Book An Experimental Investigation of the Thermomechanics of Pipe Flow of Magnetic Fluids in Response to Heating and Applied Magnetic Fields

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Thermomechanics of Pipe Flow of Magnetic Fluids in Response to Heating and Applied Magnetic Fields written by Hooshyar M. Hamedani and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the thermodynamics and fluid mechanics of the pipe flow of magnetic fluids. A water-based magnetic fluid was synthesized in the laboratory and its relative viscosity and magnetic properties were determined as a function of temperature. A "thermomagnetic pump" was built and tested in which temperature differences caused the magnetic fluid to circulate through a loop when subjected to a magnetic field. In a conceptual study, the pumping capabilities of such a flow circulation were considered for a thermal rejection system application. Pumping capabilities were observed to be directly related to the slope of the pyromagnetic curve. The sensitivity of the fluid was enhanced by the addition of zinc, manganese, and cobalt compounds. Fluid properties and flow parameters, including viscosity, magnetization, velocity, pressure, and temperature, were determined. A theoretical analysis was conducted for the prediction of values and analysis of the nature of the magnetic body forces induced in a magnetic fluid in the presence of heat and magnetic fields. A technique is introduced for the prediction of the maximum pressure difference that a "thermomagnetic pump" could produce. The advantages of a thermomagnetic pump are that it is noise free and reliable due to the absence of moving parts and control devices. At present, however, the flow rates generated by such a system are small and much research and development is needed for practical applications.

Book The Experimental Investigation of the Influence of a Longitudinal Magnetic Field on Convection Heat Transfer During Turbulent Flow of a Conducting Fluid in a Pipe

S. Kovner and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of a longitudinal magnetic field on convection heat transfer during turbulent flow of a conducting liquid in a pipe is studied, and an empirical formula for calculation of the heat transfer is subsequently offered. In general, at a constant Hartman number, the influence of the magnetic field decreases as the Reynolds and Peclet numbers increase. (Author).

Book Coupled Momentum and Heat Transport in Laminar Axisymmetric Pipe Flow of Ferrofluids in Non uniform Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Coupled Momentum and Heat Transport in Laminar Axisymmetric Pipe Flow of Ferrofluids in Non uniform Magnetic Fields written by Carlos Francisco Cruz-Fierro and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of a non-uniform magnetic field on the coupled transport of momentum and heat is studied for the case of laminar pipe flow of a magnetically susceptible ferrofluid. The momentum and heat transport equations are complemented with the necessary electromagnetic terms and used to develop a computer simulation of the velocity profile and temperature distribution in the fluid. Two magnetic field configurations are studied. The first configuration is produced by a single short solenoid, located around the pipe. The magnetic field produced has both radial and axial components. For the second configuration, the electric current is inverted in one half of the solenoid, creating much stronger field gradients in both directions. The flow is laminar, driven by a constant pressure difference between the ends of the pipe. The apparent viscosity of the ferrofluid is modeled as dependent on temperature and magnetic field. In simulations involving heat transfer, a section of the pipe is maintained at higher constant temperature. The rest of the wall is adiabatic. A Visual-Basic code, FiRMa (Flow in Response to Magnetic field), was developed to perform the numerical simulations. For the water-based ferrofluid, results show reduction of average velocity and small deviations from the parabolic velocity profile as the result of vortex viscosity. Heat transfer calculations show a decrease in the heat transfer coefficient and an increase in the fluid exit temperature. These effects are due to the change in flow pattern and average velocity. Current research aims for the development of a stable liquid-metal based ferrofluid, because of the high electric and thermal conductivities. The FiRMa code is used to examine the expected response of a mercury-based ferrofluid to the magnetic fields under study. Results show that the electromagnetic effects on the liquid metal-based ferrofluid are much stronger, due to induced electric currents and the Lorentz force acting on them.

Book Heat Transfer in Magnetic Fluids at Low Reynolds Number

Download or read book Heat Transfer in Magnetic Fluids at Low Reynolds Number written by Sang Hyouk Choi and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was concerned with the flow of a magnetic self-propelled ferrohydrodynamic fluid in a horizontal circular tube subjected to axially varying temperature and magnetic field. The first phase of the study involved the analytical solution to the governing equations for the velocity and temperature profiles within the fully developed flow region of the duct when subjected to linearly varying axial temperature and magnetic field. The results showed the problem to be similar to gravity-induced natural convection flows even though the variables are different. The Nusselt number was found to be a function of a magnetic Rayleigh number. The second part of the study consisted of an experimental investigation at the thermal entry region of flow caused by a change in tube wall heat flux and a numerical solution to the governing equations for the same problem. Because of the low pyromagnetic coefficient of the water-based Lignosite fluid used in the study, only low Reynolds number flows were obtained. It was found that a hot-wire anemometer could be used for velocity measurements if the overheat ratio was maintained at a low value and measurements were made within a region of constant magnetic field strength. The experimentally and numerically obtained velocity and temperature profiles generally agreed in magnitude and shape but a shift in maximum velocity point location was observed. This shift was attributed to experimental errors and to physical properties of the magnetic fluid that were approximated due to lack of information.
