Book excerpt: The current study examines indicators in 13 public elementary schools throughout the state of Delaware by using a mixed methods exploratory research design, in an effort to understand the dynamic relationship between school climate and the social, behavioral, and intellectual outcomes of 5 th grade students. Research indicators are consistently categorized and discussed in terms of the study's 4 dependent variables: student safety, student risk behavior, general school characteristics, and academic performance; and the study's 2 independent variables: dimensions of school climate and approaches to discipline. Findings suggest that within the sample population, more favorable school climate schools had low student to teacher ratios, favorable school climates as perceived by students, favorable student perceptions of peer relationships, and more favorable rates of student perceptions of school rule fairness and school safety. Statistically significant, direct correlations were observed between student responses to the statement "I feel safe in my school" and perceptions of rule fairness, students' liking of school, and student relationships. Further, unexpected positive correlations between gambling and student relations as well as between gambling and teacher/staff perceptions of school climate were observed. Positive, statistically significant correlations were observed between teacher education levels and students' perceptions of school climate, students' reports of liking school, students' perceptions of school safety, students' perceptions of student-teacher-home relations, teachers'/school staffs' perceptions of school climate, and homes' perceptions of school climate. The need to reveal the intricacies of establishing a constructive school climate and nurturing positive student outcomes remains. Once specifications of this interaction are better understood, policy initiatives can be enacted to better develop healthy environments in all schools. The greatest contributions of the study include a refined approach to understanding relationships between school climate and student outcomes, as well as to highlight the need for better approaches to collecting school climate data.

Book excerpt: As the call for reducing school suspensions and academic achievement improvement moves across the country, schools are responsible for implementing discipline restructure and academic growth programs. In various research studies, positive student and school behavior outcomes have been associated with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) since its implementation in schools in the late 1990s. However, additional research in understanding the impact of PBIS practices on reported school suspension, school climate perceptions, and student academic achievement (i.e., standardized test scores) would be useful. This study could potentially contribute to the literature and fill a gap not yet explored on the relationship between PBIS implementation and discipline practices impacting African American students, school climate perceptions, and student achievement. School officials can utilize this study's findings to determine their dedication and commitment to PBIS as a behavior intervention within school systems. Utilizing data collected from a large urban school district in Ohio, this study will examine the association between PBIS implementation, the suspension rate of all students, individual student achievement, and school climate perceptions while emphasizing PBIS' impact on African American students. The research data in this study will focus on grade levels elementary through high school. The data will be analyzed using linear regressions. Limitations of this study will be discussed.

If school climate is left to fail, adolescents are at a risk for developing mental health problems, anxiety, antisocial behaviors, and depression (Shortt, Alison, & Spence, 2006). Unless discipline issues are at a minimum, instruction will be interrupted and teaching time will be lost (McIntosh, Bohanon & Goodman, 2011).^ The following research questions are a few of the questions that guided this study: 1. What are the students' perceptions of school climate at the end of the school 2014 year? 2. What are the differences in the number of Office Disciplinary Reports (ODRs) from pre-implementation of the SWPBS in 2009 to post-implementation of the SWPBS in 2014 by grade level and gender? ^ This study employed a causal-comparative research design utilizing ex post facto data collected from ODRs and a School Climate Survey to determine feasibility and worthiness of a School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS). The students in this study (N=487) were from a small suburban middle school located in the Northeast.^ Analyses of students' perceptions of school climate were negative in the following three dimensions: Order and Discipline=41%, Student-Interpersonal Relations=49% and Student-Teacher Relations =78%.
