Book Stuttering Meets Sterotype Stigma and Discrimination

Download or read book Stuttering Meets Sterotype Stigma and Discrimination written by Kenneth O. St. Louis and published by Wvu Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a century of research has sought to identify the causes of stuttering, describe its nature, and enhance its clinical treatment. By contrast, studies directly focused upon public and professional attitudes toward stuttering began in the 1970s. Recent work has taken this research to new levels, including the development of standard attitude measures; addressing the widely reported phenomena of teasing, bullying, and discrimination against people who stutter; and attempting to change public opinion toward stuttering to more accepting and sensitive levels. Stuttering Meets Stereotype, Stigma, and Discrimination: An Overview of Attitude Research is the only reference work to date devoted entirely to the topic of stuttering attitudes. It features comprehensive review chapters by St. Louis, Boyle and Blood, Gabel, Langevin, and Abdalla; an annotated bibliography by Hughes; and experimental studies by other seasoned and new researchers. The book leads the reader through a maze of research efforts, emerging with a clear understanding of the important issues involved and ideas of where to go next. Importantly, the evidence base for stuttering attitude research extends beyond research in this fluency disorder to such areas as mental illness, obesity, and race. Thus, although of interest primarily to those who work, interact, or otherwise deal with stuttering, the book has potential for increasing understanding, ameliorating negative attitudes, and informing research on any of a host of other stigmatized conditions.

Book Current Issues in Stuttering Research and Practice

Download or read book Current Issues in Stuttering Research and Practice written by Nan Bernstein Ratner and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This state-of-the art volume is a follow-up to the 1999 publication, Stuttering Research and Practice: Bridging the Gap, edited by Nan Ratner and E. Charles Healey. Like its predecessor, the current book is an edited collection of the presentations from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Annual Leadership Conference in Fluency and Fluency Disorders. Among the topics covered are evidence-based practice, impact of the self-help and support groups, meta-analyses of selected assessment and intervention programs, current theories of stuttering, and the predicted path of stuttering intervention in the future. The authoritative representation of contributors offers the reader the most up to date presentation of fluency issues, with a special emphasis placed on the practical clinical implications of fluency assessment, treatment, and evolving theories of the disorder. The book is written for fluency specialists and graduate students in programs of fluency disorders. It will also be valuable for the clinicians who wish to upgrade their skills in treating fluency disorders.

Book Stuttering in Children and Adults

Download or read book Stuttering in Children and Adults written by Ralph R. Leutenegger and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuttering in Children and Adults was first published in 1955. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. One of the largest groups of handicapped people in the world today is made up of the estimated fifteen million persons who stutter. Their predicament has been one of man's most baffling problems ever since it was first recorded by the ancients, but not until the present century has the mystery of stuttering showed any signs of lifting. The studies collected in this volume represent a substantial step toward the solving of the mystery. The University of Iowa, a pioneer in research on the causes and treatment of stuttering, has carried on its work for many years. This book presents all previously unpublished papers and dissertations (a total of forty-three) that have resulted from this research program. Much of the work centers on the onset of stuttering in children and underlies the theory that stuttering begins with the hearer rather than the speaker. Interrelationships between personality and stuttering have been investigated, a search has been made for a possible physical basis for stuttering, conditions affecting severity of stuttering have been studied, and research on therapy has been attempted. This is an important book for psychologists, educators, social workers, physicians, parents, and others concerned with speech disorders. For those who devote their full effort to the problems discussedthe specialists in speech pathology and therapythe book is essential.

Book Cross cultural Investigation of Children s Awareness and Perception of Stuttering

Download or read book Cross cultural Investigation of Children s Awareness and Perception of Stuttering written by Maya Inez Gamez and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuttering is a universal phenomenon that has been identified in ethnic and cultural groups around the world. While it has been suggested that attitudes toward stuttering are different for various cultural groups, knowledge of, and attitudes toward stuttering have not been studied extensively across cultures. The purpose of the present study was twofold: (1) to investigate the awareness and perception of stuttering for American children age 3 to 7 from diverse cultures, and (2) to compare those to findings of awareness and perception of stuttering for children from Israel and America. Sixteen children in four different age groups were asked to complete three different types of experimental tasks after watching a video of fluent and disfluent identical seal puppets. The participant's awareness of disfluency was assessed through discrimination between fluent and disfluent speech and identification of the puppet who spoke like them. Perception was addressed through labeling and evaluation of fluent and disfluent speech. Results revealed that at as young as age 3 some children began to demonstrate accurate awareness of disfluent speech. However, the highest level of accuracy was not demonstrated in the majority of participants until age 7. In addition, results further revealed across all age groups that children were more accurate when discriminating between fluent and disfluent speech than identifying it. Similarities and differences between previous studies that have used the same experimental stimuli (i.e., Ambrose [and] Yairi, 1994; Ezrati-Vinacour et al., 2001) are discussed. The lack of diverse cultural participants and its resulting effects on the present study's recruitment methodologies are also discussed.
