Book A Commentary on St Paul s Second Epistle to the Thessalonians Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Commentary on St Paul s Second Epistle to the Thessalonians Classic Reprint written by Alfred Plummer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Second Epistle to the Thessalonians Under its modern name of Salonika, Thessalonica, owing to the great war, has become far more widely known than it was previously. Thousands of persons who had hitherto scarcely heard of such a place, and certainly had very vague ideas as to its geographical position, now know accurately where to find it in the map and are aware of its importance with regard to its principal surroundings. But beyond this fact of its having become a very important city, both from a military and from a political point of view, we are in no better position for understanding the condition of the place at the time when a portion of its inhabitants were a community of the deepest interest to St. Paul and multitudes of other Christians. Nor are we likely to be in a better position for so doing when the war is over. On the contrary, we shall probably find that some of the features which a few years ago were not so very different from what they may have been in his day have been either entirely obliterated or very seriously transformed and disfigured. It is true that the war has added rather considerably to our knowledge of the archaeology of the immediate neighbourhood. Some of those who have been obliged through recent events to take up their abode there for a time have used this opportunity for making explorations in the interests of antiquarian research; and their labours have had considerable results. We are now learning a good deal more about the early history of this interesting tract of country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, Galatians, Romans, Vol. 2 of 2: With Critical Notes and Dissertations The interest that attaches to the origin of that great ecclesiastical dominion which was to cover the world, though connected by little more than a name with the earlier Greek community which is the subject of our investigation, and the yet stronger interest in gathering up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost, respecting the great Epistle of the Gentile Apostle, will justify our lingering awhile around the probabilities and points of view which have been suggested by commentators. No pains can be too great to illustrate even the least words that bear upon the history of the Apostolical age. Small as the result may be, yet the inquiry will be fruitful. Nor need we be afraid of multiplying uncertainties. The light of theory seems to be needed to make us observe facts. The opinions of almost all have probably contributed something to the increasing clearness and distinctness with which we are able to determine the limits of our knowledge on this subject. Download or read book The Epistles of St Paul to the Thessalonians Galatians and Romans written by Benjamin Jowett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, Galatians and Romans: Essays and Dissertations It is a strange, though familiar facts, that great differences of opinion exist respecting the Interpretation of Scripture. All Christians receive the Old and New Testament as sacred writings, but they are not agreed about the meaning which they attribute to them. The book itself remains as at the first; the commentators seem rather to reflect the changing atmosphere of the world or of the Church. Different individuals or bodies of Christians have a different point of view, to which their interpretation is narrowed or made to conform. It is assumed, as natural and necessary, that the same words will present one idea to the mind of the Protestant, another to the Roman Catholic; one meaning to the German, another to the English interpreter. The Ultramontane or Anglican divine is not supposed to be impartial in his treatment of passages which afford an apparent foundation for the doctrine of purgatory or the primacy of St. Peter on the one hand, or the three orders of clergy and the divine origin of episcopacy on the other.
