Book Cyclic Response of Axially Loaded Tapered Piles

Download or read book Cyclic Response of Axially Loaded Tapered Piles written by MH. El Naggar and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapered piles have a substantial advantage over straight-sided wall piles with regard to their load-carrying capacity in the downward frictional mode; however, their behavior under cyclic axial loading has not been investigated. In this study, the characteristics of the cyclic response of tapered piles were established from experimental investigation. A large laboratory facility for testing model piles was developed. In this facility, the soil was contained in a steel chamber and pressurized using an air bladder to model the confining pressure. Three instrumented steel model piles with different degrees of taper were installed in loose sand and subjected to two-way cyclic axial load tests. The results of this study indicated that the pile stiffness under cyclic loading increased with an increase in the confining pressure for all piles examined in this study. Moreover, the pile stiffness increased through cyclic loading due to the densification of the sand surrounding the pile. The amplitude of the cyclic load had a significant effect on the performance of the piles. As a result, it is recommended that the amplitude of the cyclic load be limited to 25% of the static axial capacity and 75% of the static uplift capacity to ensure satisfactory performance of tapered piles. This requirement is readily satisfied in the design of most piles. In this case, the performance of tapered piles under cyclic axial load was found to be superior to that of straight-sided wall piles.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Combined Load Response of Model Piles Driven in Sand

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Combined Load Response of Model Piles Driven in Sand written by Jintae Lee and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the load applied on a pile is usually a combination of a vertical and a lateral load, there have been few studies done on the response of piles subjected to combined loading; these studies; in addition, produce results that are inconsistent with respect to the effects of axial loads on the lateral load response of piles. In this paper, we present the results of model pile load tests performed to assess the influence of axial loads on the lateral response of piles driven in sand. Using a drop hammer, an instrumented circular model pile was driven into large-scale sand samples prepared in a cylindrical steel tank with various densities using a pluviation method. Lateral load tests were performed on the model pile subjected to different axial loads. The combined load test results showed that the presence of an axial load on a driven pile is detrimental to its lateral capacity, for the lateral deflection of the model pile head increased with increasing axial load. The bending moments at the pile head increased substantially (by 10 %, 36 % and 39 % for loose, medium dense and dense sand, respectively) in the presence of axial loads.

Book Experimental Investigation of CFFP Soil Interaction in Sand Under Cyclic Lateral Loading

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of CFFP Soil Interaction in Sand Under Cyclic Lateral Loading written by Wei Qin and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted on the response of concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer piles (CFFPs) in dry sand subjected to lateral cyclic loading. Two types of instrumented model pile tests were conducted. Fifteen tests were conducted with typical load magnitudes and numbers of cycles, and one test was conducted under static loading. The series of tests provided continuous measurements of the bearing characteristics of the model piles and of the responses of the piles and soil because of differences in the pile sizes, cycle frequencies, and numbers of cycles. Significant softening or degradation of the soil near the tested piles was found under large lateral cyclic loads. The rate effect was also determined by changing the cycle frequency. The behavior of the softening and the rate effect were determined by varying the number of cycles and the magnitude of the loads. The tests demonstrate that the maximal bending moment and soil resistance of CFFPs degrade by approximately 15 % and 25 %, respectively, from 50 to 700 cycles at the ultimate loading level. These tests confirm that the maximal bending moment was 35 % to 50 % greater under dynamic loading than under static loading, and the soil degradation was remarkable. The relatively short CFFPs more easily reached the ultimate state than the long CFFPs. The results were used to fit the modulus of subgrade reaction (k), and a new formula to predict k is proposed, which shows good precision.

Book Grain scale Investigation of Sand pile Interface Under Axial Loading Conditions Using X ray Tomography

Download or read book Grain scale Investigation of Sand pile Interface Under Axial Loading Conditions Using X ray Tomography written by Jeanne Doreau Malioche and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This doctoral work presents an experimental investigation into the mechanisms governing the macroscopic response of sand-pile interface during monotonic installation and subsequent axial cyclic loading. An innovative approach combining x-ray tomography and advanced image analysis tools is employed to extract information at different scales, including the micro-scale. A quantitative analysis of the behavior of individual sand grains in the vicinity of the pile offers valuable three-dimensional (3D) data set against which theoretical or numerical approaches could be tested.A series of tests is run on an instrumented close-ended conical model pile installed by monotonic jacking in a dense calcareous sand sample. Following the installation, the model pile is submitted to a large number of axial displacement-controlled loading cycles (a few thousands cycles) under constant normal stress. The tests are performed in a mini-calibration chamber that allows the acquisition of high resolution x-ray images at different stages of the loading. The chamber is admittedly not representative of field pile testing conditions for the main following reasons: the calibration chamber-to-pile diameter ratio and the sand particle-to-pile diameter ratio are far below the ratios recommended in the literature to limit scale effects on the interface response. Consequently, the results presented in this work can not, and should not, be directly extrapolated to field pile design. Yet, such a setup is able to reproduce qualitatively trends that are similar to those obtained at the macro-scale on large-scale experiments and allows the observation of full-field mechanisms taking place at the micro-scale.3D images resulting from the reconstruction of the x-ray scans are used to identify and follow the evolution of individual sand grains. Full-kinematics are measured thanks to a 3D Digital image Correlation (DIC) code, “TomoWarp2”. Image processing tools are also employed to measure local porosity changes and the production of fines by grain crushing at the interface.During pile installation, different zones where grains displacements concentrate are identified. A recirculation of the grains alongside the pile is also observed. Globally, the sand mass exhibits a dilative behavior except within a relatively thin layer (about 3 to 4·D50 thickness) around the model pile where grain crushing occurs. During subsequent loading cycles, the macroscopic response of sand-pile interface shows a two-phases evolution, with a non negligible increase of shaft resistance in the latter phase. For these two phases, the measurement of grain kinematics reveals a different behavior of the sand mass associated with a significant densification at the interface. In the first phase, the sand mass contracts radially within a region of thickness 4·D50. This mechanism is likely due to inter-granular rearrangement as measure by DIC. In the second phase, sand grains hardly move and the sand mass reaches a threshold density for which the friction on the shaft starts to increase substantially.

Book A Comprehensive Database of Tests on Axially Loaded Piles Driven in Sand

Download or read book A Comprehensive Database of Tests on Axially Loaded Piles Driven in Sand written by Zhongxuan Yang and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comprehensive Database of Tests on Axially Loaded Driven Piles in Sands reviews the critical need to develop better load-test databases for piles driven in sands. The key quality parameters, population of current entries and reporting formats are described before offering preliminary results obtained from comparisons between axial capacities calculated by various predictive approaches and site measurements. This book also shows that the "simplified" and "offshore" ICP and UWA variants proposed by some practitioners are over-conservative and that their use could be discontinued. The new pile capacity and stiffness database offers a broad scope for evaluating potential prediction biases relating to a wide range of soil and pile parameters. Submission of further high quality tests for inclusion in regularly updated versions is encouraged. Presents a comprehensive and updated database for piles driven in predominantly silica sands Features reviews of the design procedures for driven piles in sand Assesses the performance of various mainstreams design procedures applied for driven piles in sand Provides comprehensive information of case histories of pile load tests

Book Design of Piles Under Cyclic Loading

Download or read book Design of Piles Under Cyclic Loading written by Alain Puech and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in the fields of energy, transport and industrial engineering have led to the emergence of new types of structures and infrastructures subject to variable stresses, for which the usual methods for designing pile foundations are now inadequate. The recommendations presented in this book will help to partly fill this technical gap by proposing a methodological approach and calculation methods to take account of the effects of cyclic loads in the design of foundations on piles. These are based on both laboratory and full scale experiments, and on modeling carried out within the framework of the national SOLCYP project.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Physical modelling has entered a new era with the advent of exciting work on real time interfaces between physical and numerical modelling and the growth of facilities and expertise that enable development of so called ‘megafuges’ of 1000gtonne capacity or more; capable of modelling the largest and most complex of geotechnical challenges. Physical Modelling in Geotechnics will be of interest to professionals, engineers and academics interested or involved in geotechnics, geotechnical engineering and related areas. The 9th International Conference on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics was organised by the Multi Scale Geotechnical Engineering Research Centre at City, University of London under the auspices of Technical Committee 104 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). City, University of London, are pleased to host the prestigious international conference for the first time having initiated and hosted the first regional conference, Eurofuge, ten years ago in 2008. Quadrennial regional conferences in both Europe and Asia are now well established events giving doctoral researchers, in particular, the opportunity to attend an international conference in this rapidly evolving specialist area. This is volume 2 of a 2-volume set.

Book Experimental Response of a Pile in Sand Under Static and Cyclic Lateral Loads

Download or read book Experimental Response of a Pile in Sand Under Static and Cyclic Lateral Loads written by Pegah Oghabi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piles are engineering structures which are subjected to axial and lateral loading. In this dissertation, pile load tests were performed on a full-scale fabricated pile to understand lateral pile responses under static and cyclic loading. The experiments were performed on a fabricated test pile at the Geo-Engineering Laboratory at Queen's University. Dry loose Olimag Synthetic Olivine sand was used as the test soil. Instrumentation including axial strain gauges, null sensors (earth pressure sensors) and string potentiometers were used to monitor pile responses throughout the tests. What differentiates the current study from previous investigations is direct measurements of lateral earth pressure on a test pile using those null sensors with conventional measurements of curvature and deformation. The null sensors of Talesnick (2005) have 'infinite stiffness' and calibration that is almost independent of the soil type, soil condition and stress history, qualities that make the sensor superior to other commercially available sensors. The initial pile response under static loading was examined. Previous laterally loaded pile test programs have utilized curvature measurements to infer moments, and differentiation of moments to determine lateral forces. Comparisons with the directly measured pressures confirmed the effectiveness of differentiated moments. To understand offshore structures, the behaviour of a pile subjected to cyclic loading is examined and explained by elastic soil response at low load levels and the progressive development of inelastic response at higher load levels. In addition, the loading condition (i.e. two-way versus one-way loading) was found to have a substantial effect on pile responses. The pressure distributions for two-way cyclic loading suggest that the lateral pressure is proportional to displacement with peak pressures near the ground surface during elastic responses. The peak lateral pressures move deeper towards the point of rotation with increasing cyclic loads to generate inelastic responses. However, the lateral pressure response is consistently inelastic for one-way loading.

Book Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics

Download or read book Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics written by Dong-Sheng Jeng and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rapid developments being made in the exploration of marine resources, coastal geohazard and offshore geotechnics have attracted a great deal of attention from coastal geotechnical engineers, with significant progress being made in recent years. Due to the complicated nature of marine environmnets, there are numerous natural marine geohazard preset throughout the world’s marine areas, e.g., the South China Sea. In addition, damage to offshore infrastructure (e.g., monopiles, bridge piers, etc.) and their supporting installations (pipelines, power transmission cables, etc.) has occurred in the last decades. A better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and soil behavior of the seabed in marine environments will help engineers in the design and planning processes of coastal geotechnical engineering projects. The purpose of this book is to present the recent advances made in the field of coastal geohazards and offshore geotechnics. The book will provide researchers with information reagrding the recent developments in the field, and possible future developments. The book is composed of eighteen papers, covering three main themes: (1) the mechanisms of fluid–seabed interactions and the instability associated with seabeds when they are under dynamic loading (papers 1–5); (2) evaluation of the stability of marine infrastructure, including pipelines (papers 6–8), piled foundation and bridge piers (papers 9–12), submarine tunnels (paper 13), and other supported foundations (paper 14); and (3) coastal geohazards, including submarine landslides and slope stability (papers 15–16) and other geohazard issues (papers 17–18). The editors hope that this book will functoin as a guide for researchers, scientists, and scholars, as well as practitioners of coastal and offshore engineering.
