Book excerpt: If we are asked what is the single most influential work in Chinese history, the answer will definitely be Lunyu, the Analects . Its influence on the Chinese is comparable to that of the Bible on the Western world. Yet contemporary scholarship tends to trivialize or impoverish Confucius's teaching by denying either the general integrity of his work or the transcendental or religious dimension of his thought. This thesis argues that the Analects should be treated as a generally integrated whole, reflecting the vision of Confucius. An existential reading of the Analects, as this author proposes to do here, has revealed that this foundational text has three organically connected levels of thought, proceeding from self-cultivation, through the mediation of the social to the metaphysical level of Ultimate Reality. These three levels of thought correspond well to the structure and reality of human existence as Paul Tillich interprets them. On the metaphysical level, Dao, the Way, de, virtue, shen, the spirit and ming, destiny are discussed, which proves that Confucius indeed had transcendental concerns. On the social level, three key concepts are emphasized: ren, benevolence, yi, moral rightness, and li, the rites. These three concepts form a hierarchy with ren at the top, yi in the middle and li at the bottom. It is to this social level that Confucius seemed to direct most of his attention. Finally, on the personal level, the concept of ji, self is discussed. In Confucius's conception, the self has physical, psychological and sociological aspects, which have both positive and negative tendencies. Self-cultivation is an effort to overcome negative tendencies inherent in these structures as well as to develop positive attributes such as xue, learning, zhi, wisdom, and yong, courage. I conclude this thesis by stating that because the Analects answers existential needs and offers a practical way to harmonize the individual, society and cosmos, its appeal in the Chinese world will continue and its appeal to non-Chinese will grow.

The Analects, also known as the Analects of Confucius, is the collection of sayings and ideas attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and his contemporaries, traditionally believed to have been written by Confucius' followers. It is believed to have been written during the Warring States period (475 BC–221 BC), and it achieved its final form during the mid-Han dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). By the early Han dynasty the Analects was considered merely a "commentary" on the Five Classics, but the status of the Analects grew to be one of the central texts of Confucianism by the end of that dynasty. During the late Song dynasty (960-1279) the importance of the Analects as a philosophy work was raised above that of the older Five Classics, and it was recognized as one of the "Four Books". The Analects has been one of the most widely read and studied books in China for the last 2,000 years, and continues to have a substantial influence on Chinese and East Asian thought and values today. If there is one single book that can be upheld as the common code of a whole people, it is perhaps Lun Yu, or The Analects. Surely, few individuals in history have shaped their country's civilization more profoundly than Master Kong. The great Han historiographer, Si-ma Qian, writing 2,100 years ago said, "He may be called the wisest indeed!" Elias Canetti summed it up neatly: "The Analects of Confucius are the oldest complete intellectual and spiritual portrait of a man. It strikes one as a modern book." It also strikes this reader as a very un-western book and difficult to decipher. In spite of that there is a lot that Confucius' thought has in common with the wisdom of the west. One of the most famous doctrines is that of "reciprocity." 15.24 Zigong asked: "Is there any single word that could guide one's entire life?" The Master said: "Should it not be reciprocity? What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others." (Simon Leys trans., p 77) That is complementary to the more familiar "Golden Rule" that says one should "do unto others as one would have them do unto you." From reading the aphorisms one comes away with an appreciation for culture, family and what seems to be a conservative view of man. It also is a very humane, even humanistic, view of society. Apparently this was just what was needed during the lifetime of Confucius as there was great change in his society. He lived during a period of acute cultural crisis. Confucius, like thinkers in the West from Socrates to Gandhi, demonstrated a confidence that in turn drew followers to him and his thought. We can thank them for what little of Confucius' thought that we have. In these books and fragments we have the distillation of his thought and it impresses me as worth meditating on. It is a treasure of humanity." How it came to be transformed by Zhu Xi (1130–1200) into one of the most philosophically significant texts in the Confucian tradition is the subject of this book. Scholarly attention in China had long been devoted to the Analects. By the time of Zhu Xi, a rich history of commentary had grown up around it. But Zhu, claiming that the Analects was one of the authoritative texts in the canon and should be read before all others, gave it a still more privileged status in the tradition. He spent decades preparing an extended interlinear commentary on it. Sustained by a newer, more elaborate language of metaphysics, Zhu's commentary on the Analects marked a significant shift in the philosophical orientation of Confucianism—a shift that redefined the Confucian tradition for the next eight centuries, not only in China, but in Japan and Korea well. Gardner's translations and analysis of Zhu Xi's commentary on the Analects show one of China's great thinkers in an interesting and complex act of philosophical negotiation. Through an interlinear, line-by-line "dialogue" with Confucius, Zhu effected a reconciliation of the teachings of the Master, commentary by later exegetes, and contemporary philosophical concerns of Song-dynasty scholars. By comparing Zhu's reading of the Analects with the earlier standard reading by He Yan (190–249), Gardner illuminates what is dramatically new in Zhu Xi's interpretation of the Analects. A pioneering study of Zhu Xi's reading of the Analects, this book demonstrates how commentary is both informed by a text and informs future readings, and highlights the importance of interlinear commentary as a genre in Chinese philosophy.
