CHAPTER XXXVI THE BATTLE OF SANDEPU The Russian position in the third week of January this year presented a very long front. On the east it extended for many miles along the Sha-ho, so as to protect Fushun from flank attack. Going west it followed practically the river as far as the railway, which cut the centre of the Russian lines. A little west of the railway, at Lin-shin-pu, the Sha-ho, which is a small stream, takes a decided bend south-west, eventually joining the Tai-tze-ho. Leaving the Sha-ho at this bend the Russian lines struck across country to the Hun-ho, the large affluent of the Liao-ho, which after passing Mukden flows south and west. Crossing the Hun-ho the Russians had a position at Zifonti, their outposts extending north and west to the Liao-ho at Sinminting. Thus the Russian lines were in the shape of a bow, with Mukden behind and equidistant from the two ends. On the right or western flank were Mischenko and Kosagovsky with their cavalry. Between them and the railway was Grippenberg's Second Manchurian Army, with its headquarters at Zifonti; Kaulbars held the centre, and Linievitch the east. From Linievitch's or the First Manchurian Army the well-tried 1st Siberian Army Corps under Baron Stackelberg had been sent to strengthen Grippenberg's army, which consisted largely of European corps. At this period the force under General Kuropatkin's command was some 400,000 strong, and had about 2000 guns. All stores had been amply replenished, and the branch railway lines from Mukden to the Sha-ho were finished. In short, the Russian preparations for battle were complete, and the only deterrent to fighting was the hard weather. On the other hand, the position of the Japanese was extremely strong. They held no fewer than three...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Eye-Witness in Manchuria A few words by way of preface may possibly save the readers from misconception regarding the scope and nature of the following narrative. In the first place, I would say that the book is in no wise concerned either with the causes or with the possible consequences of the war between the empires of Russia and Japan. In it, so far as was possible, political questions of every kind have been left untouched. I have made no attempt to write a complete history of this great and as yet unfinished war, being of opinion that the time for any such attempt to be made, with any reasonable hope of success, is still distant. What I have endeavoured to set forth here is a simple record of personal experience gained during nine months spent with the Russian Army in Manchuria. Having followed and studied the campaign as a soldier, I have striven to give here a straightforward account of the many stirring events which came within my own actual experience; this without extenuation or disguise, and, assuredly, without malice. Book excerpt: This study, closely researched by Philip Towle over the past thirty years, is principally concerned with the military relations between Britain and Japan during the first half of the twentieth century and the ambivalence, misunderstandings and misconceptions that informed their relationship, described by the author as ‘an epic tragedy’. Following the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902, Japan was held up as a model in Britain and Britain in Japan. But within a generation, the British came to see Japan as the first country to challenge the League of Nations and to begin a new age of imperialism. Conversely, the Japanese armed forces saw Britain as the greatest obstacle to Japanese ambitions in China and elsewhere. In 1936, Lieutenant Commander Tota Ishimaru’s book Japan Must Fight Britain was printed in Britain, its significance ignored at many levels, and five years later the two countries were at war. ‘The feelings stirred up by that conflict,’ notes Towle, ‘still have resonance today.’ From Ally to Enemy brings together a most important body of research that is long overdue in book form and will be widely welcomed by historians and researchers of the period, as well as those seeking more detailed analysis of specific aspects of the pre-war Anglo-Japanese military relationship.

Book Ancient History of the Manchuria

Download or read book Ancient History of the Manchuria written by Lee Mosol, MD, MPH and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is literally a new voice from the eastern end of the great wall, and an eye opening essay written by a retired physician, who has deep root in the Confucian culture. Interpretation of the ancient Chinese scriptures to modern languages had been tarnished by the Chinese Imperial court, and Confucian culture. Later historian used, and moved on to the next steps without any critical thinking. With this premises, Mosol starts to explore many issues around the Eastern End of the Great wall. He tackled all the disputed issues from the origin and analyzed in depth. The eye witnessed story about the major war conducted by Emperor Wu is the starting point of his essay. Many disputed subjects were discussed, and introduced. It is a "fresh look in academic sense" for others scholars. To get his message through to the others, he inserted lots of Chinese ideograms in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in the seventeenth century, Northeast Asian politics hung in a delicate balance among the Chosŏn dynasty in Korea, the Ming in China, and the Manchu. When a Chosŏn faction realigned Korea with the Ming, the Manchu attacked in 1627 and again a decade later, shattering the Chosŏn-Ming alliance and forcing Korea to support the newly founded Qing dynasty. The Korean scholar-official Na Man’gap (1592–1642) recorded the second Manchu invasion in his Diary of 1636, the only first-person account chronicling the dramatic Korean resistance to the attack. Partly composed as a narrative of quotidian events during the siege of Namhan Mountain Fortress, where Na sought refuge with the king and other officials, the diary recounts Korean opposition to Manchu and Mongol forces and the eventual surrender. Na describes military campaigns along the northern and western regions of the country, the capture of the royal family, and the Manchu treatment of prisoners, offering insights into debates about Confucian loyalty and the conduct of women that took place in the war’s aftermath. His work sheds light on such issues as Confucian statecraft, military decision making, and ethnic interpretations of identity in the seventeenth century. Translated from literary Chinese into English for the first time, the diary illuminates a traumatic moment for early modern Korean politics and society. George Kallander’s critical introduction and extensive annotations place The Diary of 1636 in its historical, political, and military context, highlighting the importance of this text for students and scholars of Chinese and East Asian as well as Korean history.

Book excerpt: General Arthur MacArthur’s extraordinary life spans the history of the United States from the Civil War through the Indian Wars to the Spanish-American War and the heyday of American imperialism in the Philippines. And in a sense, as the father of Douglas MacArthur, his influence extends well into our own century. The General’s General is the first biography of Arthur MacArthur, and it clearly establishes his importance in American history. Arthur MacArthur’s military career began as a scrawny seventeen-year-old lieutenant, his commission owed not to any evidence of his ability but to family connections. His squeaky voice, barely audible on the parade field, combined with an adolescent conception of proper military bearing to make the young officer an object of ridicule. But MacArthur overcame this bad start and went on to become a bona fide Civil War hero. The youngest regimental commander of the war, he led his troops with distinction in battle and became one of the very first officers to be awarded the congressional Medal of Honor. In the 1870s MacArthur served in forts in the West during the Indian Wars, married “Pinky†Hardy, and started a family. He next commanded a division in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. MacArthur went on to become the governor-general of the Philippines—the most imperial post in that blatantly imperialistic period of American history. His blunt opposition to aspects of Washington’s colonial policy in the Philippines led to a series of conflicts with Taft, McKinley, and other civilian authorities. After his return to the United States in 1907, these same leaders blocked MacArthur’s appointment as chief of staff of the army. Instead, an embittered MacArthur was forced to retire. The MacArthur family, including Douglas, never forgave the powerful men who had thwarted Arthur in his greatest ambition and denied him his place in history. After one of the most distinguished careers in the history of the U.S. Army, Arthur MacArthur died in relative obscurity while delivering a speech at the fiftieth reunion of his original Civil War regiment. A man whose whole life had been soldiering left instructions forbidding a military funeral and asking to be buried in civilian clothes rather than in the uniform he had worn so proudly from the age of seventeen. MacArthur died too soon to witness the military exploits of his famous son. But there can be no doubt that Arthur made a profound impression on Douglas, who regarded the general with awe and spent much of his own life following in his father’s footsteps. Arthur MacArthur had spent his life striving to be a soldier’s soldier; in the end it can be truly said that he was the general’s general.
