Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Address at the Semi-Centennial of the Second Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, January 12, 1883 Presbyteriancommunities; and that the documents themselves should be deposited in some suitable, permanent place for safe keeping. The manuscript was left by the author just as it had been prepared for public delivery, much of it in the form of notes, and She had gone over it, indicating in a general way what modi fications or omissions might be made; and had the final prepara tion for the printer been in her hands She would doubtless have exercised, to a greater degree than has seemed allowable to an other, the privilege that belonged to him Of making any modifi cations of style and statement of the spoken address in giving it permanent published form. In regard to the documents, which had always been freely accessible, Since they had come into his possession, to any desiring fuller information, recognizing a community of interest, of the membership of both congregations in Carlisle, in the associations connected with those that antedate the division in 1833, she proposed, in accordance with what she had reason to believe was the wish of her father, to place them in the safe keeping of the Presbyterian Historical Society of Phil adelphia, in the fire-proof vault provided for such deposits, where they would be secure, and accessible, as well, to any specially in terested in them. E have, accordingly, been carefully mounted and arrange preservation and reference, and placed as a permanent deposit with that Society. It was her purpose, also, to have a complete set of reduced photographic facsimiles made, direct from the negatives, of all the more important doc uments, as a memorandum, in many respects almost equal for reference to the originals in authenticity. This part of her plan has also been carried out, and duplicates of these photographic facsimiles, from thirty negatives, have been bound in with copies of the address, and placed in the Hamilton Library, Carlisle, Pa., and in the library of the Presbyterian Historical Society of Phila delphia. Book Centennial Address Delivered at Trenton N Y

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Address Delivered at Trenton, N. Y: July 4, 1876 Dear Sir - In behalf of the ladies of Trenton, who invited you to give the Centennial Address on the Fourth of July, we respectfully request that you will grant us the pleasure of having this address in a more permanent form; believing as we do, that its facts and incidents and reflections are worthy of perpetual preservation among the people of Trenton. Gentlemen - Pursuant to your request, I send you my Centennial Address. You will find with it and as a part of it, a letter from John Adams, under date of March 4th, 1804, and a letter from Hibernicus, under date of 1820, and also some incidents additional to those given on the 4th of July. Appended to the address is a copy of Judge Van der Kemp's narrative, under date of 1792, of his journey on horseback from Kingston to Albany, and thence up the Mohawk Valley to Fort Stanwix, and by canoe and batteau through Oneida Lake to Lake Ontario. This narrative is in the form of letters to Col. Mappa, and it is to the first of these letters that DeWitt Clinton refers when he writes "Your letter to Col. Mappa, on the canal, written in 1792, is really a curiosity. It gives you the original invention of the Erie route, and I shall lay it by as a subject of momentous reference on some future occasion." The other letters in this narrative will be found still more interesting, and from them we learn that the romance of the "Frenchman's Island" in Oneida Lake is not a myth, as is generally supposed, but a reality, which Judge Van der Kemp describes with something of the charm of Paul and Virginia. Although the size of this appendix makes my address seem like a mere "rill of matter," yet I consider Judge Van der Kemp's narrative of so much greater interest, that I would rather omit the address than the appendix. C., 1803-1903 The exact date for the Centennial celebration of New York Avenue Presbyterian Church would be May 13, 1903. The Session, in deciding upon such celebration, thought it wise to defer it until some convenient date in the autumn, to be determined by the committee Of arrangements. This committee was appointed to consist of the elders, deacons, and trustees, with power to add to their number. They decided that the celebration should begin on Sabbath, November fifteenth, and continue on the evenings of the three succeeding days. Because of the age of the church, and its historical and ecclesiastical importance, and the unusual programme announced, the occasion wakened a wide spread interest, not only in this community but through out the country, and received unusual notice from the Associated Press and from the daily and weekly papers. The church was in part quickened in preparation for the occasion by a series of Sunday evening historical studies upon Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Knox, Edwards, and Witherspoon. The church was appropriately decorated. The chan cel was beautiful with palms and ferns and owers. In the north and south arches blazed in electric lights 1803 The large middle arch was festooned with the American ag. On the south space, between the chancel and the gallery, was the Banner of the Covenant, made of blue Silk, bearing a St. Andrew's cross and the words in the four Spaces, Christ. The story of his life cannot be told in the brief space of a passmg hour. The lightning flight of thought itself, could not glance at all that memory - would de light to recal, and the glowmg colors of poetry and eloquence would be required to finish the portrait; but these are not mine, and you must be content with a hasty, unadorned reference to a few of the incidents of his eventful life, and plain suggestions of the instruc tion to be drawn from his actions and his death: and these made, not in the spirit of idolatry for a fellow man, but with profound gratitude to Heaven, which created such an agent for human good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of the Centennial Anniversary: Of the First Presbyterian Church, Augusta, Georgia It is sought herein to preserve in a worthy form the proceedings of that memorable occasion; to garner up the wisdom of many minds and the fruitage of rich and manifold experiences; to tell of the things which we have heard and know and which our fathers have told us. So much of the church's history as could be gathered is herein presented; able addresses on Education, Home and Foreign Missions are made record of; place is given the exercises of the Sabbath school on Centennial Sabbath, and under various and proper headings are set forth several phases of the centennial occasion itself, and also the activities by which we have sought to glorify God. The admirable sermon of Rev. Dr. G. B. Strickler on The Distinctive Doctrines of the Presbyterian Church is reluctantly omitted in the volume because the distinguished author says, I am anxious to pre sent, some time in the future, our distinctive doctrines in a popular form that will commend them to some who now are prejudiced against them. We shall anticipate this intended work from Dr. Strickler with confidence in its great polemical value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
