Book Experimental Investigation of the Turbulence Production Mechanism in Boundary Layers

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Turbulence Production Mechanism in Boundary Layers written by R. E. Falco and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past year we have discovered the mechanism of production of the long streaks and a mechanism for creation of vortex ring-like typical eddies, and have demonstrated the occurrence of both within a real turbulent boundary layer. These aspects were the missing links needed to complete the conceptual structural model. This model de-emphasizes the importance of hairpin vortices in wall layer transport. However, experimental determination of the relative importance of each of the elements of the model in low Reynolds number layers is far from complete, and we know very little of the Reynolds number dependence or pressure gradient dependence of the model. What we have learned so far suggests several critical parameters that can be manipulated to control the production of turbulence and hence reduce drag. In the proposed research we want to focus on acquiring additional data to support the rational theory that has been formed so as to provide the basis for determining how much leverage we have in our efforts to control boundary layer turbulence.

Book Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Boundary Layer with Uniform Blowing at Moderate and High Reynolds Numbers

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Boundary Layer with Uniform Blowing at Moderate and High Reynolds Numbers written by Gazi Hasanuzzaman and published by Cuvillier. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Flow control experiments have been widely investigated since 1930's. Several flow control technique has been explored and have shown potential benefit. But the choice of control technique depends largely on the boundary condition and the type of application. Hence, friction drag of subsonic transport aircraft is intended to be reduced within the scope of this Ph. D. topic. Therefore, application of active control method such as microblowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated. A series of experiments have been performed in two different wind tunnel facilities. Wind tunnel from Department of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (LAS) was used for the measurements for moderate Reynolds number range in co-operation with the wind tunnel from Laboratoire de M ́ecanique de Feiret Lille for large Reynolds number range. Measurements are conducted with the help of state-of-the-art techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and electronic pressure sensors.

Book Comparative Study of Coherent Vortex Structures in a Boundary Layer with Adverse Pressure Gradient by Means of a New Experimental Method

Download or read book Comparative Study of Coherent Vortex Structures in a Boundary Layer with Adverse Pressure Gradient by Means of a New Experimental Method written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several kinds of coherent structures found in previous investigations in a transitional Blasius boundary layer. Spikes, A-vortices, 3D high-shear layers, and ring-like vortices are among them. These structures were observed in experimental and numerical (DNS) investigations. Very similar flow pattens were also found in other transitional near-wall shear flows, such as the plane channel flow and the pipe flow, and also in the developed wall turbulence. Based on these observations, it was suggested that these structures are very universal and represent an inherent feature of the process of turbulence production in all near-wall flows in both transitional and turbulent regimes. Moreover, the mechanism of formation and interaction of these structures can be regarded as a universal mechanism of turbulence production. The main goal of the present study is to check this idea for the case of the APG boundary-layer transition, whose late stages have never been studied experimental despite the great practical importance of this case. The only currently available study was performed numerically for a rather large APG (which is difficult to examine in the wind tunnel).

Book The Behavior of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Adverse Pressure Gradients

Download or read book The Behavior of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Adverse Pressure Gradients written by Hal L. Moses and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of predicting the behavior of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer in an adverse pressure gradient is re-examined. An outline of the problem is given along with a brief summary of the work that has already been done, including both experimental investigation are presented for a separating turbulent boundary layer with various pressure distributions. An approximate theory is developed in which the momentum integral equation is satisfied for each half of the boundary layer. The velocity profiles used in the analysis consist of the well known wall and wake regions, resulting in a two-parameter family with the Reynolds number as one parameter. It is assumed, with some experimental justification, that the eddy viscosity can be reasonably approximated from zero pressure gradient experimets. The numerical calculations, using the Runge-Kutta procedure, show good agreement with the experiments. The reliability that can be expected of such approximate methods is discussed. (Author).
