prime ministers and presidents to the social, legal and media elite. Woven throughout are Black's views on big themes: politics, corporate governance and the US justice system. He is candid about highly personal subjects, including his friendships, his faith and his marriage to Barbara Amiel. Above all, Black maintains his innocence and recounts what he describes as the 'fight of and for my life'. A Matter of Principle is a riveting memoir and a scathing account of a flawed justice system.

Book A Matter of Principle

Download or read book A Matter of Principle written by Thomas Cushman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-07-11 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current debate over the motives, ideological justifications, and outcomes of the war with Iraq have been strident and polarizing. A Matter of Principle is the first volume gathering critical voices from around the world to offer an alternative perspective on the prevailing pro-war and anti-war positions. The contribu-tors—political figures, public intellectuals, scholars, church leaders, and activists—represent the most powerful views of liberal internationalism. Offering alternative positions that challenge the status quo of both the left and the right, these essays claim that, in spite of the inconsistent justifications provided by the United States and its allies and the conflict-ridden process of social reconstruction, the war in Iraq has been morally justifiable on the grounds that Saddam Hussein was a brutal tyrant, a flagrant violator of human rights, a force of global instability and terror, and a threat to world peace. The authors discuss the limitations of the current system of global governance, which tolerates gross violations of human rights and which has failed to prevent genocide in places such as Bosnia and Rwanda. They also underscore the need for reform in international institutions and international law. At the same time, these essays do not necessarily attempt to apologize for the mistakes, errors, and deceptions in the way the Bush administration has handled the war. Disputing the idea that the only true liberal position on the war is to be against it, this volume charts an invaluable third course, a path determined by a strong liberal commitment to human rights, solidarity with the oppressed, and a firm stand against fascism, totalitarianism, and tyranny.

Book Matters of Principle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard S. Markovits
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 1998-07-01
  • ISBN : 0814763154
  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book Matters of Principle written by Richard S. Markovits and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1998-07-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is generally believed to be a liberal, rights-based culture. In such a society, according to Richard S. Markovits, arguments of moral principle dominate legal discourse. Markovits analyzes various rights related to our society's basic duties of showing appropriate, equal respect for all creatures capable of moral integrity and appropriate, equal concern for their actualizing this potential. By taking moral- and legal-rights arguments seriously, the book counters the tendencies of legal academics to substitute non-right-focused policy analysis for rights analysis and of judges to indulge their own political preferences under the guide of executing arcane, morally-disconnected "legal analysis." Ranging widely and covering in depth such flashpoint issues as educational rights, minimum real-income rights, privacy rights, abortion, parenting, sexual liberties, and the right to die, Matters of Principle is a deeply engaged and thoughtful work, certain to be controversial and much debated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Class-tested and thoughtfully designed for student engagement, Principles of Organic Chemistry provides the tools and foundations needed by students in a short course or one-semester class on the subject. Rather, it focuses on the underlying principles in order to make accessible the science that underpins so much of our day-to-day lives, as well as present further study and practice in medical and scientific fields. This book provides context and structure for learning the fundamental principles of organic chemistry, enabling the reader to proceed from simple to complex examples in a systematic and logical way. Utilizing clear and consistently colored figures, Principles of Organic Chemistry begins by exploring the step-by-step processes (or mechanisms) by which reactions occur to create molecular structures. It then describes some of the many ways these reactions make new compounds, examined by functional groups and corresponding common reaction mechanisms. Throughout, this book includes biochemical and pharmaceutical examples with varying degrees of difficulty, with worked answers and without, as well as advanced topics in later chapters for optional coverage. Incorporates valuable and engaging applications of the content to biological and industrial uses Includes a wealth of useful figures and problems to support reader comprehension and study Provides a high quality chapter on stereochemistry as well as advanced topics such as synthetic polymers and spectroscopy for class customization

Book The Principle of Effective Legal Protection in Administrative Law

Download or read book The Principle of Effective Legal Protection in Administrative Law written by Zoltán Szente and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents a comparative analysis of the principle of effective legal protection in administrative law in Europe. It examines how European states consider and enforce the related requirements in their domestic administrative law. The book is divided into three parts: the first comprises a theoretical introductory chapter along with perspectives from International and European Law; part two presents 15 individual country reports on the principle of effective legal protection in mostly EU member states. The core function of the reports is to provide an analysis of the domestic instruments and procedures. Adopting a contextual approach, they consider the historical, political and legal circumstances as well as analysing the relevant case law of the domestic courts; the third part provides a comparative analysis of the country reports. The final chapter assesses the influence and relevance of EU law and the ECHR. The book thus identifies the most important trends and makes a valuable contribution to the debate around convergence and divergence in European national administrative systems.
