Book An Experimental Investigation of Combustion Pressure Oscillations in Bypass Configured Solid Fuel Ramjets

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Combustion Pressure Oscillations in Bypass Configured Solid Fuel Ramjets written by D. C. Rigterink and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the mechanisms involved in combustion pressure oscillations in bypass flow configured solid fuel ramjets was conducted. Testing was done using cylindrically perforated polymethylmethacrylate fuel grains in solid fuel ramjet with 180 deg opposed dumps into a plenum ahead of an axial dump combustor inlet. Bypass flow into the aft mixing chamber was accomplished using two dumps located either 180 deg or 90 deg apart, perpendicular to the centerline. Split inlet feed line lengths into the plenum were varied with no apparent change of the dominant pressure oscillation frequency of approximately 167 Hz for bypass tests. Hot wire measurements indicated that in the short-coupled axial inlet, there were no dominant vortex shedding frequencies in the separation/shear layer or at the reattachment point on the fuel grain wall. The observed pressure oscillation frequency did not appear to be related to vortex shedding from the inlet jet. Coupling of the driving disturbance from bypass flow could possibly be with a longitudinal mode of the combustor or a Helmholtz mode involving the head section plenum. (Author).

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Combustion Pressure Oscillations in Solid Fuel Ramjets written by Ted Michael Parafiorito and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the mechanisms involved in combustion pressure oscillations in solid fuel ramjets was conducted. Dynamic pressure measurements of the combustion chamber and air inlet were recorded, while a series of tests using Plexiglas as a fuel were performed. Combustion chamber geometric changes were systematically made in order to help isolate the causal mechanisms. The air inlet system resonant frequency coupling with reattachment zone flow was found to be the major source of pressure oscillations while bypass air injection was the major source of disturbance to the upstream reattachment region of flow. The combustion efficiency of a vitiated air heater was also evaluated using a gas chromatograph to measure unburned fuel in the exhaust. Negligible unburned gaseous fuel existed for all fuel-air ratios and temperatures. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Combustion Behavior of Solid Fuel Ramjets

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Combustion Behavior of Solid Fuel Ramjets written by Grant Allan Begley (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited experimental data indicated that fuel vapor composition within the SFRJ combustor may have a significant effect on the obtainable combustion efficiency and upon the dependence of combustion efficiency upon equivalence ratio and air mass flow rate. Combustor pressure oscillations in bypass operation were found to increase regression rates when using PMM fuel grains and to increase or decrease combustion efficiency depending upon equivalence ratio.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book Effect of Configuration Variables on Performance of Solid Fuel Ramjets

Download or read book Effect of Configuration Variables on Performance of Solid Fuel Ramjets written by Clemens James Mady (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation into the effect of configuration variables on combustion performance in the solid fuel ramjet was conducted. The effect of air ducting methods on combustion efficiency was found to be dependent not only on the flow rates, momentum and geometry of the system but also on the composition of the solid fuel. High pressures and low air mass fluxes through the fuel grain affect the regression rate by altering the heat transfer mechanism. Some air duct configurations were found to create a favorable environment for combustion pressure oscillations. (Author).

Book A Comparison of Solid Fuel Ramjet Flow Characteristics and Combustion Behavior

Download or read book A Comparison of Solid Fuel Ramjet Flow Characteristics and Combustion Behavior written by Brian Andrew Binn and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine if there is a relationship between the cold flow characteristics of velocity, pressure distribution, and turbulence intensity and the reacting flow performance and combustion characteristics of a solid fuel ramjet. The effects of configuration and air flow changes on the above characteristics were examined. Average regression rates and combustion efficiencies were not significantly affected by changes in configuration. These variations in test conditions significantly affected the center-line turbulence intensity but not the near-wall turbulence intensity in cold flow. The use of bypass resulted in decreases in regression rate and efficiencies for all cases. Attainable performance appears to be most strongly related to near-wall turbulence intensity/mixing and to the amount of fuel reaching the aft mixing chamber. (Author).

Book An Investigation of the Combustion Process in Solid Fuel Ramjets

Download or read book An Investigation of the Combustion Process in Solid Fuel Ramjets written by William Vernon Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted into four areas of the solid fuel ramjet combustion process: (1) the effects of near-wall turbulent mixing and equivalence ratio on combustion efficiency, (2) the effects of bypass air on combustion efficiency, (3) the combustion process in a cylindrically perforated fuel grain with a twin side-dump/dome configuration, and (4) the comparison of experimental radial temperature profiles to computer generated radial profiles. Polymethylmethacrylate fuel grains were burned in a ramjet motor and a thrust stand. Combustion efficiencies were determined and compared for different configurations. It was found to be insensitive to variations in the mixture ratio and to near-wall mixing. Bypass air was found to adversely affect the combustion efficiency both in stable and unstable combustion environments. The twin side-dump/dome configuration was unable to sustain combustion for all conditions investigated. Theoretical radial temperature profiles were found to have larger near wall gradients than were measured experimentally. (Author).

Download or read book An Investigation of the Combustion Behavior of Solid Fuel Ramjets written by Clemens James Mady (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and analytical investigation was conducted of the combustion behavior in solid fuel ramjets. The effects of configuration variables on combustion performance were experimentally determined. Air ducting methods were found to affect combustion efficiency through port flow rates, bypass dump momentum and geometry and bypass ratio. Bypass configurations with plexiglas fuel altered the heat transfer mechanisms within the port and decreased combustion efficiency. The analytical model was found to be in qualitative agreement with experimental data. Finite rate kinetics and radiative transfer to the fuel surface will be required in the model to obtain more quantitative accuracy. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of Combustion Modulation Techniques for a Solid Fuel Ramjet

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Combustion Modulation Techniques for a Solid Fuel Ramjet written by Stephen R. Lowe and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the effects of inlet air swirl and secondary gas injection on the combustion properties in a solid fuel ramjet. Tests were conducted with both HTPB and PMM fuels in order to obtain general results. The swirl tests were conducted at high and low air mass fluxes with equivalence ratios less than unity. Swirl was found effective for increasing the fuel regression rate but the magnitude was highly dependent upon motor geometry, fuel type and operating environment. The gas injection tests included hydrogen at low equivalence ratios, and nitric oxide and nitrous oxide at high equivalence ratios. Secondary injection generally resulted in increases in combustion pressure in agreement with equilibrium, adiabatic combustion expectations. Keywords: HTPB(Hydroxyl Terminated Polybutadiene); PMM(Polymethyl Methacrylate); Swirl; and Regression rate. (Theses).
