Book excerpt: Born in 1812, Henriette DeLille Sarpy was from one of the oldest and affluent racially mixed Catholic Creole families in nineteenth-century New Orleans. Her great-great-grandmother was an African slave brought to Louisiana who subsequently won her freedom. Her great-grandmother, grandmother and mother also had children by white men so Henriette, her mother, and her brother could "pass for white." A French missionary nun taught Henriette and her friend Juliette Gaudin. The girls prayed, fed the poor, and taught the Catechism of the Catholic Church to free children of color. In 1836, when Henriette was 24, she received the sacrament of confirmation and underwent a religious experience. Henriette wrote in her prayer book, "I believe in God. I hope in God. I love. I want to live and die for God." Despite being able to "pass for white" and being from an affluent family, Henriette chose to help Creole women of color. Soon after her religious experience, Henriette and Juliette founded a confraternity of pious Creole women. Henriette was chosen as their first leader and from then she was known as Mother DeLille. The confraternity received formal recognition from the Vatican the following year, becoming a congregation. In 1842 they changed their name to the Sisters of the Holy Family. The sisters cared for the sick, helped the poor, and taught the Catechism to slave and free women and girls. They later added an orphanage and boarding school. Mother DeLille died in 1862 and was declared Venerable in 2010. An Hour With Mother Henriette DeLille creates a time of reflection, recollection, learning, contemplation, and prayer. In addition to a short biography, it includes meditations on her spirituality. Sr. M. Sylvia Thibodeaux, SSF, and Ms. Virginia Gould also contributed to this pamphlet. Sister Thibodeaux received her BA from Seton Hill University and her M.A. from Antioch Graduate School. She has been a religious sister of the Congregation of the of the Sisters of the Holy Family for more than 60 years. This story of their little-known missionary efforts in Belize from 1898 to 2008 builds upon their already distinguished work, through the Archdiocese of New Orleans, of teaching slaves and free people of color, caring for orphans and the elderly, and tending to the poor and needy. Utilizing previously unpublished archival documents along with extensive personal correspondence and interviews, Edward T. Brett has produced a fascinating account of the 110-year mission of the Sisters of the Holy Family to the Garifuna people of Belize. Brett discusses the foundation and growth of the struggling order in New Orleans up to the sisters' decision in 1898 to accept a teaching commitment in the Stann Creek District of what was then British Honduras. The early history of the British Honduras mission concentrates especially on Mother Austin Jones, the superior responsible for expanding the order's work into the mission field. In examining the Belizean mission from the eve of the Second Vatican Council through the post–Vatican II years, Brett sensitively chronicles the sisters' efforts to conform to the spirit of the council and describes the creative innovations that the Holy Family community introduced into the Belizean educational system. In the final chapter he looks at the congregation's efforts to sustain its missionary work in the face of the shortage of new religious vocations. Brett’s study is more than just a chronicle of the Holy Family Sisters' accomplishments in Belize. He treats the issues of racism and gender discrimination that the African American congregation encountered both within the church and in society, demonstrating how the sisters survived and even thrived by learning how to skillfully negotiate with the white, dominant power structure.

Book excerpt: The names Marie Laveaux and Henriette Delille have become synonymous with Vodou and Catholic charity respectively in scholarship. Laveaux and Delille were born femmes de couleur libres, or free women of color, a social class that enabled them to overcome barriers that limited black women activism in nineteenth-century New Orleans. These women were quadroons or octoroons who were expected to engage in placage unions with wealthy, white European men, which had been a matrilineal custom for generations. However, Laveaux and Delille chose a life of service to others rather than a life of privilege. This book explores how Laveaux and Delille used their faith-based practices to address the needs of the city’s poor, enslaved, and disenfranchised populations. It provides readers with an interest in cultural studies, religious and spiritual studies, and gender studies with an introduction to Laveaux and Delille as black women activists in nineteenth-century New Orleans.
