Download or read book Convection in Porous Media written by D.A. Nield and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we have tried to provide a user-friendly introduction to the topic of convection in porous media. We have assumed that the reader is conversant with the basic elements of fluid mechanics and heat transfer, but otherwise the book is self-contained. Only routine classical mathematics is employed. We hope that the book will be useful both as a review (for reference) and as a tutorial work (suitable as a textbook in a graduate course or seminar). This book brings into perspective the voluminous research that has been performed during the last two decades. The field has recently exploded because of worldwide concern with issues such as energy self-sufficiency and pollution of the environment. Areas of application include the insulation of buildings and equipment, energy storage and recovery, geothermal reservoirs, nuclear waste disposal, chemical reactor engineering, and the storage of heat-generating materials such as grain and coal. Geophysical applications range from the flow of groundwater around hot intrusions to the stability of snow against avalanches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A user-friendly introduction to convection in porous media, such as fibrous insulation, geological strata, and catalytic reactors. This is a self-contained presentation, requiring only routine classical mathematics and the basic elements of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. It will thus be of use not only to researchers and practising engineers as a review and reference, but also to graduates and others just entering the field. Applications discussed include such disparate topics as building insulation, energy storage, nuclear-waste disposal, coal and grain storage, chemical reactor engineering, groundwater flow, and stability of snow to avalanches. In this second edition the authors have added: discussions of compact heat exchangers and of tree networks; new material on external natural convection; descriptions of the effects of magnetic fields, of rotations, and of periodic heating; discussions of inclined gradients and of the solidification of alloys; and an extensive treatment of two-phase flows. An extensive list of references -- emphasising recent experimental work -- provides access to the current research literature.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Experimental Study on Heat Transfer in Porous Media

Download or read book Experimental Study on Heat Transfer in Porous Media written by Dr. Beant Singh and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is specially designed for postgraduate candidates and research scholars. We have assumed that the reader is conversant with the basic elements of fluid mechanics and heat transfer, but otherwise the book is self-contained. The book describes temperature variation, heat energy exchange, and fluid movement in porous media with the help of experimentation. The experiment is carried with different spherical balls, and water is used as fluid. The materials used as a porous media have different thermodynamic properties. The amount of heat energy exchange and thermal nonequilibrium is analyzed. The heat energy exchange is compared for different materials.

Book Natural Convection Experiments in a Liquid saturated Porous Medium Bounded by Vertical Coaxial Cylinders

Download or read book Natural Convection Experiments in a Liquid saturated Porous Medium Bounded by Vertical Coaxial Cylinders written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental effort is presently underway to investigate natural convection phenomena in liquid-saturated porous media utilizing a geometry, and hydrodynamic/thermal boundary conditions, relevant to the problem of nuclear-waste isolation in geologic repositories. During the first phase of this research program, detailed measurements were made of the steady-state thermal field throughout an annular test region bounded by a vertical, constant-heat-flux, inner cylinder and a concentrically-placed, constant-temperature, outer cylinder. An overlying, constant-pressure, fluid layer was utilized to supply a permeable upper surface boundary condition. Results showed the heater surface temperature to increase with increasing vertical distance due to the presence of a buoyantly-driven upflow. The measured temperature difference (.delta.T) between the average heater surface temperature and the constant, outer-surface, temperature was found to be progressively below the straight-line/conduction-only solution for .delta.T vs power input as the latter was systematically increased. Comparisons between measured results and numerical predictions generated with the finite-element code MARIAH showed very good agreement, thereby contributing to the qualification of this code for repository-design applications.

Book An Experimental Study of Natural Convection in Air Between a Vertical Isothermal Flat Plate and a Parallel Insulted Flat Plate

Download or read book An Experimental Study of Natural Convection in Air Between a Vertical Isothermal Flat Plate and a Parallel Insulted Flat Plate written by Soon Mo Lee and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The free convective heat transfer phenomena in air between two vertical plates 24 by 38 inches spaced 15.895 mm apart, was investigated in this experimental study. One plate was isothermal and, the other adiabatic. A quartz fiber anomometer was used for measuring local velocities in the air between the vertical plates. A very fine iron-constantan thermocouple was used for local temperature measurements. Velocity and temperature profiles were obtained at several vertical positions along the plates. With the data obtained, local and mean convective heat transfer coefficients were determined at each vertical position.

Book An Experimental Study of Natural Convection in Air Between a Vertical Isothermal Flat Plate and a Parallel Insulated Flat Plate

Download or read book An Experimental Study of Natural Convection in Air Between a Vertical Isothermal Flat Plate and a Parallel Insulated Flat Plate written by Sung Soo Kim and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural convection heat transfer in air between two vertical plates 38 by 24 inches was investigated in this work with spacings between the plates of 0.625, 1.0 and 1.75 inches. One plate was isothermal and the other adiabatic. To measure the point velocities in the air layer a very thin quartz fiber 0.0005 in. in diameter was used. An iron- constantan thermocouple 0.001 in. in diameter was used for local temperature measurement. Velocity and temperature profiles were obtained at several positions along the plate for each spacing between the plates. An equation in the form Nu[subscript x] = 0. 348 (Gr[subscript x] (x/W))0[superscript .]241 best describes the local heat transfer characteristics for this study.
