Badger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated History of the Flute, and Sketch of the Successive Improvements Made in the Flute, and a Statement of the Principles Upon Which Flutes Are Constructed: With a Description of the New or Boehm Flute This Flute has two great defects; it is out of tune some of its notes being too flat, and some too sharp and it varies in quality of tone - some of its notes being free and clear, and others feeble and muffled. The two prin cipal causes of these defects are, the unequal distribu tion of the holes, some being above and others below their correct position, and the existence of closed or shut keys. That these are the causes of the imperfections of this instrument will be demonstrated by a very brief ex amination of the principles upon which the fingered wind instruments are, or obviously should be, constructed. Book A History of Orchestral Conducting

Download or read book A History of Orchestral Conducting written by Elliott W. Galkin and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the bibliography of literature about personalities in the conducting world is extensive, a comprehensive, scholarly study of the history of conducting has been sorely lacking. Georg Schünemann's respected study, published in 1913, was brief and restricted to the procedures of time-beating. No work has attempted to examine the role of the orchestral conductor and to document the evolution of his art from historical, technical, and aesthetic perspectives. Dr. Elliott W. Galkin, musicologist, conductor, and critic-twice winner of the Deems Taylor award for distinguished writing about music-has produced such a work in A History of Orchestral Conducting. The central historical section of the book, which examines chronologically the theories and functions of time-beating and interpretative concepts of performance, is preceded by discussions of rhythm, development of the orchestral medium, and the evolving characteristics of orchestration. Conductors of unusual pivotal influence are examined in depth, as is the increasingly complex psychology of the podium. Critical writings since the time of Monteverdi and the birth of the orchestra are surveyed and compared. Analyses of conducting as an art and craft by musicians from Berlioz to Bernstein and commentators from Mattheson, Bernard Shaw, and Thomas Mann to Jacques Barzun, are described and discussed. A fascinating collection of engravings, wood cuts, photographs and caricatures contributes to the richness of this work.

Contributed articles include “An Easy Guide to Checking Your Flute Tuning and Scale” by Trevor Wye; “Flute Clutches” by David Shorey; "Early Music on Modern Flute” by Barthold Kuijken; and “Crowns and Stoppers” and “Boehm Flute Scales from 1847 to the Present:The Short Story” by Gary Lewis. Maclagan’s A Dictionary for the Modern Flutist, second edition is an essential reference volume for flutists of all levels and for libraries supporting student, professional, and amateur musicians.

Book Musical Instrument Makers of New York

Download or read book Musical Instrument Makers of New York written by Nancy Groce and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of any skilled urban trade is ultimately tied to the growth and development of the city in which it is located. From its humble eighteenth-century beginnings, instrument making grew to be one of New York City's most sizable and important trades. By the 1840s, the city was the largest producer of instruments in the Western Hemisphere, and, in the decades that followed, designs and innovations pioneered by New York artisans influenced and inspired instrument makers throughout the world. Although many of the these instruments survive in American museums, there existed no comprehensive guide to their makers. Nancy Groce's biographical dictionary chronicles all of these master craftsmen in colorful detail, from the obscure work of Geoffry Stafford in 1691, to the zenith of the 1890s, and on to the Great Depression of the 1930s.
