Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The Feingold K-P (additive free) diet was not effective in reducing hyperactivity in preschool and elementary school boys from 46 families, although younger children responded more favorably than older boys. Favorable diet effects were most frequently reported in subjective parent ratings, much less so in teacher ratings, and not at all in objective data from neuropsychological tests and classroom and laboratory observations. Positive effects in school-age children were observed only when a control diet was given first, suggesting a diet order effect. Dietary manipulation to achieve behavioral changes was not as successful as had been previously described. These findings do not establish a causative role for artificial food colors and flavors on hyperactivity in children. Study methodology, demographic information, nutrient analyses of the diets, and behavioral criteria (physical-neurological exam, observation, reaction time, performance testing, ratings and neuropsychological tests) are described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All forms of life require food materials in certain minimum amounts to insure an active life and successful reproduction. Nutrition is concerned with what these materials are, how they function, what effects they have when absent and what happens to them when ingested. During the past two centuries such nutritional disorders as scurvy, beriberi, rickets and pellagra have been discovered, successfully treated and eradicated by physicians in developed countries. In this century, such noted researchers as Rose, Meyerhof and Krebs have contributed enormously to the field of nutrition. Currently, research is evolving new concepts and facts so rapidly that the average practitioner can hardly keep current, even in his own field of medicine. Bona fide research by universities and governmental agen cies has produced voluminous information, much of which seems contra dictory and therefore tends to confuse the general public, particularly in the area of potential carcinogens. This confusion has prompted consumer groups, politicians, and social welfarists to bring pressures and demands on medical schools and prac titioners of medicine to increase their knowledge and concern in the field of nutrition. Taking advantage of and adding to this confusion are the health food faddists and cultists, some only for monetary gain and others with a real religious zeal.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A critical review of research in the area of hyperkinesis and food additives analyzes the design and findings of experimental and clinical studies of the hypothesized relationship between hyperkinesis and diet, proposed by Feingold in 1973. A preliminary paper concluded that scientific evidence was not available to support Feingold's claim that food additives cause hyperactivity and learning disability in many children. New data has involved 7 double-blind controlled clinical trials in which children were challenged with food additives or placebo; 2 other studies tested the total Feingold (additive-free) diet against a control diet. The problems related to research design, the results of these studies, and in vitro and animal investigations are described. No behavioral changes resembling the dramatic improvements reported anecdotally by Feingold and others were observed; nor were there episodes of behavioral deterioration in children challenged with artificial food colors. No changes in public food policy concerning the use of artificial colors by the food industry are recommended.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present an account of several different studies of the relationship of food additives to child behavior and learn ing problems. Because the outcome of these studies has deep, personal interest for many parents and their children, I have tried to present the studies in such a way that the logic and evidence of the studies is com prehensible to informed adults interested in weighing the facts for themselves. Unfortunately, the facts do not always follow a straightfor ward course. Part of my purpose has been to show the complexities lying in the way of the answers to apparently simple questions. I believe it is healthy and important for parents to examine the scientific evidence on issues affecting their daily lives, and to become aware of the process of research surrounding controversial claims regarding new therapies. New ideas in behavioral science are often difficult to track down and evaluate, and consequently there may be a large gap between therapeu tic claims and evidence bearing on those claims. The mother who won ders whether her child should be treated with a special diet is unlikely to have the facts necessary to make a judgment of the costs and benefits. She should however, know some of the major pitfalls in coming to a conclusion for or against such a course.

Download or read book The Clinical Evaluation of a Food Additive written by Christian Tschanz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-06-25 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This useful book reviews and analyzes the rigorous scientific, regulatory, and clinical testing and evaluation applied to the widely used food additive aspartame. In one compact volume you gain access to extensive information illustrating the increased recognition by regulatory agencies of the usefulness of human studies in evaluating new food additives. The Clinical Evaluation of a Food Additive: Assessment of Aspartame begins by describing the nuts and bolts of food additive safety evaluation in humans, including an insightful historical perspective of the development of good clinical practice guidelines. It provides the regulatory requirements for human research, as well as key elements for the design and conduct of human studies. The scientific and regulatory considerations of food additive safety are explored, including interesting descriptions of aspartame's key animal safety studies. In addition, the book reviews the medical postmarketing surveillance system developed for identifying and evaluating reports of aspartame's alleged adverse health effects. Through meticulous research and systematic clarity, The Clinical Evaluation of a Food Additive: Assessment of Aspartame provides work-saving, state-of-the-art examples to guide future testing and evaluation of tomorrow's food additives.
Download or read book Nutrition Behavior written by Barbara Hindman and published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. This book was released on 1981 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A 1980 workshop on nutrition and behavior promoted the exchange of ideas among people from diverse disciplines: toxicology, neurology, epidemiology, pharmacology, psychiatry, behavioral science, and nutrition science. Several broad themes emerged: the need to identify research areas and set priorities; to develop prediction methods and models; to recognize the effects of modern life, (i.e., alcohol and drug abuse, overnutrition, and smoking) on nutrition; to resolve the conflicts of research and regulation; and finally, to examine fully the relationship between nutritional adequacy and central nervous system development and function. The social influences on nutrition were examined in Session I. Regulatory mechanisms, such as neurotransmission and inborn errors of metabolism, were discussed in Session II. Effects of various dietary constituents, including chemicals, artificial colors, caffeine, and monosodium glutamate, were discussed in detail. Diet therapy for disease and disability, and experimental test design and test methodologies were also discussed. (cj).
