Book Experimental Study of Two Phase Flow in a Liquid Cross Flow and an Effervescent Atomizer

Download or read book Experimental Study of Two Phase Flow in a Liquid Cross Flow and an Effervescent Atomizer written by Mona Hassanzadeh Jobehdar and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effervescent atomization uses the internal gas-liquid mixture to produce spray. The behavior of two-phase flow inside the atomizer influences the spray characteristics and is dependent on the atomizer internal geometry and operating conditions. The present study is conducted in two parts; study of the bubble formation from a novel submerged nozzle in a liquid cross-flow and investigation of the internal and external two-phase flows in an effervescent atomizer. The present study investigated the performance of a novel nozzle developed by Gadallah and Siddiqui (2013) in the liquid cross-flow. The impact of the nozzle shape, its configurations and orientations was experimentally investigated. The results showed that the novel nozzle generates smaller bubbles at higher detachment frequency for all cases compared to the standard nozzle. It is found that the elastic rebound of the bubble from a side hole plays a key role in the early bubble detachment. For the effervescent atomizer study, the impact of atomizer's internal geometry on the internal flow and spray droplet characteristics were studied. The results demonstrated that a conical base aerator tube and shorter mixing zone length provide more uniform bubbles in smaller size. A new type of bubble breaker was designed and tested in an effervescent atomizer. The results show that both internal and external two-phase flows in the atomizer were strongly influenced by bubble breaker configurations (diameter and number of holes). It was found that the liquid shear stress is the dominant force causing the bubble elongation and its eventual breakup.

Book Experimental Study of the Atomization Process for Viscous Liquids by Meniscus Perturbation and Micro Air Jet

Download or read book Experimental Study of the Atomization Process for Viscous Liquids by Meniscus Perturbation and Micro Air Jet written by Heejin Lee and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was performed to understand the atomization process in the specialized printing method which consists of the high frequency oscillating motion of a needle and a micro air jet. Highly viscous liquids, such as glycerin and acrylic paint were successfully printed with this printing method within the line width of 1 mm. High-speed imaging technique was used to observe the evolution and mechanical perturbation of a liquid meniscus which is coated on the oscillating needle. Various parameters which affect print patterns were identified to understand and control the atomization process occurring at the oscillating needle. For time-controlled atomization or printing, a pulse air jet system was implemented to print liquids only when it is demanded, and it was shown that the period of atomization can be controlled by the air jet on-and-off. The inertial coating process was studied to explain the dynamic meniscus profile, compared with static meniscus. Kinematic analysis of the needle motion was performed, which shows that the needle motion is a sinusoidal one undergoing inertial coating. Liquid sheet breakup mechanism in the presence of the air stream was also studied in conjunction with the principle of the air- blast atomizer. Performing as a printing device or a droplet generator, the reciprocating needle printing method studied here can be applied to printing or coating processes which utilize high viscosity media.

Book Experimental Study of the Spray Characteristics of a Research Airblast Atomizer

Download or read book Experimental Study of the Spray Characteristics of a Research Airblast Atomizer written by Waldo A. Acosta and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of airblast atomization was conducted using an especially designed atomizer in which the liquid first impinges on a splash plate, then is directed radially outward and is atomized by the air passing through two concentric, vaned swirlers that swirl the air in opposite directions. The effect of flow condition, air mass velocity (mass flow rate per unit area, rho sub A U sub A and liquid to air ratio on the mean drop size was studied. Seven different ethanol solutions were used to simulate changes in fuel physical properties. The range of atomizing air velocities was from 30 to 80 m/s. The mean drop diameter was measured at ambient temperature (295 K) and atmospheric pressure.

Book Numerical Simulation of Two phase Flow in an Effervescent Atomizer for Nano suspension Spray

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Two phase Flow in an Effervescent Atomizer for Nano suspension Spray written by Sanaz Arabzadeh Esfarjani and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid atomization is widely used in industrial applications such as aerospace, combustion, pharmaceutical, spray coatings, and surface engineering. The main concern of atomization is to have a controllable and uniform spray. In suspension plasma spraying technique, where the attempt is to reach nano-scaled uniform coatings, there is a vital demand to produce a uniform and non-pulsating spray. Effervescent atomizers, in which a gas is bubbled into the bulk liquid through an aerator, have shown to be a technological alternative to the conventional atomizers when atomization of liquids with large variety of viscosity and density is required. Thus, understanding the behavior of gas and liquid flow through the nozzle is crucial to predict the condition of outcoming spray. The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the two-phase flow inside the effervescent atomizers. Using the incompressible Eulerian/Eulerian approach, the three-dimensional structure of two-phase flow inside an aerated-liquid injector is modeled. The behavior of liquid film in the discharge passage is investigated using different Gas to Liquid mass flow Ratios (GLR). These numerical results are compared with the experimental data available in literature. The effect of nano-sized solid particles concentration on the liquid film thickness at the exit of the atomizer is studied through the change in liquid bulk density and viscosity.

Book Effervescent Atomization of Suspensions in a Gaseous Cross Flow

Download or read book Effervescent Atomization of Suspensions in a Gaseous Cross Flow written by Amr Abdelaziz Mostafa Saleh and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomization of liquids (pure liquids and suspensions) plays an important role in numerous industrial fields and applications. One of the main important applications is in thermal spraying processes which is the primary motivation for this study. The main trend in thermal spray processes is to coat with sub-micron and nano sized particles due to the superior performance of fine microstructured coatings. Recently, thermal spraying processes are using the suspension spraying technique. The breakup of a suspension in the atomization process differs from that of a pure liquid by the influence of the suspended particles on the fragmentation kinetics. In suspension spraying process, different types of atomizers are used but clogging problems can occur due to the suspension properties. Effervescent atomizers have shown to be a good alternative to the conventional atomizers to solve clogging issue when liquids with large variety of viscosity and density such as suspensions are atomized. In this study, effervescent atomization of suspensions in a crossflow of air is investigated experimentally. The tests have been performed at different liquid-to-gas momentum flux ratios (q) and different gas to liquid ratios (GLR). Hydrophilic and hydrophobic particles are used in the experiments. Shadowgraphy and image processing have been used in order to capture the penetration height of the spray. New correlations have been developed to predict the spray penetration height of suspensions in case the non-aerated liquid jet (GLR= 0) and for the aerated liquid jet (GLR ≠ 0).Moreover, suspensions properties such as viscosity and surface tension have a crucial effect on the atomization process. Because the atomization process and droplet formation occur in a very short timescale of the order of milliseconds, it is necessary to analyze the rapid change of the affecting suspension properties related to this timescale especially surface tension. Therefore, the time changing (dynamic) surface tension is more appropriate to be analyzed than static surface tension. In this work, the dynamic surface tension of suspensions is investigated using a combined analytical and experimental approach based on the physics governing the oscillation of elliptical jets. The dynamic surface tension of suspensions liquids in the timescale of milliseconds is calculated. The effect of the dynamic surface tension of suspension on its atomization process has been analyzed.
