Book excerpt: In the summer of 1870, a seventeen-year-old crofter's son turned his back on his apprenticeship with the Royal Clan and Tartan Warehouse in Inverness and signed up as a private in Queen Victoria's army. He joined the Gordons - the 92nd Highlanders - whose reputation was second to none as the fearsome cutting-edge of the British Army. Posted to India, Afghanistan, South Africa and the Sudan, he became a formidable soldier, rising up through the ranks to become the glorified and much-decorated Major-General Sir Hector Macdonald or, more commonly, 'Fighting Mac', the true hero of Omdurman. Then, in 1903, at the peak of his remarkable career, he was accused of homosexuality. Ordered to face court martial and unable to bear the disgrace, he ended his life. From this true story, with a poet's insight and precision, Iain Crichton Smith has crafted an exquisite novel: a tale of honour and elitism, equivocation and hierocracy, victory and despair.

Book War Discourse in Four Paradoxes the Case of Thomas Scott 1602 and the Digges 1604

Download or read book War Discourse in Four Paradoxes the Case of Thomas Scott 1602 and the Digges 1604 written by Fabio Ciambella and published by Skenè. Texts and Studies. This book was released on 2022-12-09 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1602 and 1604 two collections of paradoxes, both entitled Four Paradoxes, authored by Thomas Scott, and Thomas and Dudley Digges, respectively, were published. Scott, a Protestant preacher, wrote four poems about art, law, war, and service. On the other hand, the diplomat and intellectual Dudley Digges published his father’s two paradoxes about the art of war together with his own two texts concerning the worthiness of war and warriors. What do these two collections of paradoxes have in common, and why publishing their critical edition together? Apparently, besides sharing the same title, the two works do not seem to have anything else in common. Nevertheless, this modern spelling critical edition of both texts aims at demonstrating that they share political, cultural, and genre-related features connected with the circulation of paradoxical discourse about war in early modern England.

Book Turmoil Trauma and Tenacity in Early Jewish Literature

Download or read book Turmoil Trauma and Tenacity in Early Jewish Literature written by Nicholas P. L. Allen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is written in the context of trauma hermeneutics of ancient Jewish communities and their tenacity in the face of adversity (i.e. as recorded in the MT, LXX, Pseudepigrapha, the Deuterocanonical books and even Cognate literature. In this regard, its thirteen chapters, are concerned with the most recent outputs of trauma studies. They are written by a selection of leading scholars, associated to some degree with the Hungaro-South African Study Group. Here, trauma is employed as a useful hermeneutical lens, not only for interpreting biblical texts and the contexts in which they were originally produced and functioned but also for providing a useful frame of reference. As a consequence, these various research outputs, each in their own way, confirm that an historical and theological appreciation of these early accounts and interpretations of collective trauma and its implications, (perceived or otherwise), is critical for understanding the essential substance of Jewish cultural identity. As such, these essays are ideal for scholars in the fields of Biblical Studies—particularly those interested in the Pseudepigrapha, the Deuterocanonical books and Cognate literature.

Book Tehiyyat Ha Metim

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harry Sysling
  • Publisher : Mohr Siebeck
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9783161465833
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Tehiyyat Ha Metim written by Harry Sysling and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 1996 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The study deals with all those passages in the Palestinian Targums, the Aramaic translations of the Pentateuch, that refer to the Resurrection of the Dead. Of central interest in it is the question to what extent the targumic traditions on a future resurrection of the body or on the fate of the soul after death agree with or differ from corresponding traditions in rabbinic sources." "With a few exceptions, the relation between targumic traditions and rabbinic sources has been neglected in targumic studies of the last decades." "This may have been caused by the questionable assumptions that (a) the Aramaic of the Palestinian Targums represents the spoken Aramaic of Palestine in the New Testament period, (b) the Palestinian Targums contain an important number of early pre-Christian traditions, and (c) the Palestinian Targums are popular in origin, being written in the vernacular, in contrast with the scholastic, authoritative expositions in the learned rabbinic sources." "Harry Sysling first offers a survey of these and other important issues in targumic research of the past and of recent opinions on character, origin and interrelationship of the Palestinian Targums. In the following chapters, the author makes a careful analysis of those passages in the Palestinian Targums that directly by the use of specific terminology, or indirectly by the use of metaphors, refer to the resurrection of the body and to the fate of the body and/or soul after death."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Encyclopedia of Death and Dying

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Death and Dying written by Glennys Howarth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a massive upsurge in academic, professional and lay interest in mortality. This is reflected in academic and professional literature, in the popular media and in the proliferation of professional roles and training courses associated with aspects of death and dying. Until now the majority of reference material on death and dying has been designed for particular disciplinary audiences and has addressed only specific academic or professional concerns. There has been an urgent need for an authoritative but accessible reference work reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the field. This Encyclopedia answers that need. The Encyclopedia of Death and Dying consolidates and contextualizes the disparate research that has been carried out to date. The phenomena of death and dying and its related concepts are explored and explained in depth, from the approaches of varied disciplines and related professions in the arts, social sciences, humanities, medicine and the sciences. In addition to scholars and students in the field-from anthropologists and sociologists to art and social historians - the Encyclopedia will be of interest to other professionals and practitioners whose work brings them into contact with dying, dead and bereaved people. It will be welcomed as the definitive death and dying reference source, and an essential tool for teaching, research and independent study.
