Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of student-led conferences on math and science achievement for seventh grade students. An ANCOVA and phenomenological methods were used to explore the relationship between the following variables: student-led conferences, gender and usage of student-led conferences, and student and parent perceptions of student-led conferences. Findings of this study revealed student-led conferences do not effect seventh-grade math achievement; however, there was a statistically significant effect on seventh-grade science achievement. Additionally, students revealed they were prepared for their conference and parents believed this conference would better assist them with their child's learning.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to investigate the influence of Student-led Parent Teacher Conferences on parental perception of student academic progress, parental knowledge of school structures, parental self-efficacy to support student academic progress, and the family-school relationship. Widely used family engagement models often have little impact on parent knowledge of school structures and student academics, parent self-efficacy, and the family-school relationship. The data collected from this study indicated an effect on knowledge and parental self-efficacy to support students and the family-school relationship. The findings from this informed school districts and schools of the implications of student-led conferences in order to bolster parental support and family-school partnership.

Parent-teacher conferences are a time for relationships to be built and to establish direct one-on-one communication. This study looks into teachers’ and parents’ feelings and perceptions of parent-teacher conferences in a rural school setting. The results show that there are similar feelings between both parties and suggests areas where improvements can be made. Future research could continue to examine the feelings and perceptions of parents and teachers in other areas, as well as examine the effects any improvements could have on parent-teacher conferences.
