Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exploration of Exmoor and the Hill Country of West Somerset: With Notes on Its Archaeology So far as can be ascertained, no attempt has yet been made to describe in anything like detail the hill country of West Somerset. Now and again a book, generally a small one, has been given to the world, just sufficient to call the attention of the lover of scenery to the beautiful spots that exist between the Devonshire borders and the undulating line of Quantock; but that no volume treating of the whole district between Lynton and Cothelstone has made its appearance seems certain. It has, therefore, occurred to me that an account of a region every day becoming better known may not be altogether unwelcome. As in a former work, for whose favourable reception I thank both critics and public, I have endeavoured to make my remarks on matters archaeological in as popular a form as is consistent with what I fear many think a very dry subject. Archaeologists themselves, however, may be of opinion that they have cause for complaint in that there is not enough of that antiquarian leaven in which their souls take such delight.
